NYhuntingdogs
Hey, I've been seeing this deer today out my window. Looks to be a female with a broken front leg. She's been staying in a small area with half-a$$ cover, moving back and forth. Feeding a tiny bit but more alert and scared than anything else. Is there anything I can/should do? Thanks. Dom
First call Dec and report/maybe they will come and help or u could do what is the way of the land.Shoot and eat her
defrazzle
Unfortunately there is really nothing you can do to help this deer. Are you sure the leg is broken? Do you see any signs of a compound fracture? If you think the deer is suffering, you can call DEC and they may dispatch it. Hope you find the right thing to do. NYhuntingdogs
Dom, I agree with you but I don't live in the country. Too much sneaking around and law-breaking. Frazzle- The deer is walking on three legs and won't put any pressure on the one. It is carrying the affected leg clear of the ground as best it can. wooly
Leave her be would be my suggestion.

NYhuntingdogs
I'm not. I'm gonna do what wooly said. We'll see what happens.
sbuff
Let mother nature handle it. I have a doe in my yard with broken rear leg since September...they can survive on three legs...
NFA-ADK
A predator might have chased her. I think they know predators do not like human contact. It could explain her anxiousness and staying by the house. Good luck! Edited February 15, 2015 by NFA-ADK
wolc123
3 legs hardly even slows them down. I can run faster on two however. If she looses another she is in trouble.
nyantler
Leave her be.. the coyotes need to eat too.
dbHunterNY
yea DEC probably can't be responding to those types of calls, despite you calling it in. like the others said let mother nature deal with it. she may live for years or the coyotes will get her. NYbuck50
Id leave her be, maybe with the deep snow, put some corn in a bucket in the backyard( for the squirrels bc feeding deer is illegal)
genesee_mohican
They are pretty tough animals. They look odd hobbling, but they sure can run well on 3 legs. A few winters back I was seeing a 3 legged doe from time to time. She looked kind of pitiful on three legs. She had twins with her the following spring and did that for a few years till she went off the radar.
nyantler
What would be the reason for calling the DEC about a deer with a bad leg...? I just don't get that.
cityboy
I had a deer with a busted up rear leg hide on my back acre for at least 3 years in a row. She produced a couple of fawns too!
NYhuntingdogs
If they were going to shoot her and let me keep her, I think. Still waiting to see them again. Her track is very distinctive but I haven't bothered them.
nyantler
The DEC doesn't just shoot animals that have bad legs and give them away... nor should they... mother nature can handle things quite well on her own. Unless she becomes a problem of course for the public then that is a different situation.
NYhuntingdogs
That's why I didn't call...
