Tuesday morning 11/6/12 was a frosty one. I actually forgot to set my alarm the night before and my wife wakes me up at 5:30 am. CRAP! OVERSLEPT! I take a quick shower, run out there and get settled in by 6:20. By 7:30 I hear something walking behind me. I take a look over my shoulder and see this massive buck walking downwind of me 25 yards! I didnt have my bow in my hand yet so all I could do was watch him. He walked in and hit the scent cone of the estrous and locked up. Standing there for an eternity licking his lips and sniffing, he started walking away. I let out a doe bleat, nothing. I grunted and he turned and looked but kept walking away. Then I snort wheezed at him and he turned slightly and stood there forever. Then he did a disappearing act. I thought he was gone. I was glassing the area all over and couldnt see him. I then began to rattle and grunt aggressive. Nothing. An hour passes and I look over to where he disappeared and I watch him get up! He was laying there 50 yards the whole time! He made his way back down the same trail he came in on and i knew id have one small lane to thread the needle through. When he walked through I "mah'd" and he stopped about 23 yards away right where i needed him to. I hit him right in the shoulder with a spitfire maxx and it stuck in the offside shoulder. He ran about 80 yards and crashed. I put an arrow through this buck last season high in the shoulder and never found him. This buck was killed in Suffolk county, Long Island on private land. We rough scored him at 135 and he weighed 155 dressed. Im waiting on the age. I got it all on video. Life is good.

The story started last December when I hit this deer high in the shoulder and never recovered him. Disappointed was an understatement. Yesterday morning I was in my perch when around 7:30 am I heard leaves rustling. I look over my shoulder and see this giant buck working his way downwind of me. He passed right through my scent cone and didnt notice a thing. Once he hit my estrous scent pod he locked up on it, stood there smelling for a while, and started to walk off. He got to around 60 yards and bedded down....for an hour! He finally got up after I did a snort wheeze at him and he walked the trail he came in on. I saw a small opening in the branches and when he walked through I hit him with a "mah." He stopped and the shot was true! He ran about 80 yards out of sight and heard him crash. After I recovered the deer i noticed the scar on his shoulder and knew this was the beast that I hit the previous year. We rough scored him around 135. Got it on video with the s4 jacknife! I love this sport!!!

I killed the biggest buck of my life yesterday morning. Big beautiful 8 that we rough scored at 135. I will post pics and the story to the harvest thread.

i was out on sunday morning and passed on a small 7 pointer around 8:30 am

Stay out of the area! Dont check the cams every few days, rather every few weeks. Without a doubt in my mind you are the reason why the area dried up, not the canines

Didnt see a thing all weekend. Discouraged!

I've been told to sit tight and wait them out. Could take up to an hour for them to move on but you DO NOT want to get out of the stand when they're all around you. Great way to turn them nocturnal.

i donated one year to wildlife unlimited in oakdale. Not sure if he still does it or not.

Damn man sorry to hear. I know the feeling all too well unfortunately. I had a similar experience on a deer my bro in law shot. He shot it in the guts and we lost the blood trail after about 50 yards. We did giant circles and found the deer only another 50 yards away but we lost blood because the exit hole was clogged with his intestines. Sounds like it could be a similar situation if your finding peices of intestines on the ground. Good Luck!

A buddy of mine killed a buck over the weekend that was all rutted up. He had black hocks and stunk to high hell. He was chasing a doe around that morning and she was urinating in a scrape.
-
Opening morning I had 3 does and a small 7 pointer come in. I was trying to shoot one of the does but the buck was chasing them all around and they never offered me a shot.

Way to go guys!

For me it depends on the stand setup. I have places I wouldnt think to go to in the am (foodplots) but I also have spots that cater to both am & pm hunts like acorn ridges. I love to hunt whenever I can but the mornings have an edge for me.

I gotta say ive been pretty fortunate in that aspect. I have found that I rarely get nice bucks on my property before the season. Once the rut rolls around thats when I start getting picks of bigger deer. Go figure.
-
He aint no great hunter, he's a bum! Anyone who talks the way he does doesnt even get a second chance in my book because guys like him never change.
-
Ditto to what WNY said. I will always take a mature doe if given the shot. Fawns or no fawns.
-
Just stop with this bullshit already! Move to Illinois if your not happy you friggen baby!
-
LOTS OF DOES, FAWNS AND SMALL BUCKS USING MY 2 FOODPLOTS. NOTHING BIG SHOWING UP ON CAMS YET.
-
I wonder what he's doing?

.I used to shoot Muzzy's too until last season when I shot a deer and the blades bent over like the top of a tuna can. Didnt like that too much so I switched to Hellrazors. I liked them too but I wanted more cut so now im using the spitfire maxx. Cant wait to see what damage they do.

I've been struggling a bit with this situation myself. We just recently had a ladderstand stolen and last season our neighbor told us guys were hunting on the property but he couldnt get a license plate #. We also found evidence of someone shooting a deer on our property from the road! What did we do? We put a huge chain across the road so no one can get down to our house. If they wanted to the would have to park on the road and these guys arent ballsy enough to do that (too visible). We are also looking into a spypoint cam that will text me a pic the second it is taken so i can get on the phone with my local DEC officer and tell him to head down to my place. We've also put barbed wired running along the length of our neighbors fields in case any of these numbskulls try to jump onto our land and hunt. The real issue is the locals on the road. They still think they are entitled to go on the land because they've lived there for years. They got another thing coming...beyond sick of this!
