My old school.mascot was recently voted out by a school.board as being racist after 68 years. The residents were by passed in any decision making process.

those that want the change claim it is racist and is always racist!

Those that want to keep.it point out it has never been used as a slur or in a derogatory way and is in fact always associated with the local scholastic and sports teams. And has only.been loved cherished and many have said it instills the value of pride tradition and excellence.

I have spoken to some native American I know and they do not think it is racist.I have tried to.hear why it is racist from the group.led.by mr Kane and there response is that it is and always is.

many things offend many people.for.different reasons, but to make a word only be racist is like saying guns kill people to me. I understand a name.is a just a name, as grandpa use to say sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.

Lol .... I am of the opinion that one of America's most popular pastimes today is being offended. We just sit around and think of as many things as possible that we can claim offense at, and for some reason that brings joy. Most likely a result of not having enough useful things to do.

Does that include those that are "offended" by "political correctness"?

Would have loved to see the school board stand up and tell the protestors to shove it, we're not changing a thing, and walk out of the auditorium. The world is on fire, the "JV" team is warming up in the bullpen and people worry about silly things. It's just a nickname.

 

Oh yes, and there's ESPN covering Obamas NCAA picks. Unbelievable. OK..rant over...going back to bed...

...and furthermore, down the road from where I live, Salamanca High School, situated within the bounds of the Cattaraugus Indian reservation, has "Warriors" as a nickname for their sports teams....haven't heard a peep about the nickname...Where's the outrage? where's the snooze coverage???I'm confused...Maybe Salamanca should just change the sports team nickname to the "Gamblers" in honor of the Casino just around the corner...just sayin'.

My old hs changed its name too. We were the chinks. They caved cause it was a "slur". Whats wrong with people. Nobody was offended by the name chinks. I found it to be an honor to orientals. Smh

My old schools team name used to be the "Holland Raiders".

Real cool black and grey uniforms complete with skull and crossbones just like the Oakland Raiders.

They did the name change deal and came up with the "Holland Dutchman".

Now they have a wooden shoe, or a tulip, or a windmill as their mascot, on a gay purple and yellow jersey.

I'll bet a true "Dutch-man" would be offended by this if he ever saw them play, but they needed to keep all the Pirates in town happy,lol! :paladin:

Yeah.  I said it on another post that I understand why the name "redskin" is being changed.  I wouldnt want to be called the "Yellowskins".  Or the NY Whops.  The Chicago Colored Boys.  Its their word/culture.  If native americans take that word as a slur, then it's a slur.  end of story.  The moniker "warriors" isnt offensive.  Comparing the two doesnt match up in my opinion.  Thats just my take on the matter.  Im Italian.  If a school was called whops, ginnys, degos, greaseballs, mobsters, I would be like change that sh*t.  And if a Native American told me "well, its not a slur.  It's a term of endearment" my response would be, "Im Italian, not you.  Dont tell me whats a slur and whats not a slur to me".   Same as what they are doing.

yes but when there isn't concensus among them and it's the mascot that bothers some,which they use to sell their own good, and the word is attached to a name that in 68 years has only refererd to a scholastic sports collective in any news or.media article, just affixing a word is a slur is like wanting to remove nigger from Tom Sawyer, or huckleberry finn. What I'd nudity is offensive to some do we paint over masters art or clothes sculptures. Even simple words can be slurs, look at a young black man and yell BOY get over here and see what happens.

This group wants every name affiliated with indians removed, chiefs,warriors braves,raiders, ect.

Enough is enough, taking words out of context and banning them or using them yourself when they are offensive to you is about as unintelligent as it can be.

calling someone a Penis is very different than discussing it in a medical class or sex ed. But it can offend some oNe?

Do all words have just 1 meaning and that's it? Gay has several meanings and has evolved to the latest use as in th@that was gay ( meaning dumb or stupid)

If I said the redskins are playing the wildcats do you think it means native americans are playing with feral cats? Or do you think it's 2 sports teams playing each other? It's seems basic english skill are pushed aside and context is forgotton so an agenda can be enforced.

Yes a small group.from.outside insists that the name is offensive and should.be removed as it always refers to native americans, so I guess the sentence the redskins are playing with the wildcats this Friday can only mean native americans are playing with feral cats this friday, using their logic...

I see what your saying.  Not sure if im wrong or not, but im pretty sure the nfl team is making money of redskins, not any natives.  I never seen a native american selling or profiting off anything with the word redskin affixed to it.  maybe im wrong, but thats my observation.  Your examples about art work containing nudity and body parts being taught in science, I dont feel relate to this topic.  Im not sure how someone could take the word "penis" in bio class as a slur or offensive.  It is a scientific word.  I do see the point your trying to make about where do we draw the line, but I think those examples were taken to the extreme. 

 

There are leaders from several tribes saying they dont like the name.  It is a slur.  I dont understand why people who arent Native American find it appauling that they dont like it.  I dont know what your heritage is, but I can assume you wouldnt want any type of derogotory name about your heritage celibrated.   If someone told me that my school would be the Whops, Id tell them to go shove it.

Cool nickname. Not insulting to me. As mentioned in an earlier post, Native Americans coined the phrase "Redskins" , so I see no problem. Holland school was made to change from Raiders to Dutchmen? Someone better tell the Oakland Raiders and The Washington Redskins to get on the stick and institute some change here. Only 193 days left 'til deer season...

I still think the right course of action was to not change the name and change the mascot.  Just change the mascot to a potato and it's over. Have the potato like a Mr, potato head and him kind of bending over with his lips strategically placed on his butt in a caring but KISS OFF gesture.

Can't do that...there will be a "million potato head" march in DC to protest...
