virgil
Maybe you should worry more about the 'tax dollars' that we could have been generating if the proposed 'soda tax' had been approved.
WNYBuckHunter
No, maybe I should worry about ALL of the wasteful things going on with our tax dollars, just as every American should. Maybe we wouldnt be in the mess we are in if we the people didnt allow the out of control spending to continue. Man, you have a very odd way of looking at things sometimes. virgil
Man, you have a very odd way of looking at things sometimes. That's your opinion. A sensible tax on a product that contributes to the obesity epidemic that could have generated revenue in order to offset the healthcare costs associated with obesity was shot down. A tax like that might have had multiple benefits- generate revenue and decrease soda consumption- similar to the taxes on cigarettes. If you're so worried about out of control spending, you should also worry about lost revenue opportunities. WNYBuckHunter
Or instead of raising taxes, just cut spending. Hmmmm. Which is better?
Elmo
Or instead of raising taxes, just cut spending. Hmmmm. Which is better? Maybe we just don't cover obesity related illnesses? Maybe that'll get people to naturally drink less than 16 ounces? WNYBuckHunter
Nah, just make it like car insurance like has been said already. Oh and stop adding taxes and cut spending.
Doc
I applaud the mayor's willingness to legislate what the general population is too stupid to do for themselves. Obesity is a huge epidemic and sugary drinks are one of the primary reasons for it. I see this as similar to the taxes and restrictions on cigarette purchases. Lol .... I just love those that champion the government's love affair with behavior modification of the masses. Some just can't get enough of it. They probably would have been supporters of any of history's more noteable dictators. It's pretty much the same mentality.
nyantler
Yes, partly because in my career I've worked with countless diabetics, chronic wound sufferers, and amputees whose health conditions are almost entirely due to these types of products. There is nothing wrong with sensible restrictions. Sensible like creating a law that bans jumbo soft drinks... LMAO... YEP.. thats time well spent on the important things.. you really have to start reading your posts before you click the post button... maybe he should ban only the soft drinks that hold a gun to those helpless individuals head and force themselves down their helpless throats.. those bastard soft drinks!!! Something really needed to be done about them.... I mean .. there isn't anything else happening in the city that can be as important as a pushy jumbo soft drink... you can't even walk by a convenient store without one trying to jump off the shelf into your mouth. virgil
nyantler, as your post demonstrates, some people are just not smart enough to make intelligent decisions and need laws to keep them from doing harm to themselves and dragging society down with them. I appreciate the love, but the rest of your post is nonsense. Another silly attempt to demonize anyone with a different opinion. I'm not trying to demonize anybody .... seriously. It's just that there are some here (yourself included) that simply love to see citizens controlled. You cannot give up freedoms fast enough. And it is difficult not to compare today's champions of that kind of thinking with the mentality of some of the more noteworthy historical believers in government public behavior modification. I'm sorry if that hit a sensitive spot but I do believe that your kind of mentality definitely has been over-played in this country for way too many decades and probably should not go unchallenged. virgil
Doc, you give yourself too much credit. You didn't hit a 'sensitive spot' because, as I said, i think your post and accusation are nonsense. You make a lot of assumptions regarding my thoughts- then, you again compare that assumption to 'historical believers in government public behavior modification'????? I do not believe in giving up 'freedoms' easily. However, I also don't believe in 'biting off one's nose to spite his face'. In this case, the general public is being asked to endure a very minor inconvenience for the greater good- not that big a deal.

virgil
Posted Today, 07:09 AM 'Sasquatch' At the risk of being laughed off of this site my interest in this topic got the best of me. Has anyone here ever seen a legit sighting while hunting in NY ? I've heard of sightings in the Whitehall area but I'm curious to see if there are any in the Catskill region. The above post from a guy that just accused me of 'blatant stupidity'. Now that's amusing. Edited September 20, 2012 by virgil

ants
I love to see liberals who hunt. Talk about conflicted. Your blatant stupidity amuses me Not conflicted at all. Just not narrow minded and short sighted either. Drinking too much soda might make some, not all but some, people fat and unhealthy. So the only solution is for the government to dictate how much soda a person can buy. A lot of people would call that very narrow minded and short sighted. Freedom virgil. Think about it . I can go into a restaurant, order five double cheese burgers, and six pounds of fries if I want, but I can't have more than a 16oz. soda with it. Someone tell me thats not freaking dumber than a whiffle ball helmet!!!
Culvercreek hunt club
we need some type of computerized blood monitor to add up all of our caloric intake subtract our calories burned in a day and charge us based on the unused calories. ...boy that has a 1984 tone to it...lol
Doewhacker
Funny Bloomberg wants to regulate soda but has no problem with the Government's near lack of oversight on what chemicals go into the foods we eat that make so many fat. They created the problem and want us to fix it. Government is what led us to this point of lethal obesity. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15051594 http://obrag.org/?p=3292 http://www.naturalnews.com/027606_corn_subsidies_HFCS.html "United States crop subsidies have long directed the course of food consumption patterns among Americans. When a crop like corn is subsidized by the government, food producers hone in on it for use in their products because it is cheap. In the case of corn, the crop is subsidized so heavily that it sells below the cost of production, leading to its excessive use as a sweetener in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)." Doewhacker
I swear this is the biggest non secret conspiracy ever and hardly any one cares. Damn Government makes us fat and wants us to all get in shape or pay taxes on what makes us fat that they subsidised to begin with. (This is a genralized statement, not directed at anyone here) Edited September 20, 2012 by Doewhacker
steve863
This is why I think NJ governor Chris Christie would make a great president. He could lead by example. He could say, "Hey look, the government made me fat, but it didn't stop me from becoming president". Did you hear that CA governor Jerry Brown challenged Christie to a 3 mile run and then to do some chin ups and push ups? Christie of course refused. I wonder if every one chin up that Christie would do could count as three, since he has three chins?? LOL

steve863
Even his kids are fat. I saw them at the convention when he made his speech. They were waving at him and you could see all the flab bouncing around under their arms while they waved. Man, they must stuff their faces silly at his house. His family would screw up all the 200 year old chairs and furniture with their heavy butts in the white house if he ever got elected.
