Gun value ....help a bowhunter out.

Looking for a gun value, if anyone can give me any guidance on a price i would Appreciate it ...

 

Winchester model 70 Featherweight 7x57, very good condition. With the factory rings. Its has the red butt pad with Winchester logo on it.....think that matters for the date and manufacture location.

 

Anyone have any input?

I’d be asking $900 as a starting price, and probably take $750 if offered. It’s not a really in demand caliber, but guns are selling for stupid money right now.

I would caution though, I’m no expert on bolt actions (nor anything for that matter) but if it were mine, that’s what I would be going with.

The only way to get an idea in Gunbroker is if you go to “completed auctions/sales”.  Do not assume any values by what guns are listed at but not sold yet.

Do NOT sell/trade in at a gun shop /pawn shop, etc. you will only get a fraction of its value. That is a great gun in a great round, although not a current favorite. You should be able to do a serial number search online with a bit of homework to get the mfg year.

X2 .... I sold an old 30-06 Remington to a small gun shop and was in a hurry for a little cash , they gave me $ 200 and I was good to go ! I went back for a Bow tune up and there was my old 30-06 on the rack for $ 600 ! It pays to do research and not be in a hurry !

A friend of mine sold a couple of guns to a gun shop, for store credit. Not only did he get shafted on what they paid, but he is locked into buying from them if he wants to spend the money.

Typically a retail shop will give you half of what they think they can get for it . Most gun shops I’ve been in don’t look like they’re making a killing .

I sold a bunch of guns through an auction house , they take 20% of the sale price no reserve. With having to do a nics check on each gun sale and dealing with untold number of perspective buyers if I sold them myself seemed like the way to go .

Thanks guys. I am in no hurry, so it wont be going to dealer or trade in. I just have too much stuff and should consolidate. Guns especially, considering I have hunted with a rifle about 2 hours in the last 15 years, maybe I dont need 20 of them laying around...
Any way I think is one was made in the early 80s. Its in really good condition. I had a load worked up with 140 grain ballistic tips and shot excellent.

Is this Winchester a pre-64 type action or the push feed action?  The pre-64 will definitely bring you more money probably by at least $300.

OK, you just answered my question.  That is a push feed.  Will bring less $ than the pre-64.

I've been shopping guns lately, and I doubt you can find a push feed M70 featherweight in good shape for less than $600, let alone a 7x57. There are still some deals to be found, but if I was selling it I'd put it online for $800, and $700 if I wanted to sell it fast. I've been looking for a 223 in an XTR for a while, they run around $8-900, about as rare as the 7x57, maybe less so."

I think you are correct that the 7X57 will bring you more.  I would try listing between the $800 and $900 and see what happens.

This is getting to be an older thread, but it looks to be a post 64 rifle (no full length extractor on the bolt that I can see). Still a fine rifle though. I have sold quite a few firearms through an auction house in Geneva Henneseys if i remember:). They advertise with pics, and you get what the market /demand is. I have overall done alright. Selling guns nowadays is not what it was twenty years ago. The auction house gets about 20 % commission on selling price, but that is still a far cry better than what you get selling to a gun shop/etc, and they handle all the paperwork.
