Going back to the recurve this season

Old school equipment has a hold on me again.  It is certainly much lighter to lug around and needs no release to shoot.  I'm good to 30 yards without any problem.

Awesome! Tell us more about that bow, it's beautiful!  I want to go back to a traditional bow for next year. To come full circle. Killed my first bow deer with a recurve, want to kill my last bow deer with one.

It's a rather rare recurve.  It's labeled "Colt Firearms Industries" and was made in the late 60's or early 70's.  It's a 50 lb pull.   I draw 29 inches.  I forget the length of this bow.  I'd have to check.  Kwikee Kwiver and hood comes off easily.  Aluminum 2117 arrows.  No sight.  "No Glove"  brand 3 finger rubber holds the nock on the string well and I use a simple rubber Bear brand arrow rest.  It works in all weather and very little can go wrong with it under normal conditions.

I currently have 3 recurves to hunt with but this one's set up for this year.  I used to have 6 of them, but sold the ones I never used, or were ugly now.

I forgot to mention I'm using Sattelite 125gr 3 blade broad heads that I've had for about a decade and never opened the package.  They're just like new.  (Hate putting them together though)

I am hoping to take it to 40 yards after practicing more.  The bow has the power to do it, but If I can't hit a paper plate with every shot at that distance, I won't do it.  Most deer I take with a bow are less than 25 yards away anyhow.

As much as I practice, 30 is about my limit on deer with the recurve.   My groups starting opening up too much after that.  But I agree that 30 is plenty to kill deer.  Good luck extending your range even further.

I think the enemy to accuracy is fatigue.  I shoot only 10 arrows a session.  Then I quit for at least an hour, preferably 2 hours or more.  I figure only the first shot counts anyway.  I concentrate on that first shot the most.  I've only gotten a 2nd shot twice in all my years of bow hunting.

The bow only carries 4 arrows and one is holding the Kwikee hood.

 Don't let next year be the last deer you get! If you go back to trad gear you will want to hunt for a lot longer!!  If need any help setting anything up or just want to shoot let me know I have been hunting traditional for the last 14-15 years. I have a few bows that you could try out to see what you like too.

 

Rattler I have found that the farther out you practice the better you get closer! If you want to shoot 30 go to 40 and practice then walk up to 30 and you will be amazed.

Thanks Matt, I may just take you up on that offer! Just starting to get back into shooting form after my shoulder surgery in May. I hope to bow hunt as long as possible after next year. But won't be able to hunt trad this year. Hoping to get started this winter in my basement. Once I go back to a trad bow, that is how I'll finish out my bow hunting career. As long as I can stay healthy and pull full draw, I'll be hunting! Between you and moog5050, I hope to get all set up, with advice and everything I need to make this happen! I so much look forward to standing over a deer taken with trad gear again!!!

My bow is labeled Colt Master Hunter and is a 60 inch bow.  But it measures 55 inches from tip to tip when measured across the flat.  

I need to get string silencers for it.  Anyone have any suggestions?

try wooly whispers i like them alot but if you hunt in the rain I would go with cat whiskers.

Consider a string from mountain muffler - they have mufflers built in that really help to reduce noise.  Steve B on this site is the string maker.  Very nice strings.  I have used bow hush and hush puppies too, but now prefer to use Steve's strings.

Bow hush is in a holding pattern right now i think. They do work very well but I don't think you can get them unless you pick them up from someone else. 

 If you want cool colors you can pick up different colored cat whiskers from 60x strings to. They are easy to put on yourself also.

I am loving shooting my new recurve. More than I thought I would. Wish I could bring it home to the city but not sure the NYPD would like me shooting on my rooftop deck.

I should have bought 40 lb limbs instead of 30 though. Now I need another set to legally hunt. Oh well.

Moog turned me on to Mountain Muffler and Steve has been great in answering all my questions. My second string from him is being ordered today.

I sell the Bow Hush silencers and wrap as well - took it over from the owner. Great add on option if you have a string already.

I was just looking at the site and at the bottom of the "about" page it says that the strings are for ff bows only. Just something to think about for anyone who might shoot an older bow like I do.

Unlike compound bows, recurves, and even more so longbows, will not lose significant velocity with moderate arrow weight increases. I once ran my 60# Howatt "Hunter" over a chronograph with 100gr and 145gr screw in broadheads. The velocity loss was less than 5 fps average.

Cut on contact broadheads will significantly improve penetration. I soid a lot of Magnus 2 blade (4 with insert) broadneads when I had my traditional archery business.

 

My favorites were the old 125gr Bear glue on razorheads.

 

My wife and I made and sold about 350 dozen custom cedar arrows back in the mid 1990s. These are my personal hunting arrows. I had arrows in Germany and France.

 

I still have about 2000 Port Orford Cedat shafts in the barn.

 

As others have said, 40yds is stretching it. 30 yds was my maximum and most of my bow kills were 20yds or less.

I shot FF Flemish strings on all of the traditional bows I had. What I like about FF strings is that they do not change brace height when unstrung and restrung like Dacron strings.

 

Any modern (FG laminated) bow should be able to take the shock unless the string nocks are fragile.

 

Most quality bows made from the late 1960s on had reinforced string nocks as does the bow in OPs post.

D97 still has a fair amount of elasticity and Steve uses it if requested.  Same string material black widow uses.  I don't know whether the OPs bow requires Dacron.

The B55 is dacron for non ff bows
