Paula
Today I seen what I would call a black fox. I look it was and the pictures were very black. So I am thinking it was just a dark brown fox. Am I crazy?
Paula
One of you could have at least told me I wasn't crazy!

Steve D
You are not crazy.....They are rare but they are out there..... here is one that was shot during a state wide coyote/fox contest in Jan. I believe it was shot up north. Edited March 30, 2016 by Steve D

DirtTime
Thanks Rob. Lol You asked for someone to call you crazy. I obliged. All the red fox's I have seen were about the same. I can't recall if they were darker from one to another. I have seen a coupe silvers that were very white though.
BizCT
That black one is awesome. Cross fox up in Canada area really cool too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rick Howard
There are different color phases but most are subtle but sometimes you will see something extreme. The silver fox at the contest was pretty cool to see. Out of nearly 20 years of calling fox and coyote that was the first I have ever seen. G-Man
It's a color phase, some are rarer than others.. your not crazy . I'll have to look through some old trapping photos I have and show some of the wierd colors o caught I n the 80's. ... boy those were good times 35 for a fox and 70 for color phases.. wish prices would come back up I'd trap again
Curmudgeon
Paula - If you are crazy, it has nothing to do with the fox. According to my old Peterson Field Guide, Mammals, a black phase exists. I am jealous. I've never seen one.

Pygmy
Very cool, Paula... I have seen black-phase foxes in Alaska and northern Quebec, but have never seen one here in NY.
Paula
I just wish it hadn't moved so quick. I am hoping to see it again because it was laying down so I figure it was comfy. It was on beagle club property

wooly
I thought grey fox would have been the #1 answer on the board, but we do like to think to extremes!

airedale
A long time ago I was big into Coon hunting and competition nite hunts with Coon Hounds, I worked hard on keeping my dogs straight on Coon. I would break them from running any off game like Deer, Rabbits and Fox. Anyhow I purchased a silver phase Red Fox kit from an animal dealer to use for breaking my dogs. Silvers are basically black with some of the guard hair having white tips. Below is my little fox kit whom I named Roxy and one of my best English Coon Hounds Eli. Roxy grew up to be a beautiful fox especially in the winter when her coat was at it's best. So yes there are black Foxes. Al
BizCT
Also I'm pretty sure all red fox are near black when born. I remember watching several young ones leaving under my parents shed and they were all black till they got older.
