MACHINIST
I am thinking about trying a scope or red dot and wanted to hear some success or failures if you had any.

gfdeputy2
I used to run a scope on my shotgun for Turkey hunting but I do a lot of skeet shooting so it became a pain taking it on & off & resighting it in. Now I run HiViz TriViz sights on all my shotguns & Love them. they come with 3 or 4 different height front fiber optic beads so you can adjust the elevation & the back is adjustable for windage now I can leave this on for skeet as long as the target is in the sight it is going down Edited May 21, 2013 by gfdeputy2
WingNut
I use my 870 12 ga for both turkey and deer hunting. Last year I was using an EoTech 520 holographic sight. I loved in a the range, impressive accuracy. It cost me a nice 6 pointer when I forgot to turn it on. LMAO. It didn't last long...... Elmo
I use a holographic sight as well. I always turn it off and then turn it on when I'm about to shoot. I love it when it's on but I've also lost of lot of opportunities as well due to not remembering to turn it on. Not much of an issue when you spot and stalk or spot and wait but when something flies by unexpected or jumps out all of a sudden, you don't have time to turn it on. ants
I use to use a True Glo red dot. It worked OK but I kept thinking that the reflective coating on the front lens, would spook birds so I took it off and just use the fiber optics now. Water Rat
Never believed it to be necessary , as most shots I've taken were under 30 yards. However , I would recommend fiber optic sights as opposed to a single bead.
dbHunterNY
i use a burris speed bead. if something happens and it stops working you can still use the factory bead/sights. however, you can sight it in to fine tune your exact point of impact with different loads. Five Seasons
this is what's on my 835 http://www.opticsplanet.com/mueller-optical-1x22x-33mm-quick-shot-waterproof-red-dot-scope.html only issue is turning it off or on if you're trying to save the battery and don't want it to die on you during a hunt. It's the only con really, otherwise the dot adjusts to the light conditions and gives you several options for cross hairs.

MACHINIST
I have heard alot of complaint about the red dots being to dark for early morning shooting.I know the last time I hunted with one(10-12 years ago) thats the reason I switched to a scope, but I was hunting deer and I would assume red dots have changed a ton by now. Elmo
Most red dots today has a dial where you can control the intensity of the dot and well as the size and shape of it as well.
WNY Bowhunter
My dad has a Nikon Turkey Pro scope on his 11-87 Supermag. This is his first season using a scope and he loves it.
RangerClay
Most red dots today has a dial where you can control the intensity of the dot and well as the size and shape of it as well. Back in 1995 I bought a Simmons Pro Point red dot scope when the technology was new. Paid $240 for it back then. I had it on my 30-30 for a number of years then took it off for a scope. Just for grins and giggles I stuck that thing on my turkey gun to give it a try. It is awesome. I will never go back to just a plain barrel bead again. And yes, as Elmo mentioned, you can adjust the brightness for low light shooting.
Five Seasons
my mueller has an auto setting that works great. adjusts to the light conditions or you can manually adjust it.
Elmo
Here's a picture of my red dot on my Mossberg 500 taken during this winter at the end of the day as the sun is setting. As you can see, clearly visible. (the top right corner is chipped hence the discoloration)

MACHINIST
I am referring to low light gathering for early morning shots, not the rightness setting of the dot.I have to replace my scope on my deer rifle first and after that I will be getting a scope for my shotgun.y then I will have narrowed down a choice. TeeBugg
Ill probably pick up a red dot over the summer for my turkey gun....which also happens to be my deer gun lol. Odd as it may sound ive had good luck with the 30$ walmart special red dots. Just my opinion Edited May 23, 2013 by TeeBugg

Gottcha. I was given an old Mossberg 500 12 gauge that needs to be completely gone through, so Im going to build it into a turkey gun. Trying to make the optics decision myself.
