  1. Grain crops need a 60 degree of higher soil temperature for good germination. Keep that in mind when planting. When I think of notill, The use of a heavy disc style planter seeded directly into the soil without cultivation . I use it in certain applications, like wheat or radish after spring oat planting.
  2. Quite a few vineyard expansions up this way with all the wineries. Their all looking for more grape production. Ought to be some good ice wine made this season with all of this cold weather. Reminds me of cough syrup, LOL.
  3. LOL, a couple hundred bucks is a lot of money to me.
  4. Thanks for asking! ; LOL, I always seem to get on the field when their good and muddy. If the winters lighter in the second half, I plan on seeding before maple season starts and the surface is free of snow. I don't care for April frost seeding, the past winters we have been having.
  5. Stay with FWD and slow down. Enjoy the fuel economy savings. Their are limitations to 4WD and AWD vehicles as I witnessed coming home during the last whiteout from Rochester on the 513, Saturday after Christmas.
  6. I have frost seeded acres of red clover, trefoil, and other legumes for 45 years now. Never tried in January though; because the snow pack is usually to deep to walk through. Oils coat the seed which will protect it. I know for a fact February works fine. I'll be seeding winter wheat with a mix of above said seeds, oh 5, 6 acres or so for hay and deer forage.
  7. I like to let out a good turkey yell with my regular voice. I start practicing when I get an elbow in the back, in the middle of the night from the misses, usually about March. I take a good box, slate, crow, and peacock call. Any one might work a particular day; and then again maybe none. Their is always blow on a piece of grass, between the fingers to fall back on.
  8. No somehow they find their way into the cedar swamp. There is a little slope in the field headed towards the cedars so maybe they rolled that mile how bout that, more baiting For those that don't have a clue; coming off one of the wettest summers in a number of years. Dam lucky just to cure and bale hay, let alone get it out of the field without ruining the field. Once you cut a rut with heavy equipment, that rut shows through many plowings in future years. If you think leaving round bales out along hedge rows( original drop spot) is baiting, I sure not alone. Some people that usually shoot their mouth off , don't have a clue. Now 7 pages cont.; LOL..
  9. Quite a few old timers have lost their head gear already, which in my opinion means stress. My shed hunting has already started with one in hand, so far. Buck fawn showings all season, but now have entered the red willow thickets with intense eating, while more mature are still field eating radish, grasses protected , opening up areas in the 7 inch snow pack. Corn and soybean fields are being visited, with little eating. Groups of 3 and 4 hanging together, while flocking has not entered their minds, of tougher winters past. Deer all have good body mass, so far. Doe had heavier fat reserves; time will tell.
  10. I Transit Road is accident prone all the way to the city line. The extended 45 zone north of Tonawanda Creek didn't seem to help. Redesign is the only answer.
  11. The "New York Outdoor News" is my favorite read these days, and yes; just for the stories, LOL.
  12. I lean toward the GFCI circuit breakers if the line is dedicated to GFCI circuit. Use can use standard receptacles which need to be clearly marked. Far less mechanical parts to fail . A 15 amp breaker can be picked up for $40 retail and very easy to install if you know your way in a panel box. The inspectors I get, prefer this installation.
  13. The key to enforcement of the law is for citizens to report those that break it. Just the threat of getting caught should deter some that break it. For the few others that insist on shooting deer after hours; a nice reward $ could be an answer to deter a few more.
  14. Good for you. Those boots dryers are the nuts. Mine never gets hot and the boots are never stiff like air drying.
  15. Merry Christmas. May the spirit of giving fill your hearts. Was in checkout line in Walmart yesterday and a guy in front of me was a little short on cash for bottled water. I handed him a 5 and he just wouldn't take it; so I handed it to the cashier. It felt good to help someone.
  16. We had a lot of standing corn going into 2nd week of firearm season on the western side of the state. Time will tell if this had an influence in deer harvest numbers. I know a lot of antlerless permits were still available at the time muzzleloader season started in our area. Hunter pressure back way off at muzzle start and were were seeing this then. Nice to pass these bucks so they have a chance to mature more.
  17. Shed season comes early for some. Good luck in looking and success.
  18. I wonder when New York will try to make bird feeders and feeding illegal? Maybe they should issue a $15.00 permit like the fee imposed on everything else. Be a good money maker for the state, and just think of the fines they could collect from it?
  19. I also have a bird feeder in my large back yard. Chuck full of of birdseed, crack corn, deer fat and everything else birds like. In feeding, birds throw seed on the ground; ( little poachers) I shovel around the feeder when it snows. I get some turkeys when the snow get's deep on the level. When the snow goes away, so do the turkey. I always like to see them wing in.
  20. I drilled my breech plug out on my Inline and ended the miss fire with Blackhorn 209.
  21. If those round bales were baled, net wrapped, and still on the field in the original drop spot since September, do you think it's a sin? Been quite the year for haying. I feel bad, LOL.
  22. I will enjoy the last day of deer hunting just as well as I have enjoyed the first. Should of, would of, could of is not an option though and never will be in my mind. I enjoy deer season to dam much to ever ruin it with that train of thought.
