Some are still hanging on to em!

On a year like this one, you may see alot of strange things. I wouldn't say that is not unusual for some. The ones that have had good nutrition, and no injuries, can keep'em quite a while. Some are still pack'en here yet too. Going to give them another week, before looking for sheds.

Last year during the second weekend of turkey hunting, seen a buck with new growth that was big velvet rack. Coarse, they always look bigger in velvet. Seen deer in velvet that early before , but never that size. I would guess that he started growing early, being the size it was, for that time of year. Tried to swing around to get a pick, but the old boy caught movement, and was gone.

I havent seen one with antlers since that day, and Ive still seen alot of deer. Problem is, things are already starting to green up. If this weather keeps up, this weekend may be the last one to get out there before things grow too much. The flowers are already grown and blossoming at my place, and the weeping willow in the side yard has leaves coming out, same with the lilac bushes.

The good news is that the clover/alfalfa fields are really sprouting up too. All of that new succulent high protein growth is just what the bucks need right now to come out the gates strong to show their maximum antler potential!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

So what's the story? Anybody still seeing antlers attached to bucks yet? I was hoping we might get some idea as to the latest that we might still see bucks with antlers.

My wifes cousin said he saw one last week crossing the road that had 1/2 his antlers still on. I havent seen a buck since the last week of muzzleloader :)

One of the problems is that few of us are out in the woods right now with all the household spring chores. So we don't get to log as many hours of observations to really see what's going on. But I was hoping with all the shed-hunting going on we might get more reports on some bucks holding on to their antlers well beyond what we normally might expect. It's interesting that erussell has had a report of one as recently as last week. We're getting pretty late in the year now. So there at least was one that has kept an antler into April, or at least darn near it. That is interesting!

The only time I've been out is when I have gone over to the swamp to tend to my trail cam. I'm usually not all that sneaky when I do that. So I suppose any antlered bucks, or any other deer for that matter, probably are long gone by the time I get there. We don't have any local farm fields where I might be able to see them from a distance. So other than an occasional hike up on the hill, there probably is not much chance that I will see one even if they are there. No deer hanging around the yard anymore like there was.

Yeah they arent really hanging in the fields as much lately as they had been. Im pretty sure its because theres lots of tender buds and greens popping up in the woods, so they are just staying out of sight. I was out shed hunting the other day and snuck up on a real good buck that had dropped already. He didnt stick around long enough to get a pic though.

Seen a buck Easter morning with about 3 inches of new growth. I would say that's not to unusual for this time of year, but don't see them that often.Very close to getting a pic, but........... You're right WNY, he was in the woods eating buds and young grasses. Also, not seeing to many wild flowers in the woods. Think the deer are cleaning them up. The deer I've seen have looked very nice and rounded out. Should be some nice size fawns this year, as the mothers are really pack'en in the protein.
