Leaks starting to come out about buck likely over Hanson buck score
letinmfly replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
Thanks phade. I didn't read all the posts and was going by the title of the thread and the pic. Either till a heck of a buck. -
A good friend of mine lives in New Berlin and the hunting is great up there. When you're in New Berlin makes sure to stop into his restaurant, The Country Kitchen on Main Street. Food is excellent and big portions.

Leaks starting to come out about buck likely over Hanson buck score
letinmfly replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
Heck of a buck. However, it's not overtaking the Hanson buck. Way too many deductions for it to score in the typical category as high as the Hanson buck. It'll score well as a non-typical. -
Prayers sent.

It's hard to find a more scenic state than NY. However, the taxes and political views obscure that beautiful scenery. I've had friends come and hunt here from other states such as PA, IL, AL, MS, the Carolinas and FL. They all leave with a totally different impression of they thought NY was. They all agree that it's one of prettiest states they have visited and or hunted. The were also impressed with the abundant wildlife and the kindness of the people they met. Of course they were mostly upstate people. I've often thought of moving and to where I would move to. Yet, I always choose to remain here. Yes it is very expensive to live here but it's a great state. If it wasn't we all would have left already. Maybe someday when I'll seriously think about moving but for now my family, my friends and my life is here.

My nephew and I were hunting together on opening day. Around 7am a doe came out of the Hemlocks and milled around for a few minutes. All of the sudden she ran off with her tail half raised. I told my nephew there was a buck following her and sure enough he stepped out a few minutes after she did. She was still milling around and he had his eyes fixed on her, which allowed for the noise my nephew made. LOL When the buck stepped into an opening he made the shot but the deer looked like he wasn't hit. He walked off in the same direction he came from. I waited a few minutes and went to look for him and he was down but still not dead when I found him. I waited till he expired and called my nephew to come down and see his buc, a nice 6 pointer. Still not sure who was more excited!! I'm a proud uncle to say the least!!

I've been hunting in Delaware county the last 26 years. The last three years have been the worst that I've experienced. Last year I didn't even see a deer and this year I saw two, a buck and a doe of wihch my nephew shot the buck. My personal belief is that the lack of hunters in the woods has greatly effected deer movement over the last few years. I don't see anywhere near the number of hunters that I use to. Another reason is that with the deer having been fed over the years thay have been trained to migrate to those areas to look for food and that's why a lot of them are always seen by houses. Thus, the younger deer have not "learned" to survive winters by looking for browse and causing more mortality than usual during the winters. IMO

Not many shots heard on opening day. My nephew was one of the few shots heard, he shot a nice 6 pointer at 7am. He's 15 and took his first racked buck. The buck was bird dogging a doe at the time.

Wow!! Those mounts look horrible. I feel your pain and and you have every right to be angry. I hope you get the problem resolved. Personally I think I would have beat him with those mounts!!

We put our place up for sale his year. It is 46.21 acres with a mobile home that is in great shape. There are ATV/logging trails throughout the property which makes it fully accessible from the road to the top of the mountain. Good hunting and close to town with possible access to 175+ acres of private property to hunt on as well. Hunting pressure is very light on my property as well as neighboring properties. Available only through the listing realtor. It will remain mostly furnished for buyer. Below is the link so you can see pics of the home and price. Any questions please PM me. http://odbrmls.rapml...DFhFY=&KeyRid=1

I hunt and Walton the only buck I've seen this fall was killed by a car in fromt of my house a few weeks ago. Wasn't a legal buck, new 3 point rule, but it would have been for my 15 year old nephew. Oh well... hopefully there are a couple of more that I haven't noticed. Good luck to everyone this fall and be safe!!

Seeing as how BigTom is no longer a member on here this topic should be locked or deleted as he is not capable of responding to or disputing any newer posts and thus unfair to him. WNY as a MOD you should know this as some will take cheap shots.

Thanks everyone. It was a very good day as my nephew harvested his first longbeard and I came home with great memories and Tom's prototype scratch box. If you're looking for a great sounding custom call give BigTom a shout.

My nephew's day and mine started out by leaving our house at 2:30am to meet up with BigTom. We arrived at Tom's house at 5:00am and proceeded to our hunting grounds. Our first set up was in a favorite spot of ours and we set up by placing a decoy in the field. Wasn't very long before we heard our first gobble and we began to work the bird. After a good half hour of calling to him he finally made his way into the pipe line. He gobbled but seemed to be more interested in feeding rather than looking for the hen he had heard. He started to walk away when Tom hit him with some very seductive calls from a scratchbox. That was it, he commited to coming in. It took forever for him to get closer and when he saw the decoy he headed to her. My nephew had been set up for the shot for quite some time and he was ready. The bird got to 18 yards and I told my nephew to shoot him. BOOOOMMM and the bird flew away. He missed!!!! The bird was a jake with a 4-5" beard but he gobbled and acted like a seasoned veteran. We were all disappointed but it was only 7:00am. We decided to leave the area and head back to the car and go over to Rattlesnake Hill. So named because of the two Rattlesnake dens up there. Our first set up was in a spot where Tom had seen two gobblers the previous two days in a row. We placed the decoy out and proceeded to start calling. Unfortunately we didn't hear anything and after an hour of sitting there we decided to walk up the pipe line further. As we prospected we heard nothing. We were ready to turn back when I told my nephew to give me "LOUcifer". "LOUcifer" is a collaboration call between myself and Al. I gave a couple of loud yelps and not 50 yards away a bird gobbles. All three of us make a bee-line to the other side of the pipe line and get set up. I gave a couple of more calls with "LOUcifer" and I could hear the bird drum. We could hear him walking in the leaves and Tom gave a few quiet purrs and yelps on his new prototype scratchbox and he gobbled again. We could hear him coming and with the gun already raised my nephew whispers " there he is." I saw the bird a few seconds after that and when I could see he was satnding still I told him to shoot. BOOOMMM...this time the bird went straight down. He made a 38 yard shot and killed his first longbeard. I'm not sure which one of the three of us was more happy!! The bird weighed 15.6lbs with 3/4" heavy spurs and a 10.25" beard.

Those stubby rounded points on that shed lead me to believe that it's an older buck rather than a young one. JMO
