  1. I rarely post when I get a deer, I'm definitely not going to post if I lost one..
  2. I agree there's great vitals behind that 1" thick bone. Doesn't mean it was a great shot or a spot you want to aim for. Seen many shoulders stop a 150 gr 270 or a 220 gr '06. All's my saying is don't put the blame squarely on the Rage BH and suggest a different more robust head would have had a different outcome. Biggest thing is be confident in what your shooting, and make a great shot every time. Easier said than done is the catch.
  3. A light switch was turned on here in 4U. Bucks everywhere crusin. Had a doe come by and in 30 min 4 diff bucks were following her trail. All smaller.and too far. Seen a big guy in the field on the way home. Nose to the ground and on a trot. Hopefully I'll get enough done during the day to get out this afternoon.
  4. With that much energy, I doubt another broadhead would have stayed together. I butchered hundreds of deer.. found all types of heads encaced in the shoulder joint, spine, neck. Even shot a buck many yrs ago that had a 30” arrow sticking out the side of his head. It was chasing does in a field.
  5. Every broadhead has a similar story. Muzzy, one of the so called tuffest heads have failed with broken blades and bent shaft. Sorry, but IMO 90% of these ”my broadhead failed” is due to a bad hit. Hit a deer square in the shoulder joint, or another big heavy bone and any head can fail. I've never had a rage head break or bend yet.
  6. Of course this depends on the terrain, but often in thick brush/tall grass area's, I typically find more blood sign on the underside of the limbs, grasses then on the ground. As the deer pushes aside the brush, blood wipes off or sprays on.
  7. Well, I previously posted I'm not a whiskey fan.. tried many over the yrs. Today I had a Apple pie whiskey. Don't remember what brand it was, but dam was it good.. So to all you whiskey fans.. I'm sorry I doubted you...
  8. My, shoulder is not as strong as it used to be. I own a landscape company, and this time of year using the backpack blower 5+ hrs a day has me in pain and unable to draw my 45# compound. This yr I had some help doing leaf cleanup, so as long as I'm able to pull my compound back, the xbow will stay in the case.
  9. That's the collar I use, but couldn't remember the name. Works great.
  10. That's a great BT. The low exit wound is definitely a help.
  11. What do you use on your pup's? I never had luck with the oils. The collar (forgot the name) seems to work much better.
  12. I've had deer near me on opening day when someone on the neighboring land (maybe 300 yrs) shot. Barely flinched. Had does in same first during ML and had someone shoot a half mile or more away. You would have thought the shot was in the field I was hunting by the way those deer about turned inside out getting out of there. I don't believe it's the shot alone though. I think it's the combination of Hunter intrusion into their lives and the shots. By the tail end of the season, they definitely notice the shots and react accordingly.
  13. Exactly... Some have mentioned to use larger calibers. Guess I should have explained better that a larger caliber isn't always a better option. Thanks for saying what I was thinking, lol
  14. Knew a guy that hunted with a 458 win mag.. Shot lots of deer with it. You would think it would anchor them on the spot. He said many deer ran after being shot thru the lungs. Bigger isn't always better. Hit 'em rite, and you'll find 'em. Currently using a 7mm-08 with 140g. Usually see 'em drop depending on terrain.
  15. I've shot deer with everything from a 22-250 to a 35rem. Some have had great BT, some not. All depends on where hit, exit wound or not ECT. I've had tremendous BT with a 22-250. And some not so good ones with a 35 remember. Biggest mistake, assuming you missed because of a lack of blood
  16. I figured it might be a little strong by how pungent the hulls are. Might have to save a couple of the larger limb when I do that spring cleanup. Thanks for the info....
  17. I've got a client that has a dz or more of them. Never seen a deer turd let alone a deer near those trees. Sounds like I'm mowing a pile of rocks when I go over them. They smell very citrus like. Wondering if it's good wood for smoking meats....
  18. DEC consider coyotes as a management tool. Especially in populated areas where hunting is not allowed or minimal. Same in Columbia county where more often than not, large tracks of land are off limits to hunting. I've talked to our local DEC officer on a few occasions, and he admitted coyotes are a essential tool in controlling deer numbers.
  19. Never liked whiskey.. I'm a vodka or rum drinker.
  20. Walking in seen some fresh rubs and scrapes. Little spike on a does trail. Buddy had several small bucks chasing the does, grunting and sparing with each other. The big boys never showed. And I missed a coyote at 20 yrds. Shot right over his back. Was a beautiful evening it was.
  21. Glad to hear your feeling better. Congrats on the first bow buck.
  22. I've used both fixed and mechanical on both my xbow and conventional. I've had a shoulder joint stop a muzzy from a xbow at 35 yrds. I've had rage heads do the same thing out of a conventional. I've used rage for many years on my conventional setup. Love the things. Only tried the muzzy because they were already set up on the xbow I purchased from a buddy. Wasn't impressed. The fixed, mechanical debate will go on forever. BTW.. I've switched to rage for both bows.

    Dumb ?

They want does to be taken to reduce the heard. If someone wants another deer, they wat to make sure it's a doe.
  24. Had some time today, and needed some smoke therapy. 8# brisket. Came out fantastic 19# double smoked ham. Looks burnt, but it the sugars in the glaze that makes it look like that. 7# venison hind. Pulled it at 128*. Going to be sliced thin for sandwiches.
  25. Neither is Santa. Sorry..
