What's the Scariest hunting situation you have had ?
chas0218 replied to fasteddie's topic in General Hunting
I went hunting over on some state property last day of gun season. I started in the early morning with a fully charged cell phone. The cold must have killed it I thought no big deal. I figured I would just make a big circle stalking then back to the truck. I walked and walked and walked thinking to myself I should have doubled back onto my original trail but nothing so I walked some more finally came to a clearing never saw it before decided to give my phone one last try pulled up the gps and found I actually walked past the truck about .5 miles back. Long story short I was considering making a fire and staying out there for the night then making my way back later. This a huge piece of property about 2500 acres Erwin wildlife management unit. It was definitely a scary situation although I was prepared and really just needed to settle my mind down. Another one that had my heart pumping was when I fell out of my tree stand while descending the tree. I used a couple branches to brace myself before I got my hand onto a step and pop the branch breaks and I fall about 17' back first to the ground. I was very thankful I was wearing my backpack as that broke my fall with my seat cushion inside. One thing I am very careful about is clearing any and all brush from under my stands just for this reason. Nothing like getting impaled by a branch. Last one is when my wife texted me and said "I'm getting shot at" on the opener of gun season. I told her to get down and lay behind the tree she was in. I sprinting 1/2 mile in full hunting gear gun in hand across our property and up our hill by the time I got to the guy I was so full of adrenaline I don't think I was barely breathing. I verbally abused the guy and called the authorities. That was the last time I have saw him trespassing or hunting near the property line. Not sure he even hunts on the other side of the hill anymore. -
That is awesome really motivates me to get out there and start looking.

Revamped my predator setup this year
chas0218 replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
What about this? Granted not adjustable but seems like a little less cumbersome. Might not need to be adjustable as close as it gets the light to the gun. https://elusivewildlife.com/shop/hunting-lights/light-mounts/kill-light-scopemount-25mm-or-30mm-black.html -

What do each use for batteries? Are they the CR123 lithiums? Sorry forgot to mention nice setup! -
S&W out of running for new US combat handgun
chas0218 replied to nyslowhand's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I maybe wrong but is Sig owned by S&W? I thought they were but I haven't been following handguns for quite a while. Maybe affiliated with S&W I know some of the Sig mags fit S&W guns but not sure what the deal with the 2 are. -
I like the idea below better! haha but really I thinkI would do the same then blockade the stairs.

Not a bad looking cart but I would cut some large elongated wholes side to side to shed some weight from the plywood without sacrificing rigidity.

Never liked kawi anyway. My jetski made by them is complete junk. Rather by an american made Polaris. -
Yeah keep me posted. My father in law just bought a browning and likes it although they said it wasn't waterproof? How long have you been using your browning? He said the browning goes through the batteries a little faster than his other camera (can't remember the name) but still better than the WGI cameras

If they expect to come on my property they better have a warrant and the state will have a pending law suit for money spent on gas and food to supplement my family on the amount of venison we eat. What's the going rate for organic grass fed beef then times that by the hundereds of pounds of venison my family consumes yearly then the special trips into the grocery store we need to take it adds up quickly.

Yeah I'm doing the same. I would like to try bushnells and moultrie. A buddy uses moultrie and has had good luck with them. I'm slowly phasing them out as they break. I figured I would try a primos, don't really like them but mine have taken 500+ pictures and still on their same set of batteries @ 89%. So they are lasting but still a little on the blurry side. I have also heard good things about scoutguard but no one I know uses them.

That could make a lot of boots!

Been in this boat for the last 3 years, and need another 5 out of my truck until we can afford a new one. I think a vehicle lift is in my future if I'm going to keep working on my vehicles.

HAHAHA that right there is funny. Although very true. I though this thread was dead?!?

Yeah those WGI cams are old too(not most people can say that about those cameras). I think they are on their 4th season, the primos cams I got cheap and didn't really expect much from them they aren't bad but nothing to write home about.

Thought about making one out of 16' 4x4s? I saw you use a blind so you just plop your blind up top of it. The last tripod stand I saw was about $250 I think you could source the material and have $150 tops invested. I'm not sure if they have come down in price since then.

Yeah I was going to throw in a 6.0 and 4l80e tranny but they wanted 1k each so opted for the stock replacement. It had the water pump just minus the accessories. It took longer for me to pull my motor than it did to put the new one in because of all the rusted bolts. The "classic" 07 model is the same as my 03. If he has the earlier make then I'm guessing he had the same problem as me if the later NNBS (new new body style) then it will most likely be the afm motor. If he has the afm motor i would look into a lifter issue. I'm not sure which number cylinder it was but the afm cylinders were the culprit and was usually the intake valve lifter. EDIT:I did forget to mention that the compression test will come back all good even if it is a lifter issue. The issue is the lifter becomes lazy and doesn't pump up with oil pressure and the intake valve stays shut.
-
I forgot the later model 07's had the 4 cylinder deactivation this might just be a lifter issue. I know they had some issues with 07-11? not sure but if you look up lifter issues and afm you will find a plethora of info on it.

Umm been there did this. Call up A&P auto in Palmyra http://www.apautoparts.com/ .I put about $500 into the motor in just sensors, I bent a valve trying to run it like the video. I called up A&P got a used motor and haven't looked back also only cost $550 for the used motor from intake to oil pan and that was with the extended warranty ($50 extra). I think what causes this problem is an exhaust leak at the exhuast manifold then plugs the cats and causes too much backpressure and basically just ruins the motor over time. I'm glad you got almost 200k out of yours my 03 has 99k on it and replaced the motor at 81k. Here is what my 03 silverado was doing. That was also with the exhaust cut off just in front of the cats.

That is awesome, the big 8 I figure is 3.5 this year. It's always a nice feeling seeing deer you passed on make it through. Whether I get another chance at him next year or not I am looking forward to the upcoming season. I usually leave mine up through January then pull them sometime in February. I don't leave them up all winter but like to get a look at the deer that made it through the season. We have about 7 or 8 mature doe that also made it through the season so next year should have a pretty good crop of deer. I have had cameras stolen but in areas I second guess myself they get hung up high. I think it helps being that they aren't at eye level. I lost one to some scumbag that got pissed off at us and the landowner he was hunting on and stole one of my ladder stands, camera the whole nine yards.

Thanks guys here are some better photos of the bucks/other ones. Almost all of the photos I have are after dark, I have 3 photos of bucks during the day. I'm guessing the deer went nocturnal after the hunting pressure ramped up. I have about 7 different deer on camera ranging from spikes up to the nice 8. Sure helps having some pictures to motivate you through the off season.

So pulled cards today and eagerly anticipating next season. I have a pretty good crop of bucks on camera that made out through the season including the big 8 I passed. Enjoy some eye candy. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

We have a GSP that I don't hunt but should have, she is gun shy but one heck of a nose and loves to point. It came very natural for her and she will hold it until my Weim runs in or I have her flush. She is a great dog and very loyal, but needs to be ran and worked otherwise she and the weim get stir crazy. I have a female GSP I don't hunt her but has one heck of a nose. Our Weim is clueless when it comes to anything hunting. One thing to consider is the activity level of the dogs in question they need some room to run they can NOT be couped up in a house all day then taken for a short walk. They need to burn off energy any dog used for hunting will be like this unless it's a Lab they are lazy dogs we have had 2 and I won't own another.

Have you started your seed search?
chas0218 replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
My plan was durana clover and wheat. I might go through and do a little trimming so I have a little firewood but I'm only looking to do a couple 1/2 acre plots on my 40 acres. The closest ag fields are a mile away and the only forage they have right now are some sparse oaks on the neighbors and a few on mine. I'm just looking to draw in a few deer for the freezer and doubt anything of real size is wandering the area, but I could be surprised come bow season. There are already some nice pines the deer use for bedding and was a planning on throwing a couple plots on the other side of the property away from the bedding area to catch them going back and forth. Anyone know a good place to source Durana clover? Amazon seems to sell it but wondering if there was somewhere else in the Rochester, Corning, Watkins Glen, Elmira area. I saw some mixes on DeerAG but not really looking for mixes.
