  1. Fish the foam and eddys. I haven't had great success during high water but all of our streams up here are dark or muddy looking..
  2. I have said before that i am mostly on the side against antler restrictions.. After following and partipating a little in these threads, I am thinking of climbing back on the fence.. It seems that most, who do not want the DEC to limit our choice in what buck you shoot are happy to limit our choice in how many we shoot. If that is our option, I am fully onboard with antler restrictions. I usually try to shoot a buck that's 120" or more,Roughly.. I'm far from an expert... l have settled. If the rut is winding down that bigger 6 or smaller 8 that got a pass before , is fair game .If I'm successfully then I am monster hunting. Never been successfull on a monster....yet....lol.. So basically the 2nd tag allows me to have successful hunt on a decent N.Y. buck and still allow me to be in the woods and hunt for the next one. So for me anyways AR would not really take my choices away. OBR would definitely .. Like we say.....jmho OBR is fine for those of us who can move on to another state to hunt a buck after filling their N.Y. tag. But many/most cannot .
  3. Lol.. I refer to myself as..... THE MASTER evil trophy hunter......;l
  4. True, there are 0 dmps in 6a . Preference points or land ownership will not help.
  5. True. Makes me think that this may be a decent example of what is/could happen in N.Y.. If the hunting goes to crap , we probably would start seriously consider spending our 2 weeks In another state, an I absolutely love hunting the park..We have talked about elk trips etc.. And we all said we would have to schedule it around the time we hunt the park. Realistically 3 points or better AR is not that much of a restriction. I bet 50% or better of 1 1/2 year olds have 3 points on 1 side.
  6. I know, right?. I am a terrible fence sitter on AR.. while I am mostly on the side of no AR now, I do like what I have seen as a result. If the park becomes like home with 20 little bucks for every bigger one I am switching sides again..lol . I am really hoping the dropping of AR on the park isn't the end of an era.
  7. My thoughts on AR have changed. I initially supported restrictions. I hunt 2 areas .. 1 area with ARs and locally without.. odds of shooting a buck are way higher in the area with AR. Not only are there 2 1/2+ year old bucks all over there are more of them. I keep thinking if locals would just take it easy on the young ones there would be many older bucks locally as well.. The same people wining about the lack of bucks especially older bucks are usually the same ones that shoot the 1st thing with horns that steps out.. Kinda bugs me a little.. The problem locally is due more to the fact that the women are better hunters than the men.. They always fill there tags 1st. I'm sure this is legit occasionally, but most haven't stepped foot in the woods I have come back around to not supporting AR. Even though I would support AR over OBR. I don't like the direction our hunting is going.. Less about the hunt and more about the trophy. I am a deer hunter 1st. I will take enough does to eat. I have taken a pile of young bucks when i was younger. Just because ive " graduated " to targeting more mature bucks doesnt mean everyone has too... Same goes for the 1buck rule.. I dont want to be punished for someone elses lack of restraint. Heck, I wouldn't care if the 2nd buck tag required 8 points and 15" spread. At least I would still be out there hunting. I've killed a number of 8 to 10 points and waited for something bigger than 140" for my 2nd tag. You know how many times I've succeeded? Not once ....yet...lol. Personally, I'm afraid obr would just lead to many years without a buck. Eventually this would decrease my hunting satisfaction and be frustrating.
  8. I cannot wait to hear the peepers. I live right along a huge swamp.. darn thing still has ice on it in spots..
  9. I gave some examples above.. I live on the edge of the northern Adirondacks. The pieces of land I hunt have 10s of thousands of acres.. plenty of these opportunities Reading your response , makes me add.. standing on the level of these openings probably would not afford one a 300 yd shot. Sitting on a small ridge, knol, or on top of a beaver house , could.. I have done all the above..
  10. I've never seen a clear 300 yard shot through the woods. I have seen plenty of clear 300 yd shots in the "big" woods. Could be across an old or new beaver dam swamp. 1 ridge to another, river banks..etc.. Given a choice I wouldn't limit myself to a "short range weapon". Farm land is not the only place for long shots... I know I check out many spots in Letchworth that make me long for my 300....lol
  11. Maybe growing up and living in a rural environment changes my perception. I just don't see it...
  12. The 270 is a great deer cartridge. To many, it is the perfect deer round... Basically a 30 06 necked down to .270
  13. I think blaming the government for a lazy generation is too easy.. Parenting is the real problem. I have not had legal issues hiring 16 year old summer help in the past..The problem is finding someone who wants to work.. depending on the job 14-15 year old kids can work too, as long as it's not on a roof or similarly dangerous job...
  14. 100% agree. My only point is directing our resources and anger at the illegal aliens is mostly a waste of emotions and resources. We need to address the root of the problem. Directing our resources and emotions in support of illegal aliens is just plain stupidity.
  15. Another tractor to check out is a TYM. My fil bought one a few years ago. Its around 35hp and he paid 17,000 for it with front loader.. He has around 1200hrs on it with zero issues. He thoroughly abuses it too..lol As a former logger, he treats the tractor like a skidder.. I was a little skeptical about an "off" brand tractor but this one passes the test.
  16. Though this is true.. high school aged kids are out of farm jobs not so much due to regulations but because of how our farms have changed.. Local farms have went from 100s of 50-100 head dairies to dozens of 1000s of head dairies. The farms i worked on as a kid are no longer there.. they have been gobbled up by larger ones ,based too far away to ride my bike. Due to scale, its not worth the farmers time to have part time help when they can hire full time .
  17. This may or may not be true.. If you shot one of these bucks you would be following the spirit of the law if not the rule.. Tbough, you couldn't be shocked or indignant if issued a ticket .
  18. Very true, Doc.. What still burns my butt though is how "fake" our enforcement really is.. We talk about following our existing rules, building walls, and a whole list of ways of cracking down on illegal immigeants.. Meanwhile, I can go for a couple hours car ride and find dozen BP agents parked in conspicuous spots all over the north country. On this same car ride I probably would drive past at least 100 illegal aliens working on our local farms... Imo, we will continue to throw money into the wind until we start making the employers liable.. there wouldn't hardly be a single IA up here if not for all the work available. Never, or not likely to happen because these same farms are owned/run by the people who helped put our elected officials in power.. Say one thing and do something different.. As a broad generalization. Republicans are our largest "anti immigration" party, yet employ most of them..Do we really think they/we are going address the real problem? Ha ha ha..lol The problem on a local level is ...The work force the farms used to employ, younger or uneducated sections of our population, are on welfare with no interest or incentive to actually work.. The Mexican or Guatemalan who walked, hitchhiked,snuck,etc.. 3000 miles to work is not the problem it's the lazy American and our system.. until we fix that they will come..
  19. Even though I sit in a stand 75% of the time, I have probably shot 33-50% of my deer sitting on the ground in a brush pile or ,tall grass, behind a tree,etc.... Hmm.maybe I should take a lesson fromy this..lol.... I have taken all my nice bucks from the air though... if I were going to just hunt "deer" I would just throw a stool over my shoulder and go.. These are my figures for bow hunting..if I factored In firearms, I have shot most of my deer from the ground.. And like Archery most of my nice bucks were shot from the air.
  20. I bought one a couple years ago and love it. Make sure you get the strap instead of the chain hanger... It is as comfortable as my summit. I have spent many a day napping.. I mean hunting out of it..lol .. I haven't weighed it, but I bet it weighs more than its advertised weight though.
  21. Doe to buck ratio.... https://www.qdma.com/reality-doebuck-ratios/ Qdma article , but there are quite a few others out there that show the same math..
  22. I have an older API and summit viper.. I have used my friends lone wolf's and a few other stands but I prefer the summit. Fairly light and simple. I would buy another API like mine but they are no longer made.. It is the one that has a foot platform that folds out..
  23. I voted climber because that is what I use 90%+ of the time... they are quick to set up and portable . Now if I had a lot of private land to hunt exclusively(and a lot more $) I would have portables set up everywhere...They are easily concealed and can be placed high in trees. I like to be 20'+ up or tucked in a thick tree or in a crotch.. I have a few set up on my property and you cannot beat being able to walk into the woods and climbing into stand. No set-up required...
