Sweeney Response Letter to me

I didn't send him an actual letter, just an email. Short version is that I told him I was upset that in CT, PA, and NJ I can hunt with my xbow, but not in my home state of NY. I didn't expect to hear back, but then got a letter a few days later in the mail.

XBOW for disabled only

those not physically challeged during rifle or muzzloader season

However if someone cannot physically use a cross bow should we allow them a rifle?

FWIW this is a quote from Sweeney

"I gave (crossbows) a chance. My concern is that the real agenda of certain people, including the DEC, is to put crossbows in the archery season," he said. "They are a superior weapon. They do not belong in the archery season. Crossbows and bow hunting are not compatible."

It would be interesting to know if he is actually a bowhunter who is involved in this because of his personal beliefs or just the spokesman for a group who got his attention.

Who knows, but either way grassroots lobbying such as sending emails sometimes does influence lawmakers. Its not always a show of hands, especially if a politician doesn't think it will effect his reelection. That's a good thing, because if it was always a show of hands and political correctness, we would have lost hunting a very long time ago...

Funny they (I say they because Id bet a fist full of cash that Sweeny didnt write this) forgot to include the part about the legislation being veto'ed because he tried to sneak the discontinuation of the special Columbus Day youth season in there. Sweeny is pure politician, and is in the back pocket of a certain organization. This is why its not a good idea for the politicians to be in charge of what the DEC should be regulating.

DEC already did the surveys, you can read about it in the 5 year deer management plan. They have said time and time again that each time they get responses from people on the subject, the vast majority are in support of crossbows. Email them, ask them yourself.

His constituency is Long Island, so I don't think the NY Bowhunter's Association could put him in their back pocket for political correctness. He probably agrees with their position or was influenced by a bigger organization with many down state members, such as the HSUS. Did anyone investigate whether the HSUS weighed in on this bill? In my interface with NY sportsman I have found they are generally unaware of how active the HSUS is in NY in regards to hunting legislation.

I didn't think I was arguing with him or his post was argumentive. I think we sportsmen, as a group, are very prone to tunnel vision and I just think something else is more likely than the scenario he is suggesting.

Another thing, there are no term limits in the NY legislature, we need to work with the senate and assembly chairs of the environmental conservation committees , that is Grisanti and Sweeney respectively. No term limits and I don't see them getting voted out or leaving their chairman status. Regardless of your stance on crossbows, we wont move ANY pro hunting legislation without the cooperation of Grisanti and Sweeney... I don't think it is wise nor time well spent in criticizing two we cant vote out and time is better spent building positive repore with them. But heck, if you guys in your thirties want to keep the tradition of complaining at "Federation Meetings" and reading and rereading the same things in the sporting magazines until you have grand children, have at it, many before you have done this until the day they died... Like I said, its a tradition. Meanwhile over the decades the antis continue to develop a more sophisticated conservation ethic...

Have you ever seen something the NYB has stood for that Sweeny doesnt vote for or support? I havent. Its pretty obvious.

I havent seen anything from HSUS on the issue.
