Should I buy a 270

the answer is Yes, to any gun purchase, and I can't see any set of conditions that should have a "no" response.

Already have a .270? - Buy another one

Want to shoot a specific range / game animal? - Buy one anyway, then get another caliber

Wife aggro over spending? - Buy the .270 and duck

small game rifle? - buy a .270, and a .22

Guns don't go bad, you'll find something to hunt with it!

If you want the .270 just to have another gun then I guess you should get it.  If you want it to hunt with, then it doesn't make sense since you already have a .30-06.  The NY gun season is a few weeks long but how many times do most of get out to hunt?  Probably not too many days in total, so honestly it will serve little purpose having a .270 since you already have an .06.  In my opinion it's best to hunt with one gun instead of picking up a different one each time out.

Nothing wrong with having a back up rifle on hand, even though the odds of needing it are very low.  But it still begs the question, why have another rifle that is the same, or similar to the first one when you can have more versatility in your rifle battery?

Sell the 30-06. Buy the 270 and a 300 short mag. Now you have the best of both worlds. i have many rifles in different calibers but I always seem to reach for the 270 when I open the gun cabinet.

Same here the Sako .270 for deer,  then the Tikka .223 WoodChuck and Yotes and of coarse the .22WMR the pest of the world,

Why sell the 30-06 you can buy ammo from 110 grain to 220 grain for it . my old BDL I used for woodchucks to black bear. and dropped them all.

I did recently buy a Sako in .243 and another Sako in 30 - 06 , should have everything covered.

This is gun control. If some one wants to or would like to purchase another firearm why discourage them? What does it matter that a 30-06 is already at hand and this person would like to have a 270.The ? was should I purchase the said rifle. My answer is yes

I have Ruger M77's in .30/06 and .22/250 and they make a very good pair, covering everything from woodchucks to moose. If I was limited to a single gun, a .270 would be a better fit, as I don't hunt the big stuff too often. I don't ever see a need for a rifle bigger than a .30/06 in my future, so my next rifle will likely be a .243, which will give me a finer adjustment in the fairly broad range I already cover. When it comes to similarity in performance, you cant get much closer than a .30/06 and a .270. The good thing is, you will have whitetail deer covered extremely well with that pair, if that is your primary quarry. A .243 would be a better pick for you, or even a .22/250 or .223, as a second gun, if you also go after the smaller stuff. If you see elk, moose, or grizzlies in the future, then a .300 mag would be the way to go for your second gun. One of my hunting partners loves his .270, and I sometimes ask him for a couple spare rounds when I am low on 06 ammo. Those smaller bullets will still fire in an .06, as the cases are the same, but I wouldn't recommend it. Obviously you cant go the other way and squeeze the .30 cal bullets down the .270 cal bore.

Biz...I agree that the Weatherby mags excell at shooting flat at long range...That is what they are designed for...

However, in order to do that they burn a LOT of powder compared to conventional chamberings and the ammo costs a LOT of money, especially if you are not a handloader.

They just are not as practical a choice as a hunting rifle for Joe Average Hunter as perhaps, a .270 win or a 30-06, and for MOST hunters the long range advantages that they offer are not necessary.

Or even applicable, as the average hunter and shooter does not have the skill set to accurately hit targets at 500 yards or more, especially under field conditions.

Let's not derail this post any further.I know and many others do also that there is a group of great marksmen on this site. With that a 270 is very accurate to 1000yrds with the best shooters.

You aren't kidding there! I once fired my .270 at a 10 X 4 foot piece of plywood at 1000 yards and damned if I didn't hit it. I was about 4 feet low and 2 1/2 feet to the right of the bullseye, but I connected. And this was with open sights. My next two shots I could not even find on the plywood. They must have gone thru the same hole as the first. Now that's accuracy for sure!!!

Maybe not as stupid as you imagine, if your life depended on it. If you had a hungry bear after you, would you rather have a 30/06 rifle and a couple .270 rounds or a 270 rifle and a couple 30/06 rounds? Fortunately, I haven't tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work in a pinch.

The .270 cartridge will shoot out of a .30-06 but you can see the bullet in flight.

There is something to be said for switching it up though. I agree that I'd rather be good with one gun, but I enjoy mz season. Mostly because it's the same deer and weather as the end of fun season, but I feel like I'm doing something new and get a little more excited.
