Mambwe
I'm looking for a new deer rifle chambered in .308. I'm looking for a bolt action rifle with a wood stock. Wood stock in mandatory. For some reason, hunting and wood stocks go together to me. What's my best bet in a deer rifle with the above features?
moog5050
Lots out there. Your expected price range might narrow down the field.
Mambwe
$1,000 max not including a scope. But, I wouldn't mind paying less. Edited September 26, 2017 by Mambwe
Padre86
Savage Model 11 lightweight's (.308) can be had for well under $1k. I think used, they can be found for ~$500-$600, some with a scope already installed. 20" barrel, 1:10 twist, light-weight (relatively-speaking) stock...it's a basic but good setup. Lawdwaz
Tikka makes a wood stocked gun of high regard. Tough to whoop on a nice Remington,!Winchester, Browning, Sako etc.

moog5050
I like tikka as an option. I always hear they are shooters.
Tughill Tamer
Not a real popular option but if you're looking to save a little coin there's the Mossberg Patriot for around $450. I have one in 270 and so far it's been a good gun and is not to hard on the eyes.Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

I think Beretta markets them, but they are made in Finland by Tikka/ Sako, whatever... Very high quality firearms in any case.. Aside from that, aren't there still 6 minutes ago, Lawdwaz said: I believe they are both owned by Beretta. US made rifles by Rem, Savage, Ruger, Winchester being made with blued finishes and wood stocks available ?? I have not priced them in a few years, but not that long ago very high quality and accurate rifles were being imported by CZ with wood stocks ( I have one in a CZ 550 American) for less than a grand....My CZ is a tack driver and I have NEVER talked to a person who owned a CZ rifle that was not scary accurate..
Salmon_Run
I absolutely love my Kimber 84M in .308; it weights only 5.5 lbs and has a beautiful oil finished walnut stock. It falls right in your price range. Been hunting with it for about five years now in the Adirondack deep woods and western New York farm lands. Always performed as expected, I own several Remington's, Browning's and this seems to be my "go to" mostly because of the light weight. Enjoy shopping, that's about half the fun of getting a new rifle.
BigVal
Tikka. I had one in .270 wsm that I wish I never sold. Great rifle for the money. Tack driver.
uberyan
Tikka/Sako rifles are very sweet shooters. I've shot a couple of models and they all shot and felt really nice, very very smooth action. The T3X Hunter will get you what you want for around $7-800. If you want to go with a more budget route, I'd take a look at the Ruger American line. I don't think any come with a wooden stock from the factory, but at the prices they go for you can easily add a nice Boyd's or other aftermarket woodstock and still be way under the $1k mark. I've got the predator in .308 and while the plastic stock is pretty cheap, overall it's a solid shooter. Thinking of dropping it into a At-One stock in the future but I also don't mind the synthetic stock as a throw around beater of sorts. Why go with the Ruger American and then exchange stocks when you can get a Ruger M77 in a wood stock for well under $1,000? There seems to be no love for the old M77, but it will kill game with the best of them.
uberyan
I think the Hawkeyes (what they call the M77s now) retail for a similar price point to the Tikkas ($7-800). The Americans in .308 can be had for under $400. Stocks are $150 (for a standard Boyds). The American actions are easy DIY drop ins and you don't need to pay smithing fees to swap the stocks. Not saying the Hawkeyes aren't good rifles, pretty much any modern rifle in the proper caliber will consistently kill game. They aren't super budget shooters in my opinion and at that price point, I'd rather get the Tikka.
steve863
I agree, any model will do the trick. I do find the Ruger M77's to be much more classier rifles than the Ruger American, which is a budget priced gun. For the little more you are paying, you also get a Mauser style action with the M77. Not that it's most important, but I'm sure the M77 will holds it's value down the road way better than the budget priced American would.
