TheMiz54
Hey everyone my management plan for our new property has begun this past weekend. I drove from NOVA 5.5 hrs to our hunting camp in the town of Greenwood last Wednesday and our plan was to plant 50 Spruce trees, 11 Dunstan Chestnuts, 3 Apple, and 2 Pear trees. My dad and I planted all 50 spruce trees to start our screen on the two road frontage areas. The green line is the Spruce trees the blue lines are the two rows of fruit and chestnut trees. Chestnuts The day after we planted the spruce trees I got a nice little deer track in the soil. The previous owner used the 6 acre field for hay but its full of good clover and forage so we are gonna leave it in and maybe spray some herbicide after the first cut. After all the hard work this weekend it was time for me to get back to Virginia but I am hoping to get back up early June to see how everything is doing. I still have to get grow tubes for the trees and put protection around each one in the next few weeks. My Dad will be going down every week and checking on everything as well and putting mulch around all the trees.

SplitG2
if you want cheap tree protectors, try benmeadows.com. They sell rigid tree shelters pretty cheap.

TheMiz54
I thought I would bring this thread back 6 years later and show some progress on the tree growth. This spring I took down the protection around each tree and when I showed up to camp I had a few rubs so I had to add the tree tubes again and protect them.ISent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Zag
Nice, thanks for showing the progress. It looks as though they have come along really well. I would deff keep some sort of protection around the trees for at least a few more yrs. Do u remember where you ordered the chestnut trees? TheMiz54
I actually had got them from Walmart they are the Dunstan Chestnut from Chestnut Hill. They do a yearly shipment and post the stores where they send them to. I got mine in Hornell NY or maybe it was somewhere in PA. Can’t remember Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Tracy06
How often do you hunt the state land at the end of the road? I see they are logging the bottom side of it this year. I have hunted it quite a bit, realizing I knew where your camp is from the aerial photo of it.
TheMiz54
I go up and hunt it once or twice a year. The fields up top are usually planted in corn or beans. This year it’s beans and they have been tearing it up there. We also sometimes do a drive from the top down to our place and try and kick something up during gun season. Pygmy
Good job, Miz….However, you're wasting your time..Ain't no deer in Greenwood... I know because I lived in Whitesville for a couple of years....No deer there either, or turkeys...You might better go someplace like Long island...I hear there are lots of deer down there...

It's kinda hard to see but I let most of the field grow up but the pines are there. They are about 6 feet tall, some are shorter.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Biz, I actually missed a really nice 8 point last year cuz I got the buck fever. We've taken 5 does so far and its been a work in progress. I really want to thicken up the edges around the road frontage. I added 2 additional rows of spruce trees staggered so in about 20 years it should be a nice wall blocking the road. haha We also plan on planting about 20 more fruit and nut trees this coming spring and I always have to order at least 50 Norway Spruce trees.

Daveboone
How long did it take for you to get fruit on the chestnuts? I planted 8 about four or five years ago, and another Dunstan this past spring, none yet.

I always added fertilizer spikes around each tree in the spring. The last few years I started adding manure around each tree also.
