Been catching bullhead with my Ugly Stick in Tonawanda Creek downstream from the Alabama swamps for a few weeks now. Bullhead capital of the state. Plenty of snags; bring lots of hooks and sinkers. Nice cold water makes for better tasting.

We had enough of a run, Sunday through Tuesday night to start the evaporator. Some trees started running dribbles of clear sap again after two freeze thawing cycles of shut down. Glad I left some tapped. Strange year, to say the least.

I don't post rub trees like this on the grounds it might intimidate.

Remember, the small horns of today are the big antlers of the future. It's always fun to stack the years of growth, if possible.

We're going on April 2 and 3. Maybe be a little warmer without that nasty east wind. We're visit Schumacher Farms, Sweet Dream Maple Farm, and Wolfs Maple Products. Try their homemade donut with maple cream glaze.

How has everyone maple season been? Last run was March 12th - 14th here; deep woods trees. Sap still nice and clear. Ratio of 52 to 1. About 3/4 the sap of last season with more taps in. Just under 6 gallons of syrup off 300+ gallons of sap. I'm still optimistic for another run as temps are surging into upper 30's today.

This is the reason we switched over to BH209. I'm done fighting with pellets.

Spent just an hour yesterday. Big one first, looked over to my right and there laid the small one. Flash; lighting strikes in the same spot three times..

I've been tapped since 1/31. My peak production was Monday 3-6 at 47 gallons. I had some trees not run this last go around , most likely due to bacteria in the tap hole and budding. I try to keep my sap on ice until boil, but as long as it's 38 F. or below, you're alright. We had a good freezing night last, so hopeful it will run today with highs near 60. The tree buds swell, sap may continue to run, but be cloudy. Lower quality syrup. Oh, and that 47 gallons only amounted to 1 gallon of syrup. Sugar content came up some, from 57 gallon in early Feburary.

The red wing blackbirds were singing above my sugar house this morning. First time boiling in my shirt sleeves.

At 13, I was growing buckwheat, oats, wheat, and hay which were sold. At 17, I grew truck crop and sold up on the North Tonawanda market . Cider sold for $1.25/ gallon and potatoes were $2/ peck. Cauliflower and brussel sprout were $2. I we had a good fall, I would pinch off the extra shouts on the broccoli and make some real money, LOL. I always sold about 100 pumpkins for about the same price as now. I went to college on the profits and waisted the money.

All you need is some maple trees, 5/16" taps, food grade containers to hold the sap on the tree, a container to gather- hold the sap, and something to boiling down the sap into syrup. Turkey fryers with a big stainless steel pan can be used. I prefer a slight smokey taste done over a wood fire. Days like this, I fall far behind due to excessive flow.

My deep woods trees are dripping every second. The outer trees have already stopped. Buds have swelled on those.

Back the last day of January, I was excited that this year might be an extended sap run. Still optimistic that the season isn't ending early. More like the mid 70's kind of year.

Some tend to forget that people do have feelings. It nice to have constructive conversations without the put downs and name calling. It's also against the rules of this site.
