  1. This is how i would handle it. IF the guy gives you a hard time I would tell him that you are planning on putting a stand in that general location. If he continues to be an A-Hole I would tell him that he has no right what so ever hit deer or not to come on your property and you will call the police and press charges. We had a neighbor that thought because he bordered up to other people that gave him access to their land permission or not. We finally had enough kicking the same guy off 2 years in a row the 3rd we called the cops and they handled it. FWIW don't call local PD get a hold of the state police they will actually serve the guy a ticket. I forgot to mention we had a tower stand where a guy (not the landowner) setup a double stand 15 feet from it on the neighboring property (where we also have permission to hunt and retrieve deer) on a hedgerow that was ours (on our side of the property line) we took the stand down and notified the landowner that we have it. He all sorts of pissed that we took it down. We tried to explain it wasn't the landowners property but he didn't want to listen. Long story short he was told by the landowner to not come back. Best advice I can give is keep your cool you're going to be neighbors until someone dies or moves.
  2. I feed the squirrels and the deer seem to frequent my squirrel corn pile. They should know better it's illegal for them to eat it.
  3. I am a remington and tikka guy. I have talked with numerous reps and shooting enthusiasts and they all have said you can't go wrong with the Remington 700 platform or Tikka T3. Now for a deer caliber I recommend anything from .243 winchester to 30 caliber non magnums. I have nothing against bigger, smaller, and/or magnums calibers these are sizes I have used. IMO the magnum calibers are overkill for whitetail deer in NY. I haven't personally taken a shot over 355 yards and in NY it would be tough to get a shot much longer than that and still be safe. With that being said what kind of hunting are you looking to do? Stand, stalking, ground hunting? What kind of cover? Hardwoods, overgrown swamps? What would be your longest shot? 100 yards, 200 yards, further? Without the above information we can just throw a random caliber in hopes it works for you. I hunt swamps and open fields with a Remington 770 in .243 winchester and a Tikka T3 with .270 winchester. You need to pick and choose your shots no matter what gun you decide. I saw you were looking at the remingtion 870 you can get the express magnum just about anywhere and are good guns. My first deer gun was a 20ga. remington 870 and it killed a lot of deer. Get the gun that best suits your needs.
  4. I too think same deer, the ear is a dead give away. it would be hard for 2 deer to have the same markings on the body in the same spot. Surprised he hasn't grown a little more maybe he is a little wider this year than last. The length of tines seems to be about the same.
  5. This is the time of year DEC should allow us to hunt the yotes. I have seen more in the past month than I have all of hunting season and I haven't stepped in the woods since Feb.
  6. That is impressive! Cool picture.
  7. Thanks, I'll look into one of them. My FIL has one but I have never shot it, maybe this summer I'll get the wife to take a couple shots with it.
  8. I shoot .010 and don't use the Lollipop method. My pins are so small they don't take up much if any of the deer.
  9. Most of the time I paper tune then take one of my arrows with BH and shoot it at all distances. If I hit where I am aiming I know I'm good. The last time I shot 2 BH arrows into the target it cost me the arrrow I hit along with the nock and the BH on the other arrow. I don't do that anymore.
  10. Thanks, do you plant clover in your plots or just use the "ready plant" bags?
  11. Never tried this but I'll give it a shot this year. I usually shoot 1 arrow then 3 more but aim for the nock of the first arrow. If they hit left, right, high or low I adjust the sight accordingly usually elevation then windage.
  12. Those that have and shot one how is the recoil compared to a .243 with 90gr. bullet? I would like to get one for my wife (actually just an excuse for another gun) and she currently uses a .243 and is a complete recoil wuss. Although she has shot her 1187 20 gauge for deer she likes that .243 more. Hunting where we do there are some nice sized bear and I'm afraid that .243 wouldn't be enough if given the opportunity.
  13. I do the same as Grampy for iron sights, not sure why but more natural for me. That is why my father and I hit the target so far from each other he uses the lollipop and don't I usually hit 3" high using iron sights on his gun. Bow wise we pretty much shoot the same fraction of an inch.
  14. I was planning on clearing a small area and ATV trail that reaches the whole length of the property for better access to the back section. As of right now there is a path that goes up about half way then stops. I was thinking of planting the ATV path in a couple areas to help with erosion control and setup to be a couple "micro" plots. I have been researching and Durana and red clover are supposed to be good in shady areas. I was going to throw down some cereal rye for the time being and plant some clover in the late fall not expecting the deer to have clover then but to help it get by this winter and into the spring where I could plant it again.
  15. So my wife and I are purchasing our little plot of property here in the southern tier. It is a touch over 30 acres narrow but deep ~2500' deep and ~900' wide and just filled with oaks. I was thinking of adding a smaller food plot for some early season browse and another for some late winter browse. Any suggestions the parcel is 100% wooded with maybe 3 pines on the whole property. I am hoping to just pull a few deer into the property even though there is already a ton of sign. I will only have access via ATV with the following equipment; spring tooth harrow, ATV boom sprayer, small 1 bottom plow that doesn't work the greatest, small disc that would be great for finishing. Thanks for the help! Chas
  16. I have seen some sick looking yotes, shot one with my bow once that had blad spots (guessing mange) and was pretty lethargic. Another I shot with the bow was limping bad and snarling/coughing guessing it got hit by a car or something. Either way 20 yards were close enough to them on the ground and they weren't changing their path after they saw me draw.
  17. Our Weim has a sensitive stomach and when we had him on some cheap food our house smelled like a giant dog fart for a good week no matter how much air freshner we used. We made the switch to some lamb and rice purina 1 and no more nasty farts. Now he likes to purge his scent gland on long car rides. Can anyone say rotten tuna fish? About makes me puke especially when he starts to lick it.
  18. You just won the internet for the day enjoy! Haha these are the best I have seen in a long time. This page has the best one by far the facebook with the trophy is priceless and I have been there many times but with fishing and work....
  19. Was it on the computer? I am assuming by the "PC NICS check" it is, sometimes those take longer than the phone call. I have bought guns before in the last year about a month apart and no issues. When I bought my Smith SD at Field and stream the computer check took about 15 minutes to come back but the following month at my local shop it was longer for them to call and give the info than the approval took. Maybe they were trying to get you to pass on the Savage and buy a nice gun. Just kidding good luck with your new gun.
  20. At our cottage 3 weekends ago I put our docks and boat rail system in the following week put a metal roof on cottage last weekend I framed in the eat in island for our kitchen. This weekend it will be adding the counter tops to it and the rest of the kitchen. I am hoping when this is done I can actually get out and do some fishing. The cottage was a complete re-model but I figured it wouldn't take this long. That water has just been teasing me!
