How do other hunters irritate you ?

Sometimes those quiet ones will surprise you with what's hanging on their wall.

Doc

I'll ruin the surprise now and tell you there's nothing impressive hanging on my wall lol.  But I probably look at the meat in my freezer and the knowledge that I am self-sufficient with more pride than I would when looking at antlers on the wall.

Holier than thou hunters irritate me.  The guys who turn up their noses at your spike because it's not a trophy.  I am a 20 year old college student.  I pay my own bills, rent, etc.  Part of the reason why I hunt is because the meat it gives me really helps cut down my food expenses so if a spike walks by me I harvest him.  I see no reason to be ashamed.  Not all of us want antlers on a wall some just want venison on the table and memories in the woods.  I work just as hard for my spike as they do for their 8 point yet they look at me with the same disdain they would give a poacher.

Lol ..... We do hear a lot of that, don't we? Everytime I hear someone declaring to the world how they hold out for this and hold out for that, I always wonder just what are they really trying to say. Is it really just another way of trying to convince the world that they are such a great hunter that they don't need to harvest those little bucks. Sometimes it does kind of have that ring to it, doesn't it? I feel much more comfortable around those that quietly set their own goals and challenges and don't spend a whole lot of time bragging to the world what those challenges and goals are. Sometimes those quiet ones will surprise you with what's hanging on their wall.

What irritates me are guys that give me crap for being selective in the bucks I shoot. Just because Im selective, doesnt mean Im "hollier than thou", and just because I dont agree with guys shooting small bucks doesnt mean Im going to tell them they shoudnt do it either. Well, unless they were hunting my land.

I try to hold out for bigger bucks, which is why I dont have that many under my belt. Its a personal choice and makes a challenging sport even more of a challenge to me. I also believe that if I shoot the little guys, I wont have a chance to shoot that monster if he walks by.  ;)

The only deer I have on my wall is a little 74 inch basket rack 8 point, my first buck. Hes a trophy to me.

I don't think anyone is doing that here. I haven't read anything negative about setting your own goals and challenges. In fact, I think that is exactly what Wildcats160 was suggesting should be afforded him.

However, as I mentioned, I have heard an awful lot of people who announce their standards in such a way that it sounds more like a criticism of those who for whatever reasons choose limits that are not quite as stringent. Personally, I consider hunting goals to be personal, and I can't think of a single reason why anyone other than myself would ever be interested in them.

Understand that there are those that would look at that 74" deer on your wall and immediately start telling you about how they don't shoot deer that small. They may start going on and on about how you should have passed on that deer for a year or maybe even two more to let him grow up. Then they might start in on how NYS needs a law to prevent deer that small from being harvested. If you can imagine how that would make you feel, then maybe you understand exactly what Wildcats160 and I are talking about.

WNYBuckHunter, I apologize if I offended you.  By having an open mind and not looking down on me for the deer I harvest you are showing me that you aren't one of the people I was talking about.  To each his own, words to live by.  I would love to hold out for larger deer, but with my situation, public land and an empty belly, I need to take what I can get.

By the way, what part of WNY are you in? I live in Albany now while I'm in school but I grew up in the Buffalo area.

No no no, I wasnt taking offense to your post, it just reminded me slightly of guys that DO give people crap for being picky. I have had a couple of guys that I used to hunt with tell me to never hunt with them again because I let a few fork horns and basket racks walk right by my stand.

As far as my little 8 on my wall, I wouldnt shoot that deer again, Id let him go. It was my first buck, I was just using it as an example that Im not a holier than thou type of guy just because Im selective now.  ;)

Wildcats, Im about 20 mins south of Rochester.

I have a beautifu 8 and a great 12 on my wall....and the two I am most proud of are the spike whick was my first and a small 5 that I tracked in fresh snow for about 5 miles up north in big state land ...caught up with him....made a great shot and got him out.....well out at 2 am in the morning....Set your own standards and live by them. Byt he way wild cat....I may be filling a few crop nusiance permits for a farmer...if he coughs them up...interested in some for the freezer?

Debated a long time whether to reply or let this sleeping dog lie... SplitG2 summed it up in a short sentence; unethical hunters. They give the other 95% of us hunters a black eye, make landowners raise an eyebrow and give anti-hunting factions fuel for their crusade. What we all learned in kindergarten about respect for others and treating them as we want to be treated appears to elude the unethical few. I respect any hunter's choice of weapon, hunting methods and what they expect to achieve. Have my own choices, but certainly respect others who have different preferences. To the 5%, please respect my private property, personal safety, the general image of an ethical hunter and refresh you knowledge of the DEC rules/regulations.

I hate the guy with the two way radios that set up so close to you that you can hear talking about every thing and nothing

Ha-ha .... I haven't had that happen yet. I don't know whether I would actually get mad or start laughing. :D

My son and I were using the 2-ways at his property in Italy Valley . WE had them on vibe and you only talked if the other person buzzed you back . It was to let the hunting partner know you were getting down or moving . We kept any calls short .

We would hear conversations from a group of 3 hunters (knew it was 3 by the call names) . They would contact each other every hour and talk for about 5 - 10 minutes . The conversations were nothing of importance , just BS . I always wondered if they ever shot any deer .....

A few years back , I was hunting with my sister in law on her property . We had a couple of guys ion adjacent properties that were hollaring back and forth across her property . I think they did it because she had kicked them off her property and they wanted to get even .

I guess to be a good hunter , I should have offered to escort one of them to the other side of the field rather than get get upset and comment about it ......... ::P ... ::)
