Pygmy
I planted an acre this morning.....75 pounds of seed, 150 pounds of 15-15-15...Broadcast the seed and fertilizer with my buddy's ATV broadcaster and then did a light discing to work it in.. I am currently praying for rain for prompt germination... IF we get some rain soon, and IF we get a "reasonable" amount of rain, and IF we don't get an early frost, I may have mature grain by the end of September. Other wise, I still hope to have enough high nutrition greens to benefit the deer, plus improving the soil in that plot for whatever I decide to plant there next year.

moog5050
Had to be Butch. Heck, I think that's how the term "butch" became synonymous with being manly. The prototypical bully.
DirtTime
That would be Spanky of course. Sorry to post a not related thread. The new place we have a few corn fields about three miles down the road. They were looking pretty shabby looking until we had a good rain this past week. Not they are sprouting and baby corns on the stalks. The dry weather is not helping plots or farmers. SplitG2
Buckwheat is a good organic matter builder in the soil but it needs to be plowed under while it's still green. Deer will eat it but it's not a preferred deer choice. Turkeys will eat the seed heads. I would plant winter rye or winter wheat this time of year so deer will have something to eat in the fall even after the first frost...than plow it under in the spring, which will also build organic matter in the soil. just my opinion.

Pygmy
Every now and then even a blind hog finds an acorn.. After seeding and fertilizing my buckwheat Saturday, this rain that we got overnight should initiate germination.. That stuff should be popping out of the ground within a few days.

Pygmy
Back to the REAL buckwheat..I checked the plot this morning and after being in the ground just since Saturday, the first seedings are popping up. However, after getting 3.5 inches of rain today, some of it may have washed away...
landtracdeerhunter
Good luck on the buckwheat. Was always a fun crop to grow and the pancakes were delicious.
