Looks like a great time! I haven't been to Lows lake in years. Do you get a chance to do much fishing? Word is, that it is fantastic bass fishing . I think we camped near western end, on the part they call grass pond? We portaged from the western end 3.5 miles to the head waters of the Oswegatchie. You could catch native brookies as fast as you could re-hook a worm and toss them out.. yummmmmy..

I like the earn a buck program idea for high doe population areas. Doe only will not work, imo. If they changed the areas I hunt to doe only, I would most likely not go there to hunt anymore. I am almost always hunting for a nice buck. I just happen to take those gimme shots on does when they present themselves . . As a general rule I have taken more than 1 doe before a nice buck comes along. But without being able to take that buck would change the whole experience. As far as mzl in bow season, that sucks. It has been that way up here for years. effectively giving us a 2-3 week bow season. Once the banging starts the deer are much harder to hunt.. Unfortunately its very effective. Our deer numbers have still not recovered. And I am willing to bet that we will always have this muzzleloader season.

As I'm sitting here at the table I can hear the neiborhood start to make noise..Love it! Everybody gets together bringing any guns they own pistols, shotguns, rifles, etc. Target and skeet shooting.. It started with one neighbor and has spread to 3 or 4 spots within a few miles of me. It has become a local tradition. Is this statewide or just a local thing?

I'm definitely with you on the marketing of scent control products... IMO a waste of money for the most part..playing the wind will win over expensive products 9 out of 10 times.. Same goes for most camo.. Heck I wear it now admittedly because it looks cool..lol.. I haven't seen where I see more deer with it though..I'm sure I have killed more deer wearing jeans and a hoody.

Proficiency - How good do you think you are?
ncountry replied to RoadKill44's topic in General Chit Chat
I average around 290 shooting indoor... I would have to admit to being a lot better shooting at a target than at a deer..lol -
I don't know you from Adam, but I call bs... Either that or you don't see many deer..

Hunting Pressure on public land in northern NY state
ncountry replied to buckchaser's topic in Turkey Hunting
I'm not a turkey hunter, but I see very few hunters parked around public land during turkey season... Which piece of state land are you going to hunt? Friends who turkey hunt don't seem to have problems finding private land to hunt . Not so easy to find for deer.. -
Bah! You could plug 1/4 of the quarterbacks in the league on to the patriots team and have a great record.. Look at Matt Castle's year when Brady was out.. Except for this past year and maybe the previous you couldn't say that about Peyton's teams.. IMHO..

I agree with Trial..For around the same price, I shipped my bow to one of the best bow tuners /string builders out there and had the work done.

Anyone else scouting new ground during the off season?
ncountry replied to genesee_mohican's topic in Deer Hunting
Yeap.. I had this area all picked this past year. Wayy down and over and through the the thick..lol. So I spend an 1.5 hrs lugging my 40+ pounds of gear (stand,etc..) before daylight to this spot along the river.. Behold! a stand in that exact spot.... Not the 1st time I took my stand for a walk and never hooked it to a tree. Starting to get a reputation.... Still , I am counting the days until next year.. Cabin is booked. -

ncountry replied to genesee_mohican's topic in Deer Hunting
I have scouted a new piece of local state land. 6000+ acres.. So far the sign seems pretty promising.. Only negative I see so far is the proximity to some Amish farms..In my experience the deer don't seem to prosper in these areas.. The biggest problem I have with public property is that everyone reads the same books .lol.. Find the best pinch point /funnel/remote spot on a map and drag your butt all the way down there and discover a tree-stand in that exact spot..ha.. I have slowly been evolving .. Paying a lot more attention to "too obvious" easy spots, that everyone else walks right past and those spots that the deer escape to after everyone invades their honey hole.. I am still a sucker for the remote spot that requires a 2 mile hike and or rock scramble though..lol -
So, I did the next best thing , took a few pics as I was driving.. The pictures do not do justice to the scenes.. Looked like a crystal wonderland.. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk

Moron Wildlife Occupied Arrested
ncountry replied to Uptown Redneck's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
If a local farmer started grazing his cattle on local public lands and refused to remove them or pay the proper fees, I would likely be eating steak in between meals of venison.. -
Ha..ha..ha....lol Have we met? Edit...Now I see we are talking about someone else...
-
You are exactly right. To each his own.. When I bough my 300, a close friend who had hunted with the same caliber for 20+ years swore by his 165 gr loads with a tough bullet that always passed through. He thought I was foolish for shooting anything less. I thought he was foolish for shooting anything more than 150 gr..lol.. I have shot many deer with my set-up and they always hit the ground in sight ,doesn't matter if they are quartering towards ,away ,or straight at me,.. Cannot honestly think of one right now that actually didn't hit the ground practically on the spot with the 300(definitely overkill). When I used the 308 with 125gr loads they would occasionally run 30 yds..
-
In my experience, it seems to hit them harder. In my thoughts, it seems like a lot of energy is being wasted with a bullet passing through a deer and continuing to travel into the ground,etc....I have heard of, and witnessed once, where a tracking job split and led to 2 dead deer with one bullet. I think the perfect set-up would have the bullet falling out the other side ,lol, giving one a little easier tracking job if needed..I have always shot this set-up and have had no reason to change it so far..
-
While I hate to admit making a poor shot. I have an issue leading a moving deer properly and have gut shot a few.( with my 300 win ) None went over 10 yds,.. I am an advocate of shooting light bullets (for the cartridge). 125gr handloads in the 308 and 150gr in the 300. . Rarely have I gotten a pass through, but the deer received 100% of the energy and rarely ran off in need of tracking..

Thanks, that was the magic #
