  1. 23 and 35 respectively, both from a 17ft platform. The outlet in the bear was my buddy. My 2 were touching.
  2. IMHO, small game hunting and wingshooting in particular, can be more exciting than deer hunting. That is, unless you're @Buckmaster7600 and you hike across mountain ranges in pursuit of the game. Having birds come in so fast that you don't have time to reload your gun is a lot of fun. It's also usually more of a group outing. Deer hunting is awesome. It's hard to beat the rush of adrenaline when you send it, and definitely yields more meat when you have a successful hunt, but it's much more of a solitary thing.
  3. My last pair of Rocky boots lasted me about 10 years and only cost $50 or so. I used them for everything outdoors and never had a complaint. The pair I had wasn't the warmest on super cold days, but I knew that when I bought the 400g Thinsulate model. The finally fell apart last year so I ended up grabbing a similar pair of Field & Stream boots from Sportsman's Warehouse. Similar construction, lightweight. Hoping I get 10 years out of these.
  4. Rinella and the guys over at THP are refreshing. Rinella seems to have become an ambassador for the sport. Not only does he put out content with MeatEater, but he has cook books, does appearances on more main stream media (if you can call Joe Rogan main stream), does appearances (anyone else watch that one where he shuts down the vegan?), and now is launching Meat Eater edition knives and rifles. If we need someone to be the face of the sport, I'm glad it's him.
  5. She looks how I feel after one too many drinks and before i break the seal..
  6. I just youtube'd this. Looks like a solid option. I might have to keep an eye out for a pressure canner.
  7. I ended up getting a new blade for the hacksaw. Still a lot of work, but a little safer than what i tried. I've read that it's easier to cut through if the whole thing is frozen. That's why i tried it that way. You're the chef though, so I'll take your advice!
  8. I tried osso buco a few weeks back and learned a valuable lesson. Using a circular saw on frozen shanks is NOT a good idea. Just in case anyone else has that great idea, trust me, it's not that great of an idea...
  9. What do you guys do with shanks? I try real hard to remove all silver skin and connective tissue when i process the deer, and the shanks seem to be full of these. I know some people grind them up. I just worry about putting all that less desirable stuff in with the grind. So for you guys that keep 'em unground, what's your go to recipe? osso buco? smoke 'em whole? slow cooker? I've got 8 or 10 of these in the freezer and need a good recipe to use with them to use 'em up.
  10. I try to shoot 2-3 times per week. I really focus on making that first shot count, focusing on form and mechanics. After that I practice different conditions like holding for 30 seconds at full draw before the shot. I even scamper up to my garage roof to practice shooting from an elevation. Probably send 50-60 arrows per week.
  11. Found this fella in the garden this morning. Was hoping for a rabbit but this shows up instead. I think this is who has been helping himself to by tomatoes. Anyone have any good recipes?
  12. Love it. To be fair, I don't have a ton of bow experience. I couldn't say how it compares to Hoyt or PSE, Matthews, etc.. For me though, it's light in the hand, no hand shock, balances well, quiet, and is a shooter. The heavier arrow setup I'm using is causing my arrow speed to drop a bit, but still plenty fast enough for deer.
  13. Diamond Provider bow Carbon Express X-Force Advantex crossbow Savage .308 Remmington 887 Nitro Mag or H&R single shot. The Remy is a pump, but the H&R has a much shorter barrel. It's actually a 10ga barrel drilled for a 12ga. It feel like a cannon, but has mild recoil. Traditions Vortek Ultralight LD Not sure how much time I'll actually have this year, but these are the tools if and when I do get out.
  14. Just got back in from pulling cards. The forecast didn't call for rain, but they were wrong. I got soaked through. I got pix of fawns that still have spots as of a few days ago, a guy teaching his kids that trespassing is ok, and a few decent bucks to look for...
  15. Cleaning up the cards tonight before swapping them tomorrow. Cave across a few more to keep an eye out for..
  16. 20yds, draw, hold for 30 seconds, shoot. Holding between 15 and 25 yrd pins.
  17. This was probably in 2008 or 2009. My first time hunting from a stand. He came in at 7:35 on opening day following a doe. He circled behind me at about 40 yards and was on the ground by 7:45. Mossberg 500 with copper sabots. After that I thought hunting was easy!
  18. Sorry to hear about this. Any thoughts on who the perps are? Does it appear like a random act or do you think they knew what they were after?
  19. Hard to say from the photos. The antlers in the day time pic look to be a little taller? Also I don't see any brow tines in the night pics, but do see them in the day time pic.
  20. I've been using a Bradley Original electric smoker for a few years. It was ok, not great. It had a hard time getting up to temp when the air temp was lower than 75. Customer Service wasn't the most helpful, so I have been casually looking for replacement. Last week I picked up a Pit Boss 3 Series Copperhead. Still electric, although now I'm using pellets instead of pucks. It has a digitial temp panel with a manual temp control knob. I'm only one smoke in, but so far so good. Picked it up on end of season clearance for $150 (MSRP $400).
  21. I'll tell you what, if I hadn't just bought a bow in the spring, I'd be all over this. They're already set for my DL and DW.
