Yes, just a few typical winter days coming. Nothing that can't be handled. I get to plow my driveway for the first time this winter; can't wait.

Maple Syrup Season 2017
landtracdeerhunter replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
It was a very interesting day gathering sap Wednesday doing the hurricane force winds. Didn't lose any maple but, plenty f other damage. I was thinking about the producers on pipeline; how much work you now have before the next flow. How did everyone else fair? -
Nearly thirty hours powerless. We had a great time reverting back to a more suttle way of living. A big Thank You to National grid for the help. My hats off to the road crews and all they do!

I have many VHS tapes. Pick up the tapes for little or nothing. Questionable VHS players for $10 or less on flea markets. Proven working ones are a bit more.

I look for reduced decoys to sell for lawn ornaments.

Maple Syrup Season 2017
landtracdeerhunter replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
Yesterday was the coldest boil down day this year for me. That cold wind just keeps a howling. Ran oak firewood for an extra hot fire. The hotter the fire; the darker the syrup though. -
Wildflower ID/ "Blooming onions"???
landtracdeerhunter replied to wooly's topic in General Chit Chat
Noticed some of the wild flowers in the woods, popping sprouts up through the leaves. Willow are out. I heard this familiar singing above my head. Looked up and there were the Red Wing Blackbirds males already back from their winter home. Earliest in recent memory that I can recall. -
Maple Syrup Season 2017
landtracdeerhunter replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
Looks good! Our syrup has also turned darker but, the good news is the sugar content reached just over 3%. Weather conditions seem right with freezing few days, then a warm up for good runs. Some of my January tapped trees didn't run this last go around as expected. -
When United States citizens will not work the jobs needed; because of labor and wages offered, who do you employ?

I go to the town hall because I like a hard copy. I like to think some of my money stays local also. That may be myth.

Frost seeding clover
landtracdeerhunter replied to Pygmy's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Did you get it broadcasted Pygmy? I like frozen ground for walking purposes. I have never had any luck spreading seed on prior seedings. Stand is thinner. I like a grain base to seed on where the ground was worked in the fall. Takes better here. -
Daughter and I shed hunting
landtracdeerhunter replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
Shed hunting is so much fun. Find so many items left by others; one persons junk is someone else"s treasure. good luck to both of you! -
Do you really believe this? What do successful bear hunters do with the carcass?

Maple Syrup Season 2017
landtracdeerhunter replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
Trees are slowing due to non freezing nights. Sugar content increasing rapidly. Ratio has come way down from 62 to 1 to 47 to 1. The end result; oh it so good. Glad I tapped early, now that I see the 30 day outlook. -
Seems like every time I find a new shed, it's never in the same area of previous years.I always get a feeling when I'm out; of finding one. Kinda like a water wizard, LOL. It's also difficult to find'em when their still wearing them.

Making a new hunting knife
landtracdeerhunter replied to BellR's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
I ended up with a billet that is far from perfect. Not able to get a 10" tracker that I want, but can cut around the indents for some smaller knives. I believe now, that the flux is getting between some layers of steel. This damascus making is sure trying to learn, but we will succeed. I will take some pics for posting. -
I haven't had carp in a good many years, or maybe I have, LOL. Anyways, a carp fixed correctly is really good.

I don't have a local Arby's close by. Besides, it would take the forge to long to reheat in this wind. Do they have delivery drone service, LOL.

Making a new hunting knife
landtracdeerhunter replied to BellR's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Now working on a damascus ( layered) forged welding tracker knife. Combination of an ax and knife on one handle. Using 1085 and 15N20. Colder than the blazes out in this wind even with the forge cranking. Hopefully, their will be no imperfections as in the last damascus billet. Think I got tach welding the pieces down pat now. -
Plot screens/ Cover
landtracdeerhunter replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I planted a switchgrass a few years back that got head high. About 2 acres which required about 20# of seed. Got the seed from Welters which I had to order the year prior. Believe the name was Cave Something. The deer made pathways into it creating excellent bedding areas. Young deer seemed to like it the best. Turkeys loved to go in the pathways for some reason. Got seed heads on it but never set seed. The only downfall was tough to see into; we never new a deer was in it, until they heard us coming and ran out. Bucks visited it during breeding, but only in dark. It goes very quickly, given the right conditions. I enjoyed growing it; something different, know one else had. It was quite tough to plow under and had a very tough root system. -
Looks like your cardboard blinds are holding up very well. By the name, would be a good spot for deer to come in to drink during season. I am surprised how much snow you have on the ground. Barely an inch with lawn grass exposed here.
