Food plots on public land

Hey guys, I have NEVER planted a food plot in my life, let alone hunted over one but I was thinking about planting one sometime. My question is: can you plant a food plot on state land?

I'm sure people have ! Of course if you do it would be one of those " Throw -n- Grow" type of deals because you cannot be tilling state land . But that's just my opinion .

Yes, you’re right, you can’t till it! Just an idea but probably would be too much work anyway , never hunted Stewart, may have to check it out

My concerns would be other hunters hunting over it. Not like you can stop them.

Yes I agree , IF I did it, I would find a spot deep in to reduce the likelihood of that occurring although there would never be any guarantee that I would have it all to myself for sure

Anyone have a idea how  likely those food plot  seeds will grow on a forest floor with out doing anything else to the land?  I think it may be more trouble then it's worth with no  guarantee that it will Even grow.

I doubt the dec would like invasive plants being seeded on public land jmo could result in big fines

I think you need a permit to farm state land if I'm not mistaken.

Yes , that sounds right Storm, I guess best way to find out is  do some research and make a phone call to the regional office

Actually I just did some research and I found an old thread from this forum from 2011 where the guys were saying it is perfectly legal to establish and hunt over a public land foodplot .

If it is indeed legal, most all seeds will grow without tilling soil, Some are better than others.. Such as Winter rye as mentioned, smaller the seed the better. An adequate rainfall is required though. Your hardest part would be removing weeds and grass competition. Without tilling or spraying..

Here is another issue you may have to worry about deer may like   feeding on those seeds so if you are just chucking them on the ground with out physically planting them. You may technically be accused of baiting deer  even if it is  pre season when you do this . Between that and the fact its public land and others may hunt over it seems like more trouble then its worth in my opinion.

Unless I read it wrong, that old thread was about food plots in general, not on public land is all. I can bot imagine it is legal to do so.

OK .... I live near a Power Line .... I'm thinking of throwing winter rye or anything that will grow without tilling / planting ... what might be best ? There are always ATV's traveling along the power line so its not like it would be trespassing !

Power lines are right of ways  issued to the power company  or owned by the power company. Same as gas lines . Unless other wise posted as public access  you are trespassing.  Exception public lands. I have a gas line , and power line on my property . They are posted . I have constant  battles with people crossing my backyard with 4 wheelers , snowmobiles. Have had one guy ticketed  multiple times . Last time he appeared  in court  judge warned him if he did it again he was going to jail and they were going to seize  his vehicle. You should check for owner permission  before doing anything.
