This season was very bittersweet for me. It was the first time in 36 years that my dad wasn't in camp with me. I wasn't going to hunt this year because my dad was laying in a bed in hospice but he wanted me to go so against my better judgement I went for him. On opening day I was fortunate enough to shoot a buck and I immediately texted a pic to my sister who was with my dad. She showed my dad the pic and she texted me back that he said " he wouldn't have shot it cause it was too small." My fondest memory was that my dad still had a great sense of humor and he was still capable of making me laugh in spite of what he was going through.

Big congrats to you and the NYH family!! I remember how happy my dad was when he became a grandpa for the first time. Enjoy every minute you can with your new grandson and future hunting buddy!!

My biggest NY buck field dressed at 200lbs and my biggest buck was taken in IL and field dressed at 250lbs. Both were taken during bow season.

To anyone hunting from a tree stand please be careful and use a harness. Also use the utmost care when ascending and descending. My friend fell out of his tree stand last year on opening day of gun season and broke his neck and he has been paralyzed from the neck down as a result of his injury.

You can actually bowhunt in Westchester and Suffolk counties with a Sportsman's license.

I purchased the same exact machine back in 1997 from a friend and owned it up until last December. It is a great quad and it never let me down. I left it at camp and sometimes I wouldn't get up there for a couple of months at a time and it always started on the first try. Whether it was warm weather or the dead of winter!! If I decide to get another quad it will be another Honda without a doubt.

The number of steps you'll need will be determined by how high you'll set the stand and also on your comfort level of climbing from one step to another. I set my stand just about perpendicular to the steps for ease of getting in and out of the stand. I also set one step a little higher than the platform of the stand and another even higher on the opposite side to hold onto, so I can get above the stand and then step down onto the platform. Everyone has a preferred method and this is the one that has worked best for me. Remember that as the weather gets colder you'll be wearing heavier clothing and climbing won't be as easy as in the early season, so your steps should be placed at a comfortable distance for climbing with bulkier clothing.

Heck...I'm excited for him!! Hope he gets a crack at on those bucks!!
