  1. This is important to us.. It still burns my @## that the state is just getting around to establishing land use practice on 10s of thousands of acres they bought outright or easements on localy over 10 years ago.(long pond easement, grass river,etc..) Imo if we"state" buys forest land of any significant size it needs to be open to hunting.
  2. This is the truth.. Poorly prepared venison can ruin the experience . If we do not cut the deer up ourselves Im very picky in choosing a meat cutter. The only bad venison I've had came from a bad meat cutter .
  3. I haven't noticed a big difference . But the deer I have shot in the big woods (northern Adirondacks without an agricultural field within at least 10 miles) do seem to be a little tougher and gamey.. Of course the smallest one I have killed in the hills weighed 170# .Interestingly enough , I found their bellies full of mushrooms twice ...
  4. For close to 20 years I reloaded for my 308 ,125gr Spitzer bullets pushing 3000fps .The bullet always looked like this after shooting a deer. Often I found it against the hide on the opposite side. If shot behind the front shoulder there will be 0 shot in meat.. Mush for lungs. For me this is perfect bullet performance. 100% energy tranfer. ; )
  5. ML or my rifle I usually carry 3 .. enough for a couple deer and 1 just in case . .. I think if many hunters at least used the mindset of only having 1 shot there would be a lot less wounded deer....
  6. In truck headed home.Had a great time on the park again. It was the worst year we have had on the park as far as buck and doe sightings go though. we passed a handful of small bucks,. One 3.5 year or older 10 point, 1.5 year old 6, 2.5 year 6, and a wounded spike, and 3 doe were shot.. we had intentions of sticking with antler restrictions but the spike was really struggling. All in all fairly sucessful, just not near as many stories of deer we wish were closer.. I'm really hoping the dropping of antler restrictions isn't the beginning of the end of a great hunting area..
  7. Flat of my Jack knife against tree stand...they are very tough to kill the normal squeeze will not do.
  8. I hate them little buggers.. I have killed 2 sitting in my stand this morning crawling across my pants..makes me wonder how many I missed.. can't stop imagining them crawling on me now..I want to strip and che c k for ticks. but the guy in the other stand might wonder what's wrong with me.. .But then again , he might leave..hmmmmm
  9. I would, but I think I'm going to break out the ML tomorrow . . I'm in an Archery only section on the park now..
  10. Probably!!that's not you is it jeremy? lol Give me a wave
  11. You know what sucks.. ...when you leave a portable on state land, a spot that I have only ever seen 1 other hunter in4 years. I left it alone for a week. get there this morning to discover somebody has been sitting in it.. and another hunter and I can trade looks across a 60yd distance...That's public land.. The other fellow in the treestand probably didn't appreciate me walking past him to get in my stand either.... this isn't the 1st time this year somebody has been using my stand though... that slightly irks me...
  12. Deer are amazing animals, Barring infection . I think often they can recover from hits to the legs, shoulder, above the backbone, etc. I have seen 3 separate deer with boadheads in hip, shoulder, and middle back with (cartilage?) grown around it.none of these deer had any visible wounds or handicaps before being killed. Not sure what the actual survival rate is, but I would like to think it is fair to good. .. Imo.. Any shot that penetrates the body cavity is lethal 99%+ of the time.. Sometimes we like to think that they will survive , but this just is to make us feel better about a poor shot.
  13. Goos, as far as your question goes I would keep belt or rope for tree with the harness.. ... I am with lawdwaz though. If they are not climbing stands I would have lifelines on each with a prusik knot. I would think the biggest danger of falling is the ascent, descent , or transition onto and off of stand.
  14. We've been here since Tuesday afternoon. Not a lot of deer seen by the 4 of us. We must be mostly in the wrong spots because most people we have talked to have been seeing quite a few. Buddy shot a nice 10 though.. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  15. While there is a bit of truth to your statement , it is mostly bs. I know of quite a few families ,friends, etc. who voted on different sides of this election. . Many rational people can live, love, sleep, etc with those who have differing opinions.. to say they hate their spouse, friends or family is just foolish.
  16. I would be highly suspicious also . I've never seen anything arrow sticking out that far not fallout or break off within a few hundred feet. not sure how close the camisole to your line. Either way, odds are that deer will live on.
  17. Sorry , that sucks. By the way ,looking at the ground around your buggy, what the heck were you thinking?.. Lol.. you must be in your 20s still.. I haven't done that in a long time,.... Mmm. well there was that time last year.
  18. Exactly.. ;). but what else are we going to debate , while waiting for a deer to walk by..ha.ha.
  19. Not seeing very many deer.. starting to see a lot of scrapes though in 6a. More coyotes on trail camera in last few weeks than deer
  20. ncountry

    Rut!

Wow! I've gone 1/2 dozen seasons before without seeing that many bucks..lol Now that I hunt a couple weeks downstate I see many more. not sure if ever seen 14 in a day though .
  21. Fun little topic.rarely except for extremely steep and far shots will it effect our shots as hunters. Not a scientist , but pretend to know it all .;) I am fairly certain what has the most affect on our trajectory as bow hunters is the actual horizontal distance to the target , not the actual measured distance. this still is very small difference except for extreme circumstances. I think acceleration or deceleration from gravity would be pretty minimal in our circumstances.
  22. Excellent! though it sounds like th he arrow passed through the guts.. Be patient, wait 6 hours.. I know it's difficult. Too many deer are lost by tracking too soon.. Just checking the 1st 100 feet or so often leads to another 100 and ..and then a pushed deer and a lot of self kicking.
