all the birds i called for my nephew this weekend were with hens. but again they will only come to where they are comfortable. you can pull a whole flock to where you are if its where they want to go. lots of hard mast on ground right now so not feeding in fields, and woods are wide open turkey can see long way to find hen..no need to go into open area if hens are content feeding in woods... their preferences will change as the weeks progress as do their roost areas.
-
Scout the pipeline from a far.. birds will only go where they are comfortable. It may not be at top but 1/3 up or any other spot up the pipeline. Second problem ipipelines allow easy access. Turkeys may be getting pressured there from others besides you.
-
sounds like you need to get closer to where they are roosting.. i never do well in fields... try moving into the woods closer to where they roost.

Congrats!

i try to set up so a turkey cant see into an open woods or field until hes in range.. i never like using decoys seems to scare more that attract. hens may have saw your decoys and took gobbler away with them. next time you hut that spot set up where he was ..not the field... hes comfortable there and will come that far again.

ham and leeks, with potato soup. have acres and acres of them...
-
i would really hope to meet him/her.. its good to know a few people in higher places, even if just an employee...after all its not what you know but who....
-
i wouldnt call at all or go near where they are roosting if your sure they are roosting there.... i would observe from long range...turkeys do not like being disturbed and will leave an area if bumped .. try glassing the area you want to set up from 100yards away.. unless your on private property chances are someone else knows they are roosting there as well.. have a plan b. if someone gets in close to them and bumps them be prepared to perhaps hunt them in the field with them coming in quiet. if you want proof of roost area listen in the am for gobbling or use a locater call (owl hooter) or a walk thru the area looking for a tom's j shaped droppings under trees, scratching and drag (strut marks)

NY DEC: 2013 Deer Harvest Results are In

ar's are purely for hunter satisfaction not population control... -
You said you couldn't get your 835 to pattern? Was it a turkey model? Ported and jugged barrel? Or a regular 835 3.5in ? I have both and turkey loads pattern like crap out of the normal one..its made for duck and goose (lower velocity loads) they pattern great. The turkey model is almost to tight 50 yards with just copper plated ammo is normal.I would like to see how the new ex range shells work but can't find any.. how much can you really extend past 50...pellet weight and speed drop that I don't think at 60 or 70 would penetrate to kill a bird.

To do many of these ideas obr or eab, season would need to be significantly shortened and closed during rut, and you would have to pick what season and when you wanted to hunt. Personally deer hunting is great in ny and hasn't changed much in 26 years except for the better (except for sat opening) . I needed.four People on a doe permit, could only take. one Buck (if you filled your buck tag in bow you were done hunting for the year) doe tags are now plentiful 1sometimes 2 per applicant. I can use them in multiple seasons, bucks in general are bigger due to voluntarily passing of younger deer. Compound bows are legal as are release aids.,lighted pins, I don't know what the fuss is about.. oh you saw a guy take a big buck on TV? Do you know how much they hunt to get that. Buck? Or they are the only hunter on 400 acres? Hunter density is very high here.in ny. Your comparisons don't hold water for that overlooked fact alone...... -

One buck doesn't make sense..they had that not to long ago. Bow and muzzleloader hunter who buy their tags eearly and for a good price fought to get two buck limit. If you went to. One Buck then your bow muzzleloader stamp should be. 1 dollar. Since you already paid for your buck tag in big game. Loss of revenue for the state would be astronomical. Just think of interest lost on a reg season licence if you only bought your tag as each season came. I mean if you bought a bow tag and filled it why pay for regular gun or muzzleloader ?? Those that take. Buck do it by being in the woods a lot... its a fraction of overall take. I think if you need more doe taken in and area open season doe only and charg five dollars for it. Guys who want meat would apply and hunt. As long as hunting land is available. Take 9 f for example.... we keep buying state land in the adk's with few hunters hunting there. Why not buy 1200 acres in erie county? There is no state land there or give a tax credit to landowners who allow hunting in these high population areas?? Now I am limited to get my DMP in my area and second choice..if I could go again in a special season I would. You can't control deer numbers if you don't have access to the area for hunters!! -

Earn a buck would only work in suburban areas under special regulation. nys has 650,000 hunters... if people couldnt shoot a buck the loss of income would be to great. a loot of people just wont shoot a doe..period. dont compare nys to iowa, kansas, missouri,or ohio, whe have 4 or 5x the numbers of hunters they do. and hunter satisfaction is taken into account. manage your own property for what you want. i know i need to take 10 doe a year off my place to keep population level. if my neighbors take more i would take less... i know my resident bucks and try to take bucks in the top 1-5 of them. wanderers are fair game. the guys know the rules and we consistantly average 18-20 deer a year from just under 300 acres. the dec trys to manage large areas and it cannot be effectivly done unless its all state land. -
on the roost ..owl hooter, dog whistle .. to gobble...elk bugle, peacock call, crow call, hawk call

DEC numbers must be way off.. my town take was 199 deer. We took 18 deer just off my property..or 10% of town take?? buck take for my town was 100. we had 8 off just my property.... the managenment area had a take of 3.1 bucks per square mile. on a 1/4 square we took 8... if i include the neighbors north and south of me the take would be 13 buck per square mile (640 acres) Obiously their numbers are lacking ..tough to manage something if you dont have actual munbers to deal with... Perhaps mandatory checkin stations ?? -
finally got it home after renting an enclosed trailer

The beauty of it is you have the choice to hunt over bait or not.. a lot of states allow bait for deer as well. Its legal, but you as an individual get to make the choice yourself. I have hunted bear over bait in new Brunswick Canada. Its not like you see on you tube. The guide i used didnt use treestands but hunted off the ground 20 yards or less in many cases. I got a bear in new York off the ground while walking/driving deer . The bait allows you to see a lot more bear than you normally would. But up close and personal with a bear is exciting either way.. the only non- exciting hunt (if you could call it that) was for Russian boar in a fenced preserve.. that was like having fish in a barrel with almost no water... if I didn't win it I at a fund raiser i would of never of went on it

Taking my nephew and his cousin out this weekend. Should be good time though weather looks questionable.
-
70% if road hunter doesn'nt shoot it first....
-
I killed a buck that was 8.5.... was the toughest meat ever.. was so tough the ground was like chewing on rubber BB's 's . More big buck die of old age than we know of ..of that I'm certain.

i am using a 24 cell plate and dropping a seed every 2inches on 28 in rows....
-
yes. just buy a bag of sunflower seed for your birds.. i prefer the black oil as they have multiple heads... broadcast and disc in about an inch or so.. deer eat the heads when they are developing and seeds heads when ripe. turkey grouse songbirds and squirrels also love em.. nice thing with black if deer eat leader they will floer from side beanches below where cut off.
