  1. About 11 this morning I was working on a tripod stand I plan on using for gun hunting that overlooks 3.5 acres of corn that was put in where some orchard was pushed a couple years ago. I thought I could hear a buck doing some tending grunts out in the corn so I was figuring there was a buck with a doe out in the corn. While I was trying to look into the corn from the stand a doe came tearing out of the woods and into the corn with a small buck behind her. Once into the corn I lost sight of them. A few minutes later I hear a grunt in the woods and right on their tracks was a much better looking buck that came out and dove into the corn. It was a pretty cool encounter. Unfortunately I had to get out of there to do some other things. I have seen more rut activity this year than the last couple combined.
  2. Even in this heat things are still going on. My family and I were just out watching the beans getting cut and had a breeding party of 2 small bucks and a whopper pop out of the woods about 50 yards from us. It was awsome to have my two boys there to see it go down.
  3. Awsome! Which part was the surprise? The timing or that it was a boy?
  4. I'm not out hunting but I just had a pic of a big buck on one of my cameras.
  5. Have an excavation project going on at home and had to go check on that. On the way home I had a mature 8 pointer cross the road on a mission.
  6. I have one at my house I won at qdma banquet. We call her doelene. She hasn't made it out of the basement yet.
  7. This morning I went out to a stand that has always been good to see cruising bucks from this time of year. About 7 I heard something so I turned and looked and saw a decent looking buck about 20 yards away. I was able to stand up and get my bow off the hook relatively quickly. When he was 15 yards away in a shooting lane I let it rip. I hit just a little further back than I liked but knew I had complete pass through. I wanted to wait until lunch time but with the rain coming in a friend and I headed out about 11. I found him shortly after we started looking for him. I had hit him a bit back but he was quartering at a favorable angle for the shot. It's been 8 years since my last deer with a bow so I was pretty happy to get him.
  8. Went out a little while ago to see if I could find the buck I shot this morning with my friend. My woods are really thick with multiflora rose and buckthorn and all other kinds of nasty stuff. There was no blood to follow so I just started circling where he entered the woods while my friend stayed close to where the blood ran out as it entered the woods from my field. After about 20 minutes I found him stiff as a board. I hit him in the liver.
  9. Shot what I think was a good eight pointer about 45 minutes ago. It happened pretty fast. He took a step just as I shot and I hit him back a little. Complete pass through and no guts on the arrow. He ran across my bean field with out much of a blood trail. I marked where he went back into the woods and will give it til lunch time to go any further.
  10. Windy as heck here in 8F. Turkeys were roosted right above my stand this morning. They might be in Canada by now with this wind. Wont here the deer coming this morning.
  11. Just had a small eight pointer come in and bust up 3 does and 2 fawns I was watching. No hard chasing but definitely messing with them.
  12. I'm out in 8F for a short sit this morning. Too nice of a morning to head right out to work. One squirrel seen so far.
  13. I love them. I get excited every morning to see whats out there. Hopefully more day time pics will be coming soon.
  14. When I first started hunting I would help out butchering deer at my uncle's house. I say help out because it took me a long time to finally shoot one of my own but anyway my aunt would always cook up tenderloins in a pan with butter, salt and pepper, make some mashed potatoes and garlic bread. Man was it good! I still cook them like that most of the time now 25 years later.
  15. Dang, nice buck. Hopefully there's another big one around.
  16. So today I found some ammo for my 6.5 PRC. I figured there was no chance in hell of finding what I wanted at a dicks of all places but I stopped at the one in Webster today and they had 10 boxs. I couldn't believe it! I bought 5. I probably should have bought them all.
  17. I'm sure its possible but I doubt it happens a lot. Here in Wayne County it's apple country. Every year after harvest a lot of the orchards get a good dose of mouse bait. Thousands of acres. If it were killing all the hawks and owls I'm pretty sure they would outlaw it.
  18. I bought a new rifle in 6.5 prc. I thought I might have a hard time finding the gun. Now it appears I might not find any ammo.
  19. Have any of you guys bought ammo online? I took a ride to bass pro shops in Auburn today and they didn't have hardly any ammo. I'd like to get some rifle ammo to do some shooting before the season but have never tried ordering any online. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to order from?
  20. I've had a package sitting in the rochester hub for two weeks. Its probably sitting next to rob-c's stuff.
  21. Nice. The last few years I've gotten so I mostly gun hunt out of elevated blinds. Last year I shot a coyote on one hunt and a doe on another while my son was sitting in the blind with me.
  22. Same in my area. From what I'm gathering from trail cameras is that there's so many coons the turkeys don't have a chance to get a good brood started past laying eggs. The number of coons on my cameras at night is unreal.
