BKhunter
I have a ruger 22 which is one of my favorite guns. It's a nice wood stock with a stainless steel barrel and receiver. I don't like taking it hunting for the sole fact I don't want to ding it and scratch it up. If you have to buy a 22 for its sole purpose to be a work horse hunting gun which one would you recommend? Marion
If you're worried about dings and scratches get another 10/22 but in a synthetic stock You Can't Beat My Meat!
philoshop
Synthetic stocks will go for well under $50 bucks on ebay, last time I was looking. With that and a decent case to prevent 'transport rash', I wouldn't worry too much about the barrel and action.
kpkot
That's like buying a truck and not using it as a truck. All my guns are work horse type guns. They look very pretty out of box, but soon have dings, scratches, and character.
Elmo
I use a Ruger 10/22 in synthetic stock as my workhorse 22 so I have to agree with everyone else so far. My bro uses the Marlin XT-22 and has been real happy with it.
Skillet
What's your price range? A RUGER 77/22 All weather, is about as tough and accurate as a 22 can be. Black synthetic & stainless. Pricey, but an awesome rifle. 2nd choice: stainless / synthetic 10:
ATbuckhunter
I would say get another 10/
grampy
The 10-22 was made to be a workhorse hunting gun. I don't have any case queens. All my guns get used for what they were intended. Every scratch and ding tells a story. Wouldn't have it any other way.
Taylormike
I would use your current gun. 1022 is one awesome gun. I have Ruger camo synthetic with scope and shoulder strap, great gun! Edited December 16, 2015 by Taylormike
Buckmaster7600
Ruger 10/22 they are hard to beat and you can't have too many of them. Just last week I was in a shop and they had a full camo 10/22 and for whatever reason I needed it, now I have 4
ants
I have 3 10/22's. 2 in LR and 1 in 22 mag. great little rifles. Never a single problem with one of them and one is around 30 years old. I agree with the suggestion of getting a plain Jane 10/22 to drag through the woods. Maybe try to find a used one that is already dinged up. Buckmaster7600
Guys what is effective range can kill squirrels with .22lr? They will kill farther than you you can accurately shoot.
Taylormike
Well that's good to know. Time to start squirrel hunting.
Elmo
When I first started hunting, I've zeroed my 22LR out to 100 yards and have taken squirrel that far. Of course I also missed a bunch of head shots that were much closer. I've since changed the zero to 50 yards and that will still maintain accuracy out to 75 yards before I notice some drop off. Zem18
My first .22 was a Mossberg 702 Plinkster. I swore I would never own a Mossberg but I bought one and am happy with it. Mine is a synthetic stock with stainless barrel. It has a hooded or halo front sight and adjustable rear sight. The hooded sight is great and there is no need for a scope. I did put a 4x scope on mine awhile after I owned it and can hit targets at 100yds consistently. Great value at a good price. Gander has them for $169 for the same as mine and $150 with the blued barrel. Cabelas sells a 3 pack of magazines for $60 for it too. http://m.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?r=view&i=416019 Edited December 17, 2015 by Zem18
Hock3y24
I'm a sucker for bolt action 22s for hunting, I used my Remington 582 today and got a couple grays.
Jaeger
BKhunter, just so we know is it a 10/22 or a 77/22? There are a lot of accessories for one and not so much for the other. And both come in many variations if your interested in the same style but more of a work horse.
BKhunter
most looking for a 10/22 never really considered the 77/22 until a poster put it in my head lol.......Most likely going to go with the 10/22 and I think a ruger as I do love the one I have. I am just looking for one that I can beat on and not worry about. Still deciding if I want to put a scope on or leave it with iron sites.
