  1. An old yeller ceramic pot, and maple/non slip dipped striker.
  2. Gone at 430 someone had to bump them out... heard quite a few gobbling this and i'm righton allegany -Catt border.Didn't see anyone else in the woods or hear a shot though.
  3. Well after being spotted by a few hens with the tom I wanted. I moved to a different area and called in a beard less adult tom. Full fan no visible beard...ugh... was 20-. 40yrds for an hour couldn't find a beard on it no matter how hard i looked.. was hoping it was just wet and stuck to its chest..but no deal. .... guess he'll be target one come fall. I thought maybe he just snapped it off in the snow/ice this winter but there is no sign he ever has one at all..spurs are visable so 3/4 plus i would guess...
  4. Two things stick out..1st ....you saw the bird silhouetted...toms prefer high ground.. I'd set up again but where you saw him. Not your original spot..if you see a bird there once it will be there again.2nd Heard four Gobble.. if they were together it was group of Jakes aggressive calling is in order(think of them as 5year old you need to keep their attention. If different birds they most likely had hens with them.. and they dragged them away. 3Rd. 430-500 hooting is too early in my experience..530-fly down (around 6) is much better time. Soft call at 1/4 to 6 to 6 as in tree.calls
  5. looks like something got ahold of her rear end... hard to say what
  6. birds gobbling off roost, henned up. sporatic when on ground.
  7. I don't think he liked your decoys.. I'd remove them and move 200yards in direction he headed parallel to him and set up and call
  8. Rushford, ishua valley courses are good about a 15-20 min drive.. check out rock city private park on rt16 worth the entrance fee.
  9. well i thought shooting a turkey this turkey season would be appropriate.
  10. The deer is called a last chance mount, (I forget the artist that designed it)it can be done for pedestals or walls , I have. two deer Done that way . I don't care for most common mounts but prefer very life-like ones.

  12. You can keep it. Its an antique mount..like antique ivory.
  13. Most bear in NY are accidental. To up your chances of even seeing one the Catskills are a good place to start. You need to find food sources as baiting in NY is illegal.
  14. Yes, many turkey are shot well after 8 and when henned up the toms are more receptive to calling after the hens leave to lay egg.. 830-1200 noon. My nephew got his bird at 845 this Past sunday. Later in am is also good when bad weather as turkeys will stay on roost longer up to 2-hrs past sunrise.
  15. I've seen it, several times, big red fox yelping like a hen stalking turkey, fortunately the coyote population by me is fairly low. I've also seen a hen in aerial combat protecting her poults from a red tail hawk. That was amazing..a hen flipping around in the air talons to feet with a hawk as poults ran for cover.even a hawk using cars on the expressway as cover for a rolling diving attack on mice and rabbits. Benefits of living on the land I hunt 24/7 ... lot of crazy stuff in the world.
  16. No decoys since 2000. Just use topography so when bird can see to where I am its in range. On an aside. I have a whole flock of them in the barn i should give away or sell....
  17. Cut leg at joint...not much meat on them. I drill the bone to get the marrow out. Postion And let dry then cap leg with a dab of hot glue and a piece of leather.
  18. (by my nephew ryan) My First Turkey! The first day of my hunt was starting to be a beautiful day. My uncle woke me up at 5:00 am and told me to get my camouflage on while he made me breakfast (pancakes, waffles and eggs). After breakfast we set out into the woods. We started along a path that led to another path that was taken on two sides by a thick forest and a large meadow. We found a good spot and sat there and waited and waited.turkeys were gobbling on the roost across the meadow from us. Around 7:00 after seeing that nothing was calling back to us or "the turkeys weren't talking" as my uncle said. We got up and walked straight through the meadow. We heard turkey's gobble where we just left. We started to make our way back over but there were 3 hunters coming up the hill that spooked the turkey , they saw us and they left. After that we walked a lot and arrived at a field where we could see two toms and a hen. We started to make our way over to them but we kicked up some deer. The deer almost trampled the turkeys as both the deer and turkeys left the field. We pursued the turkeys only to hear them crossing the road out of reach. We started walking up a hill back to my uncles house and came to the same path that started our journey. A heavy rain set in and made everything more difficult. We went back to the house and changed our clothes so we could go out to lunch. The second day was a lot shorter time on the actual hunting part. I was awakened at 4:30 am by my uncle. This time we didn't eat breakfast. Outside the air was chilling. We left the house at 5:10 am and departed to start our walk. Around quarter to six we reached our destination. It was here that a game of calling and response occurred. The game lasted for about 25 minutes when one of the Two toms started down the trail towards us. He was not within my effect range by about 10 yards.Right as i would of gotten a clear shot he spotted me putted and flew away! While doing this he let all the other turkeys within a 200 yard radius know I was there. We got up and he took me to an new area about 1/2 a mile away at about 8 am At some point we came across a corn field and there was a tom turkey in it. We called to it but it spooked and snuck back into the woods. We pursued it.in the direction it had headed While walking in quietly, i heard a gobble, we sat and called he would gobble back, after 15 min, I looked to my left and 50 yards away it was walking towards us. I got a clear shot at 40 yrds and took it! After it was dead I carried him back to the house where my uncle showed me how to gut and clean him.... (THIS WAS HIS LEAST FAVORITE PART lol) We called the DEC to report the harvest. In the aftermath I learned the importance of wildlife in the woodland ecosystem and what a huge step it is to take a creature's life. By Ryan Van Splunder
  19. i would as i said but i have had them here trapping turkey, monitoring fisher cams, measuring bear. and have run into them taking landowner workshops, they are just people and good frindships can be made
  20. yes, much better than snow, quite a few gobbling on roost and shutting up when with hens had good luck bringing in satalite toms and this one gobbled 4-5 times on way in..
  21. I've said it before crossbows are part of the Dec solution to population control..we as bow hunters tend to wait for a buck (I do it as well) by including and hopefully bringing in new hunters(crossovers from gun now really new) that tend to have if its brown its down mentality will hopefully decrease doe population. The big problem is the either sex tag. They should probably lose it and issue doe tags for those archers who wish to have them..this will help in setting true DMP numbers needed in an area.
  22. 9W. Toms with hens off roost, satalite birds will come to calling and are kicked out around 830 am. I do have at least 1 nesting already she been sitting on nest behind. barn. For 3 days now.
