New Cell Phone-Straight Talk?

OK folks, thoughts and feelings on the Straight Talk deals from Walmart or Target.  My daughter is going to be making a switch and is looking at this.  She will need a phone and they appear to have a pretty good deal on them and their "plan" is IIRC $45/month for unlimited talk, text and data.

Seems like it beats the snot out of Verizon, ATT and Sprint plans??  The Straight Talk phones are either using ATT or Verizon so the cell service should be top notch??

Any Straight Talkers on here?? :)

I used to have straight talk, but switched to Pageplus.I pay $29.95 a month for 1200 minutes, 3000 texts, and 500 MB data. Family has Iphone 5s on Pageplus. Also if you look on Straight Talk the Data is unlimited but with a catch. You get 3GB oh high speed and then after that its throttled down. here is also Cricket which runs on AT&T for $35 a month unlimited everything again with throttle data after a certain amount.

You can switch almost any Verizon phone over to Pageplus or straight talk. I bought my Iphones 5s off Craigslist and put them on Pageplus, but could put them on Straight talk, you just need to order a sims card. You can go to Straight Talk or Pageplus website and check your current phone to see if it will work on their network.

Do you need to supply your own phone? That often makes a difference in cost. I think there is a bit of a push on price wars, which is unexpected since the cost of data goes up due to the demand vs. supply.

Yes she does need a new phone.  They will of course sell you one and they would also take her Iphone 4 in trade.

Ive been wondering how good those phones are in the country my plan is finally up on my Sprint plan and I hate sprint service

They (the better ones I think) are either AT&T or Verizon, you buy the one you want and the service should (SHOULD) be as good as those two companies??

I'd sure look into it depending on your needs.

Never heard of Pageplus.  How is their coverage?

I need to ask the Little Princess ( :D ) how much data she uses now on her Virgin Mobile plan.  I know she probably sends a million texts a month but talks little.  The big question now is how much data does she consume??

My portion of the contract is up in May. I'll be looking to start moving plans then. Our family plan pricing sucks and work is getting rid of reimbursements for it. Use to have my internet paid for and my cell phone...what next? I feel like that guy who has to move his office to the basement at work, lol. Have you seen my stapler?

Let us know how she makes out Law. Don't know anyone on Smart Talk.

Lawdwaz Pageplus is prepaid, they have lots of different plans. PagePlus runs off Verizon Towers. The $29.95 plan I used the break down is 20 hours talk, 3000 texts (you would need to send almost 100 texts a day to use them all, then 500 MB data. The data part I use almost all of it or all of it. I try and use Wifi as much as I can.One thing alot of people do not know is if you use a Iphone is they send messages as a IMessage which uses data not texting. You can turn Imessenger off. I switched from Verizon and was paying almost $200 a month and only 2 of the 3 lines had data. Now I have 3 Iphones -5S with Data for $90 a month for all three phones. Also the $29.95 has no tax as you can buy them online.

Thanks, that helps.

She will need more that 500MB of data but 3GB is PLENTY she has told me.

My daughter and son are on different plans from my wife & I.  I pay approx $125/month for unlimited text, talk and 300MB(I just had to check my bill as I didn't remember how much data) on a flip phone and an Iphone 5. Damn and I getting hosed....................that sure isn't much data??

After we get the Princess squared away, I'll look at mine and make so over due changes.

  • 1 month later...

I have used straight talk for about 3 years now. I switched my verizon phone over.  They send you a new sim card and away you go. I have it set up so they take their money directly from my checking.  Same service same texts same data for a lot less than I was paying verizon.  Now for 47 or so with tax, I am getting more than I was at 80 plus with verizon.  I would highly recommend them.

Had Straight Talk for well over 2 years. Their $35 + taxes a month plan.  Worked great, no dead spots, great Samsung phone. Make a long story short, hot tubbed the phone, went and bought a new one at  Walmart.  Wanted a Verizon, sold me a no coverage T Mobil.  Went back and I give the clerk a  customer from hell, bad day, LOL.  Straight Talk should label the package what server they use. Been with Verizon ever since. I don't really blame Straight Talk, I just needed a phone

Oh and Verizon couldn't transfer my old number from Straight Talk. Verizon said once you're with Straight Talk and want to transfer to them, you lose your old number. That really hurt.

I was in a Walmart in Cicero yesterday with a friend looking at Straight Talk. Phones are labeled as either working on Verizon or AT&T networks. $45/month for service or prepay options for up to a year with good discounts. Anyone staying with a contract carrier with is giving away money for no additional service unless you are using your phone as a streaming hotspot.

Look into Consumer Cellular, my wife and i have our phones through them and we pay $39/mo. for both phones with 500 min/mo phone, phone to phone is no charge, I pay $ 5/mo extra for 500 texts/mo, and if i get an i phone or similar then data is the same as texts. Things get a little complicated with data plans only because I don't have an i phone and am not sure how it all works. You can buy one of their phones or use your own phone you just need them to send you a sim card. I would be very interested to see if anyone here has CC and what they think, but as for me I have been very satisfied with them and the coverage is great.

I stand corrected, I just checked my last bill and with taxes we pay $46/mo. and get 600 minutes/mo. phone (phone to phone is free), and we get 1000 texts/mo. and or 100 mb of data/mo. I don't use the data so I don't know if it's a good deal or not. We are looking into getting new phones as they are so old they need to be replaced.

Four years ago, Straight Talk didn't identify which carrier they used on the box. The sales associates should of known.
