  1. Good tip Doc. Also, make sure you arent gripping the bow tightly or trying to catch it right after the release. If you are a righty, you will torque the bow and shoot to the left. I have that issue sometimes and it takes some thought to keep myself from doing it, especially if I havent been shooting alot.
  2. Oh Im not taking it personally, you just said that you never see people talk about any factors other than what the do at the range. I just pointed out that its been talked about through this whole thread.
  3. I have found a ton of bear tracks and corn torn up on the farm this year. I have yet to catch one on my trail cam though. Im hoping to get one to walk by me this year, as my fiance wants a rug and I want to give the meat a try. I was told by someone that knows bear a ton better than I do that from the tracks we saw, the bear should be in the 250lb range. Good enough for me.
  4. Theres a hall of fame for everything lol
  5. One tip. Groups are fun to shoot, and good for sighting in, but dont mean squat for hunting, the first arrow you shoot at the target is the one that really counts. I like to shoot at different spots. On my 3D target, I take a stick of my daughter's sidewalk chalk and draw a bunch of small, half dollar sized spots on it. With each arrow, I shoot at a different spot. I also shoot at the vital areas on 3D targets, but the spot shooting really helps to keep things tight. Give it a try. Shoot small, miss small.
  6. Yeah shes already been going out hunting with me for 3 years now (shes 7) and loves the outdoors. Still have a pic of her catching her first fish on my desk at the office. Shes watched deer be field dressed, went squirrel hunting last year, rides ATVs and loves all of it. She usually tags along when I check my cams and has been out scouting the farm alot with me this year. Shes definitely a country girl. Eddie, I have been teaching her to try and keep her hair brushed back away from the bow and string.
  7. Many people take neck and head shots regularly. Head shots are pretty iffy and not my cup of tea, but whats wrong with the neck shot? Nice way to distort the conversation by throwing in trick shots, etc. Back to your usual spin DOCtor self I see.
  8. So I see you dont know a deer's anatomy past the heart, lungs and liver. And yes, a shot that ruptures the femoral, or any other major artery will cause a deer to have massive, instant blood loss and kill it just as fast as a shot to the heart.
  9. I agree with you to a point, just saying theres nothing wrong with using the tools available to you. Deer hunting gimicks have been around for a long long time, and every single hunter in the woods uses them. Camo? Dont really need that to get the job done. Steel broadheads? You dont need those, you could be using a stone point. Any bow other than a wooden longbow? Dont need that either. Treestands, blinds, trail cameras, etc etc. I could go on and on with things that could be argued as taking away some hunting skill or another. It still doesnt mean that a good hunter doesnt use the tools that work that are available to them. If you want to go into the woods and put more pressure on the deer than your presence already does by stinking the place up with human and human related smells, then by all means. Id rather keep the pressure on them as low as I can without staying out of the woods all together.
  10. http://www.dec.ny.go...door/45415.html This is a great tool on the DEC site that can help you find WMU boundaries if your property is close to the line, state land in the area you want and alot of other good info. You can even look at topo maps and areal photos.

  12. I use a Viper SS, and used to have the open shot top for it. I wasnt crazy about not having the rail. It was very light though. Good luck with it!
  13. You can go back in this thread and look at my first 5 replies to find where many other factors involved in making a long shot on the deer are plainly mentioned, actually focused upon. Never say never
  14. Finally had a chance to get her Diamond Nuclear Ice tuned up and fitted for her with her release. I had them add a d loop and she picked out a pink kisser. Im going to see how she does with it before I have a peep put in. We got home a little before dark and she wanted to take it out and shoot a bit. I got this pic of her taking her first shot. We worked on her grip a little and she shot a few pretty good ones including this.
  15. I dont understand what controversy there is about it, as long as you dont rake or pile it up, and it was just brush hogged down, its legal to hunt over. Its the same thing if you hunt near some corn that spilled out of the combine or wagon when it was being harvested.
  16. Right, but I dont believe anyone has said that it should be based solely upon one's skill at the range.
  17. Well then, hows your loin cloth and spear with stone tip do for you? Sure, there are some guys out there that will buy anything to try and be more successful, but using a scent reducer is hardly losing hunting skills and replacing them with chemicals. Its smart use of a tool.
  18. All I am saying is that its a deadly shot if you get it right. You can pull the "ethics" card all you want, but if a shot is capable of dropping a deer almost in its tracks, I would say it is 100% ethical. I would not personally take that shot on a deer, but I also do not see it as unethical. BTW, when did anyone say the femoral artery was their target?
  19. I agree Doc, I have yet to put any of the pics to much use, other than to post on here and see whats around. This year I am after a couple of specific deer though, and have a map made up of the farm, and am keeping records of where I catch pics of them. I am kind of hoping to get a better idea of their core areas.
  20. I dont really buy into the UV hype. I dont use the UV wash, and have had deer within 3 feet of me, looking directly at me and didnt seem to be able to tell if I was part of the brush I was sitting in or not. I have also had deer within 20 yards while im wearing Blaze orange, and they werent spooked. I agree that its just another ploy to try and get us to buy more crap.
  21. 100% correct. I accidentally shot a doe in the rear section last year, and hit the femoral artery. She bled out and died on the spot in a matter of seconds. If you hit a major artery like that, its the same has a direct heart shot.
  22. Well, Im not trying to argue with you, just saying if you learn about how the Indians really hunted their game, you would understand why its not comparable to todays sport hunting other than both (hopefully) ended in animals being killed. Regardless of that, if you dont play the wind, you arent going to be successful, scent control or not. But on a day where you have variable, swirling winds, scent control will help keep the amount of scent down.
  23. I keep records of all activity caught on my cam, so all of the pics (besides the ones caused by branches, etc, get organized by location and date into folders on my PC at home.
  24. It was a joke, but thanks for the info.
