  1. Everyone that's boiling; what is you sap to syrup ratio running? My first boil February 2nd was 56 to 1. Fridays has dropped down to 47 to 1. We usually run nearly 3 percent sugar content by mid to late March. Looks like another boil down day on yeap year. Dang if I didn't drop my hydrometer Friday. Now is when a spare would have come in handy. Ordered two red line, calibrated ones from Smokey Lake. Will be much easier to see.
  2. Been seeing Bluebirds for better part of two weeks. I'm waiting arrival of the Red Wing Blackbirds males to return. Usually around the 20th of March here, Sure sign Spring is near. Neighbor saw Turkey Vultures in the swamp. He's near sighted though, LOL.
  3. I always believed the tumbling a hide was just part of the process of wet tanning. What type of time factor are you talking Joe? We have mounts that were wet tanned 20 years ago, that are not smiling yet.
  4. Galvanized steel contain the heavy metal zinc and should never be used for food storage or cooking. Cooking in galvanized containers produces zinc oxide flumes. Stainless steel for cooking and approved" food grade" plastic for storage. Full size 22ga. steam table pans, 6" deep work well for the hobbiest.
  5. Only small scale compared to some producers on here. Hope to have 14 gallon of syrup, come seasons end. We ran out from 9, last season. Once family and friends get a taste, it seems you never have enough, LOL. Pics are from 11 oclock this morning. I had to count how many taps I did put out; 61 total. This whole maple thing can become addictive, as others have warned.
  6. Today marks the fifth boil down day this month. It's "Sugar Time."
  7. Seen a flock of Canadian robins the other day. They were all singing " Oh Canada........................."
  8. Should have showed the other end of the horse.
  9. Been out several hours in known drop locations. Not a horn, tooth, or nail. I believe deer will keep what they got, and just add to it, this season, LOL.
  10. Good artist that take extreme pride in their work; it can take a while. If you take as many as we do, turn around rate is about 3- 4 months. He knows the cash is waiting, LOL.
  11. I'm seeing more rabbits while shed hunting. Not finding the dead ones of last winter. They all look to be in good shape this year.
  12. My point: the fines don't fit the crimes. Put them on a road crew digging ditches with a shovel. Have them walking along side the road, or in some of these game preserve parking lots, picking up trash. Hard labor fines stick with people more than money. I suppose the union people would be all over this.
  13. No excuse for ignorance of the law. Handbooks are free where licenses are sold. Did these people lose their license ? More in likely, a slap on the wrist small fine.
  14. I shot my shotgun once yesterday, till the scope came loose. Awful nice sunshine around two oclock. My 20 going to be ready for turkey season this year, LOL.
  15. When the air is fresh and the winds in your favor, can almost sniff them. I almost can tell the day, when I'll find one. A positive attitude is the upmost importance. Here, most of the bucks are still wearing them. I think it will be a later drop because of the mild winter.
  16. We see large groups of deer during muzzleloader season, then over the past several winters, a group of 7 or 8 mature fawns, with two to four mature deer on scattered days. I'm sure patterns will change here once farmers start growing more vegetables with the coming of Pride Pak Canada building a new processing plant, one county over.
  17. All this shed hunting talk made me go out late yesterday afternoon. Soaked up that sunshine, I did. Used the light of the silvery moon to walk through the full ditches. Dam near bought the farm on a boot full. No luck yet. Good luck Biz!
  18. The trees run here Friday afternoon for a few hours. Some of my old standbys ran into Saturday until the sun went behind the clouds. Not the sap flow of mid to late March but, some of the lightest golden amber syrup I have ever made. Monday will be my 3rd boil down day.
  19. Beautiful day yesterday. You just can't beat it for Feburary 20th. Makes you feel like turkey season not that far off. Tapped more maples, new power steering pump on the car, set some trusses on the sugar shack, sold a few ton of hay and shed hunting right up till dark.
  20. It's tough to find sheds when the deer are still wearing them, as in the case around this area. The only thing I might add is somehow, I get the feeling a shed is close by. Sometimes, I actually think I can smell them. What the hell is wrong with me?
  21. I keep a small farm atmosphere to attract game birds. It works!
  22. What does the stock market have to do with this? LOL.
