  1. here are two pics.. one is done true european, the other is know by american skull, or western mount
  2. you could go on a nice caribou hunt (allow 2 ) for that price... whitetails you can go anywhere a lot cheaper yourself on state land in many states...
  3. lots of deer not much size to them... but its a different style of hunting (a lot of spot n stalk) and the terrain is different. juts because there are lots of deer doesn't mean sucess.
  4. This set back reduction is to try and control deer in a rural area. many are now 3-5 acre lots, with many anti hunters living interspersed a reduction would allow someone to shoot off their back deck with a neighbor house less than 500' away (assuming the neighbor doesnt like hunting) it is a good sugesstion, (i know recovery is another issue) but a good doube lung on a deer is usually recovered in approximatly under 60 yards or 180 feet. 500' is a long way with a bow or crossbow, i would guess 70% of hunter cant accuratly judge 500' but can estimate 150' pretty accuratly.
  5. Nice american skull mount...but not a european.... the top pallet (where the upper teeth attached) is removed in a european. Good job cleaning it looks good!
  6. I have a not so poltically correct field and stream magazine from the 50's. in a large color lithograph on the back cover,,it reads Save yourr small game kill all feral cats!!! it really is a great lithograph. and a ferral animal cat or dog, should be put down, imo. a collar on an animal is a different story. my friend's son was attacked an bitten by a lage ferral cat last fall and at age 17 had to undergo rabies shots as he was able to kill the cat and have it tested. and it proved positive.
  7. then it was probable escapee or release and went wild... they revert very quickly.
  8. tillers really are for gardens and good ground... i put together plow and disk and drags for under 500 bucks.. tillers are much more than that..they arent used on big acreages as my food plotting has increased the use of my time comes into play plow and disc are much faster, and . i've seen more broken tines on tillers in my area and would never buy a used one.. a good field cultivator is another option over a plow... but discs work great for leveling out ruts in two tracks and although in new (fallow field ) you need to plow or spray and adjust the angle on discs to bite in i have found them much more useful overall. that being said in small tight areas a tiller can be backed up to the edge tighter than a plow, but my experiance is that game prefers a grassy brushy edge against a plot vs woods to food.... again if you think you'll only be on good ground and very small plots a tiller may work for you, but used equipment is much cheaper and sometimes free, or the value of scrap
  9. Glad you went with the 30-06. get some ammo and have some fun at the range!!
  10. Boar tastes awfully strong, can't imagine eating that... its why the testes are removed from domestic swine...
  11. no 500 cord, ive removed 1500 cord in last two years.. i have a large wooded property put together from several pieces the were hi-graded over the years.. i dont burn wood myself but needed the "junk trees" removed big wolf tress left for years.. 38 in or so on the stump hickory, ash, maple, hornbeam, beach.. some trees have 15 cord in them alone... i like a thick woods with a lot of diversity. i have one 30 acre section that was 80% ash.. that is almost being clear cut.. underneath it is a great growth of cherry and hardmaple that were being shaded out by the ash... I was lucky enough to find a local that only takes what i want and has been here going on 3 years cutting everyday, taking great care not to damage other trees.
  12. I'll take a disc over a tiller any day...much more versitile in different soils and soils can differ 20 yards apart in the same field, ny is rocky unless your in a riverbottom or in mucklands... tillers are ok in nice rock free garden. tines break on rocks and nothing like a good tangle of roots wrapped around it... tillers tend to really fluff the soil thus requiring rolling or firming it again for small seed or it will wash sink to deep. just my experiance and opinion. i run an 8ft disk up and down my logging roads and plant in clover periodically... 10x2000 foot or so...i'd be there for a week with a tiller. disc is much faster especially when getting into larger plots. my tractor is 35 hp. and pulls a 8 ft no problem. when buying look for heavy frame and greese fittings. the heavier the better.
  13. been strutting here for a few weeks now...
  14. I at least got 500 cord of firewood out of the woods this winter. Thankfully the guy doing it has worked on all but the of the coldest days.. the tops have provided food for deer all winter. I am guessing there is 2 more years of tsi still to do. Its really sad that a woods can get so hi-graded by loggers over the years.. hornbean up to 2 ft in diameter.dead beach, pignut hickory..ton of ash and soft maple have left. and it doesnt even look like anyhing has been cut... Fire wood orders have been so fast and furious that he cant get anything out to the landing to pile up for the wet weather we should be getting. hope it warms up so he can get a few days ahead on the skidding. Doesnt look like food plots will be ready to plant till end of may this year.. frost is in the ground so deep.
  15. 4 inches..hate weathermen.really wish someone could hold them accountable for scare mongering....
  16. i never use a bullet puller its easier and much safer to remove the nipple and either put in a grain or two of powder and replace nipple if in the field, or if its tar in there (very wet powder)... to replace nipple with a small piece of homade threaded pipe hooked up to the air compresser gun...
  17. well i got 2 inches on the ground.. and its about stopped. guessing maybe 4 inches total before this is over.
  18. I have used several vests over the years and have gone to a simple fanny pack and small shoulder bag. i carry less and seem to do better, walking several miles of ridges the less the better especially late season when that added vest layer really makes you hot and sweaty.
  19. I've never had much luck with decoys , but that being said i usually get my bird within 70 yards of its roost tree. they usually fly down and bang..not much need for a decoy... seems to be an open field/late morning tool. and they are SO... good looking for the tv hunting shows... learn where birds enter a field and set up close enough for a shot.. i look at them as something unnessary in most ny hunting areas.
  20. the crust on the snow really helped the birds this winter as did all the apples still hanging in the trees. had a good melt here and southern exposures melted to the ground. good flock out in the winter rye 3 gobbles 5 jakes and about 20 hens. deer here are still high in population over 50 in the rye every day... thats here 9w conditions may have differed where you are..
  21. fog, by me.. ocasional light rain.. wind at 10 mph... saying maybe snow by 1pm... at least the snow on the ground is melting fast.
  22. Won't be by me, looks like I'm too far south..rain and sleet...
  23. be careful they are protected..dec needs to tag it for you ..or you'll be in big trouble...
  24. cci stingers are my favorite hunting rounds. they make consistant rounds in all velocitys. never had a misfire with cci, cant say that with remington, federal, or winchester especially as of late...
