  1. I also like to find old wood formations. I'd like to incorporate this into a turkey full mount, someday.
  2. Thank you. I have no trouble selling the grain and straw locally.
  3. I would say it's a matter of personal choice. I know some that have had broken tines replace, and a very good job done by taxidermist. Others leave the rack like they found it. If it's repaired however, I don't believe it can be entered in the NYBBC. book.
  4. How did the no-till work out for you last season? Let's say I am a big fan of Allis Chalmers.
  5. I plant common soft white winter wheat yearly for $8 for 50# bag. As long as it has not been put through a dryer to kill the germ, it will grow very well. Know to most of you, this doesn't mean to much, but I have harvested 58 bushel to the acre wheat with this seed/ 250# of 10-20-20.
  6. Kept my first $2 bill when they first came out. Became a lucky charm as of sort. Meant my girlfriend- wife shortly there after. Somehow, it got used on our honeymoon.
  7. . Different bark compared to the ash split behind it. Looks more like maple.
  8. White ash is a common wood in this area. I use it in most areas of woodworking where strength is not needed. Easy to work with and finishes well. I am trying to get some black ash started for basket weaving.
  9. I can tell you Doc that when the snow pack comes on, the deer are under the hickory trees digging. Deer tracks in the snow for a give away. Have found a few sheds there also.
  10. I broke a plastic tap off inside of a tree last season. Wasn't sure what it would do to the tree so I drilled it out, just to be sure.
  11. I don't like putting anything foreign in my blood stream. Remember, their could be a worst reaction to the flu shot than the flu itself . China a big player in American vaccines.
  12. Good bunny hunting after a fresh snow just after sun rise.
  13. Us elderly have to watch our sugar intake. To many carbs. and you've bought the farm.
  14. Shag bark hickory nuts are great for human consumption. We put them in cookies, cakes, and other pastries. We had a bumper crop in 15. The last two years haven't been that great. Just enough for the squirrels.
  15. I enjoyed reading your story. I'm more excited for you about QDM part. Glad to see your effort rewarded in that caliper of an animal that you get to see even thou the harvest couldn't be completed.
  16. Some great points here. The only thing I can add is we dump green black walnuts in the hard gravel driveway to husk. Driving vehicles over them do an excellent job husking. Makes a good dye also. Great $ maker in lumber also. Neighbor sold medium size logs last winter for $800 per.
  17. We have an oak and shag bark hickory woods. Deer eat the oak nuts first, then tend to go after the hickory nuts when oak are used up. They come in quite often when the snow pack builds up to eat hickory. Never find many shells so I believe they eat shell and all. That may not be right though. Squirrels are nuts about hickory. Unfortunately in New York any time nuts are located into a different area than a nut tree, it's considered feeding and is against the law.
  18. My son makes a yearly run down to Forestville and buys bulk juice from Walkers. A very nice operation and well worth a trip to see.
  19. Mine is 100% real maple syrup. If it's called maple syrup, it has to contain real maple syrup. Maple industry is real strick about this. Other wise, it's just processed cane sugar with artificial ingredients.
  20. Their is a ton of information on Youtube about do it yourself evaporators. Use some of it with a grain of salt though. Barrel stove with 6" depth steam table pans work good, but I burned my barrel out in two seasons. A blower on the intake helps, acting like a forge. Make sure your fire hits the bottom of the pan for a more efficient boil , what ever fire pot you use. Good luck! Added: The larger the pan surface area with a good hot fire. higher the evaporation rate.
  21. Another early year for Maple Syrup .With the warm up coming this weekend into next week, I installed maybe 12 taps on some extra trees. Tapped a few last year on the 17th. Sugar concentration was extremely low as early sap usually is. My best was on March 8th last. I remember it well walking in the woods with caution as 75mph. wind gusts give no mercy to the trees. Will most likely hold off tapping the rest until February, but that is highly fluid on the weather. . Only upgrade this season is a larger transport tank, so only one trip need be made, ( I don't hope, LOL). How is everyone else doing?
  22. A family member has a Outback AWD and loves it. Getting 29 city MPG. Handles great. Terrific dependability. Only drawback was he had to pay few thousand more.
  23. I carry a "good" metal shovel in all the vehicles just in case, LOL.
