Help on reading a shot

Hey guys,

Last night I got lucky and had an absolute monster 10 point walk out at 5. The only shot I could take was a quick right shot in a lane before he hit thick cover. Upon releasing the arrow I thought I saw it go low and back kind of in the gut/liver area (wasn't happy about that). Anyway I gave him time went down and found my arrow completely greased from top to fletchings in heavy fat and a light pink chunk of what looked to be organ on the ground with blood. Other than that no blood and he ran into the thickest stuff imaginable. My buddy who had a similar expierence said that with a buck that big the fat could've plugged the hole like his did last year. I estimate the live weight to be right around 200. We did see the six pointer he was with bust out of the cover they ran into about an hour and a half later by himself. Bringing in a dog this afternoon after work but looking for opinions and thoughts. I haven't been able to think of anything since it's killing me to think I may have wounded the animal.

If it were me, and I shot it at 5 last night, I would be out there right now, my main concern would be the loss of meat if it lays there all day............12+ hours is usually enough time for a deer that's going to die, to die......too little info to make an educated guess, but I'll go with low brisket or stomach area.

I really wanted to be out there now but with couldn't with work. They wouldn't let me come in late but I'm only working until 11 and running home, makes it tough cause I leave my house at 430 in the morning for work.

I think you'll find him in that thick stuff. Great move not pushing him.

Well stay at it and don't give up yet! My guess would be brisket. Have you ever shot your bow at 5yds I bet it shoots a lot lower than you think.

Thanks last thing I wanted to do is chase him into people's yards don't need that headache. Sorry meeant 25 yards

Good luck hookhunter.  I have had organ pieces fall out of deer when using rage and have the hole plugged by other internals.  All were dead and did not go far.  You gave it time.  Be persistent and you will find him.

Did the arrow smell like gut? Also a LOT of fat around the kidney area as well, but that's higher up. Since you did not push him, you may find him dead in that thicket. The dogs do very well on paunch hits most times. Even when there is no blood to follow. Good luck for a quick recovery.

good luck i have heard that a gut shot deer is the easiest to follow for a dog so I hope that was the case! hope you get him

not to derail, but that's a good picture to show how far forward you can actually aim....I think most aim too far back, as I used to do prior to getting a better understanding of the anatomy....probably worth starting a new thread with that pic.

That is an awesome picture. I've been shooting further back than needed all along apperentky. Going of that I would think it hit between the stomach and liver. Maybe the diaphragm too

If you hit stomach or liver, and did not push him, I'm confident that you will find him dead in that thicket.

Definitely in the stomach the more I think of it. Not a great shot but I feel more at ease that I will find him thanks for the input and help guys. That picture was awesome, I'll keep you posted on the recovery effort

did you attempt to track him at all last night or did you just back out and leave him alone?

We looked for blood at the entrance of the thicket didn't want to push to far in and bump him up. We heard him running in at first after the shot and then nothing no crash no sound of running almost like he stopped and bedded right there or came to a walk

Thanks got stuck at work longer than I thought, my dad and his friend brought the dog out they're walking out now. Hoping for the best
