What would cause this ?

A friend received these pics of a deer with what appears to be tumors but doesn't know the deer's location .... Any thought on what may have caused this ?

I think he is refurring to the size of the deer on the deer fibroma page... which I didn't kill.. and I really don't know what it has to do with AR... it's a deer fibroma page fro crying out loud.. he makes absolutely no sense to me ever..

That looks like an extreme case. Think I'd pop that one just to decrease the chance of that ugly trait spreading to the rest of the herd if by chance it's hereditary.

I did get this one 2 years ago and saw a buck over summer that had some good growth beginning to cover his eyes and face. Not nearly as severe as that though.

BTW- no meat wasted, only skin deep

deer fibroma is isolated to the skin only and does not affect the meat in any way.. although after looking at a bad case of fibroma I start to lose my appetite...

Several years ago I shot a buck that had several of those tumors on it- one hanging off of its r eyelid the size of an apple! very unappetizing, but on skinning they are totally confined to the skin- as has been mentioned previously. The first deer pictures is diseased enough with them I wouldnt say they were harmless...theyre growth will sap the body, and when they get that clustered around the eyes, nose , mouth etc. they certainly can harm it.

It is very rare that the tumors themselves are harmful, they are just a wart caused by a virus... other than the inconvenience they may cause if they get large enough to impair vision or movement ... the warts themselves are not toxic in any way to the deer

I have only seen one of these wart / tumors on a deer once and that was this past year . There was nothing under the hide .
