  1. I know where you are coming from, the few times I have decided to hunt public land I have not been able to find areas that people haven't stomped through, Even when I go deep into the woods I still find where people have been either trash or many sets of foot prints.
  2. By definition it needs to be attached to the gun as one. The problem though once the gun is broken into 2 pieces it is no longer considered an "assault weapon" and can have the detachable magazine. So the mag lock will in fact work, once the gun is reassembled there is no way of getting the magazine out without then breaking the gun into 2 pieces again.
  3. You still can't have a front grip that extends past the mag well though, also can't have flash hider or any functioning muzzle accessory.
  4. I agree I would love to see an blaze orange law, at least 250 sq. in. I think this will also help with the amount of tresspassers. I don't think they will be ballsy enough to tresspass wearing orange vs face another fine. No doubt accidents happen most are preventable though and that's the problem. Unfortunately people will always shoot before sunrise and after sunset I just hope they aren't around me. There is no way for DEC to charge someone with that and people know it.
  5. I have to agree, the 10 point I shot last year came into a cut bean field with a doe. The doe was leading and I could tell it was a deer at 70 yards and 20 minutes before sunrise. The buck followed her and could also tell he was a deer. The only reason I knew he was a buck was by the neck. At sunrise they made it to 100 yards away and at that point I could still barely make out the rack but could tell it was nice. I waited that 20 minutes to see if the buck was worth taking and did take him. I will admit that it felt like an eternity. Yeah I don't stalk deer during gun season because I suck at shooting running deer, and feel like I'm more likely to get shot than sitting 20' in a tree.
  6. Now just add a human blob under the branches and you got yourself a person standing next to a small tree that got shot. I have been in the woods with blobs that look like deer bedded down through binos or the scope come to find out it was an overturned stump. Crazy the tricks your mind will play on you.
  7. That early snow gets them worried and they start grazing at all times of the day to try and build up that fat and don't loose out on that ground forage. Not saying they won't dig for their food but deer are opportunistic feeders and will take the easy road if given the chance. That natural instinct for the need to eat will override the need for safety when it comes to grazing during daylight vs night.
  8. I am curious as to what you guys and gals think about these hunting accidents. We are vague on the details of the accidents we don't know much about the situations so we can't assume something happened that didn't. In other words I don't want to get into an argument about sunrise/sunset rules. I was thinking to myself is it new hunters in these accidents or veterans that just screwed up? I mean with today's technology we can see better in low light situations, at further distances, ect. Is it because we jumped head first into allowing rifle pretty much all over the state, was there a need for it? I will admit I take my rifle into the field a lot more than my shotgun, it's mostly because those sabots are twice the price of my rifle ammo. I don't need to shoot over 100 yards most of the time but like having the ability to hit a quarter at 200 yards if needed compared to a pie plate. It is hard to think heading into the woods to enjoy some of God's gifts will be the last time you could see your family because of someone else being reckless. Having an almost 2 year old boy and expecting another boy in 3 months sure gives you a different outlook on life.
  9. Sad situation, thoughts and prayers to all effected. Yeah that is what happens when you shoot at a dark spot before sunrise or after sunset. Of course I don't want to jump conclusions it could have been an accidental discharge standing next to the person. 2 Things I want to know is if all of these accidents are rifle related? And if they are, is DEC regretting allowing rifle throughout most of the state now?
  10. Yup, I haven't saw many deer during daylight hours. This last week has them held up tight, I hunted hard the Thanksgiving, Friday and Saturday with nothing to show for it. I saw 1 deer and had a guy tresspass onto the neighbors property and sit 40 yards from me on my property. I think he finally saw my orange and left. Blew my spot with his wind blowing right to where the deer come from. I am hoping to get 1 more weekend up to my parents property hopefully next weekend to bag a doe. I saw a huge donkey doe opening weekend but passed on her because there were so many bucks chasing her. She had to be 170 on the hoof just a giant, she trumped the 2 1/2 year old bucks by a lot.
  11. With the .243 Win 95gr. I have them drop in their tracks usually. My wife high shouldered an 8 point and he flipped over backwards and dead. I use the superformance 130gr. in my .270 Win and it will fragment at close range (under 70 yards) and mushroom nicely anything past that. I have started using the nosler 130 gr. and had better accuracy than the SST but never had an issue with expansion or trauma.
  12. Don't all tags have your name on them?
  13. I saw a ton of deer and a lot of bucks, way more than the past few years. Lots of chasing going on in my area with a number of nice 8 points doing the chasing. I passed 3 different 8 points that were over 100" I am really excited to see so many making it thru the season. Also have a few whacky rack bucks running around. Amount of shots were about the same and from the usual areas. It was nice to see more deer this year after the dismal past few.

Do yourself a favor and call the state police to, DEC usually have their hands full with other stuff so the State boys is a better bet.
  15. I'm looking into doing the same. Where did you end up getting your lower parts kit? I have been looking at the ground zero precision kits but don't know of many people that use them.
  16. Wife sent me a photo of DEC SUV and 4 deer on the hitch rack. 2 Were decent bucks and 2 doe. I would imagine someone managed to get their deer confiscated. They were just south of Corning NY heading towards PA border.
  17. With the handle of the hammer. Sometimes a few good whacks while hitting the button will get her going.
  18. My wife and I were avid hunters before our first child, now she stays home with our son while I go hunting. Not that she doesn't want to hunt she is just hitting the 5 month pregnant mark with our 2nd and doesn't have any ambition to hike the hill and climb a ladder stand.
  19. Office chairs without the wheels are great for blinds...
  20. Way easier than dragging it home after locking your keys in the car...
  21. Took 6 shots yesterday, 3 with the .243 and 3 with the .270 to make sure they were still on.
  22. Seeing as it will be a west wind mostly I'll be at one of the only spots worth sitting with a west wind. Right on top of our hill, sucks because that wind will be howling up there.
  23. If I used my rifle on a small game I don't think much will be left nor do I want to ruin my chance at a deer for a squirrel or rabbit. I saw you are planning on using a .223 in a previous post, I would be more tempted but I always have that "what if" feeling.
