  1. i tried them but deer population is just to high despite my attempts to lower it..3 acres sprouted wonderfully..at 4 inches high they were wiped out by the deer... ended up with 5 plants that actually made beans...
  2. i agree doc, gun hunters have been giving up/a lot of perks to bowhunters. especially in nys. you dont see gun hunting shows showing off big bucks every week in the numbers that the bow shows do.or eventhe specail season weapons like muzzloader and crossbow. as for nys the dec cares about total numbers taken.. not about trophys or age class. that is a predominantly bow hunters push.
  3. I stopped watching hunting shows in the early 90's , after they stopped being instructional (whitetail visions, quest hunting videos if you can find them are full of good tips) a few started that way early drury videos, primos, fitzgeralds, pererson vids as well. now its watch me shoot this big buck.. i'n my opinion is it the cause of the antler craze and removal from family and hunting values that were the traditional backbone of hunting. the animal was always secondary. now emphasis is placed on size of the rack and if you can kill a big buck every year.....
  4. I've seen turkeys nest well into July, warm dry weather is needed for a good hatch. Older birds will nest in thicker more suitable habitat than younger ones
  5. 4 wheelers are easiest to get rid of. 1 2x6 with 20 penny nails driven through them so they form an x placed on acess trails 10 yards apart, will peal a tire right off the rim. after they lose a few tires, and they tend to stay off. posted sign on the trail entering so theu cant say they didnt see it. an put them up inside the property line 20 yrds or so. mom n dad wont be buying new tires for long let alone towing them back to their houses..
  6. i look for quite awhile and ended up buying a savage in .22 and 30-06. best decision ever. used good luck you might just look for a single shot or bottom eject pump. and get safety reversed. I.M.O you won't go wrong with your own new savage.
  7. Try savage, they make all king of left handed bolts at a reasonable price. In lots of calibers. From .22 Too 30 cals. Not bad new and usually come as a scoped combo. Any gun shop can order you one.
  8. Give him an hour or two and move in direction he went a few hundred yards... if you miss and a lot of birds are present its just like a fall break.. they come back pretty good.
  9. On behalf of my nephew Ryan and myself (past his bed time for school now) i would like to congratulate all the contestants and their mentors your all winners!!! to the judges an everyone else involved i wish to say thank you! I know my nephew really appreciates it!.

    double!

I don't think my girlfriend would like that...she shoots as well though just doesn't hunt...
  12. Just seems buying with a land contract would be much easier than leasing. Hope you get to purchase it. Owning is the best way to improve a property....
  13. Very good, I see people lease a bit on this site, do you think you could secure a long term lease? 1 Year at a time seems to be a big hassle...
  14. thats another reason not to use dekes....lol

    double!

Had a friend ask me to take her turkey hunting, so we set out this am at 510. walked 200 yards and i gave an owl hoot, and had a bird anser about 75 yards away. we snuck in and set up 60 yards or so from the tom. tom. a hen started calling to our left and after 15 or so minutes of gobbling the bird pitched down and went toward the hen. a calling contest ensued for the next hour with several jakes and other hens joining the group 50 yards below us. finally the boss hen started to drag the tom away, but not before a jack came in range of her 20 guage gun at 12 yards... her aim was slightly off as she hit some brush in front of it and the bird managed to get airborne and landed in a tree. the other birds got quiet but we didnt move. after 5 min of watching the bird swaying on its roost limb, it dropped to the ground. i told her i stand up and see if it was dead. i could see it with its head up about 45 yards from us. asecond shot finished it. she had her first bird!!! as birds erupted from all around the flat and looking to my left i saw a jake standing in bewilderment about 50 yards from me. a quick shot from my 835 and the double was complete!
  16. If it broke off it will grow back. If tore off it prolly won't'. This bird didn't even have a twisted feather where bird should be. (That was with 8 power bino's)I just don't think it has one.i
  17. Naturally the hen goes to the tom. I would lose the dekes... not needed , but share look pretty on camera and they make good sponsors for TV shows... always try to set up so a small rise/trees is between you and where you expect tom to show about 30yards awayy is good so when the tom shows its in range.. it nice to see a tom fromm 300 yards away but he can see that far too.. no hen/hen movement why come in? But if he can hear but not see you then he has to himsself visable. Scratching in leaves is a great finisher..can't see so he closes distance.
  18. they make forms to fit any deer, there are several manufacturers that make forms, and a good taxidermist adjusts the form for the proper measurments of your deer/game. (perhaps legnthning the nose or shortning it). in general a straight on head doesnt look very lifelike and i know several taxidermists who do not like to do them. a slight turn is much more realistic. but it is your mount and should be done the way you want it, a full upright head strait is what you want he should acommodate you. or id look for a different taxidermist.
  19. if your in a fiel i wouldnt expect to see them till 8 or 9 if not later.
  20. If they were in a tree already..it most likely was other hunters walking in...
  21. If you know they roost in an area, or they are seen by reliable source, by all means set up. On rainy days I've seen birds sit it a tree quiet for hours and fly down way late. 8 Am or later.
