  1. So I was talking to a vegan the other day that I ran across a few times in my life who is always crusading for her way of life. I do admire her passion but I disagree with her lifestyle. She's currently peddling a book that she wrote about the food industry and her life style, animals rights etc... She asked me if I wanted to buy a copy and I politely said I wasn't interested until she told me that "I need to open my mind and experience different things and learn the truth!" So I acknowledge that she was correct that I was a close minded in this aspect and had little knowledge of the vegan lifestyle and proposed this deal. I offered to purchase the book and read in its entirety if and only if she agreed to come with me hunting as a spectator alone. Let's just say I will not being purchasing the book or reading it. Its funny the so called "open minded vegan" that wanted me to learn her lifestyle was to close minded to try mine. PS My deer meat pot roast I just ate was delicious and a 100% organic

  2. Yep- we'll see if the shake-up is enough to kick start them in the upcoming game against TO. Heck- any one of us could be behind the bench for this one and expect them to be fueled by the rivalry alone....who knows.

  4. There are a lot of things that get passed off as "science" that definitely need de-bunking. That is where the term "junk science" came from. Biased, contrived, manipulated, studies and experiments can be powerful tools for those subjects that have political outcomes. Heavily funded "scientific" studies funded by those that have a stake in the outcomes come to mind. Our biggest shortfall is in being so intellectually lazy as to simply grab onto whatever version of "science" that suits our purposes and then passing it off as fact. It's a common tactic used with the hope that it will stop opposing arguments in their tracks with it all being posed as irrefutable scientific fact.

  9. I dropped the cash for one last Friday. Anybody else have one? How about IPhone 4, 4S? So far battery suckage has been considerable. I'm still (and will be for a bit) trying to learn about it from my 15 year old daughter & any other kid that has one! I have only loaded a couple apps: EBay & The Weather Channel. What other apps do you guys use? I DON'T want any games......... Oh yea, I butt dialed a guy yesterday, two times. How can that happen with that slide lock thing?

  10. Batteries can be a sore spot for people who use trail cams. As such people fall into three or four camps: Lithium users Rechargeable users External/solar users Alkaline (both cheapos and brand name buyers) I don't dabble in homebrews, but I run 8-10 cams a year. I once owned as many as 15 at a time. I've probably owned somewhere along the lines of 65-75 cams since I started with a Photo Hunter (very early on in the game cam market). I think one of the allures for me was that I was "growing up" both as a hunter and also going through high school/college/career at that time and tech was part of that, so the aspect intrigued me in a hunting setting. I've been there done that with battery wars. No fit is perfect for everyone. I transitioned away from anything other than AA batteries. Cams using C or D just are not fun to work with because of the cost and trouble finding deals. Rechargeables are OK, but again, it's too much tinkering. Plus, one thing I really didn't account for, is the fact I LOST quite a few of them. I'd throw them in my pocket in the woods at one set, check the next cam, and lose one or two when I bent over to check the cam. Or, I'd be unloading gear at the truck, and lose a handful in 3 feet of snow (Ever drop your keys after a good snow storm? Ugh), and I wouldn't find them until it melted. Externals are nice, but are a big outlay upfront, and let's be honest here...they're stupid bulky to deal with on a tree. We don't plop a cam in front of a feeder or lick here as it is not legal. Unless you leave a cam in a single spot year round or maybe move it once, it's a pain to move and you reduce the number of trees you can easily set the cam on. It becomes much more troublesome when you mount cams high (6-7 ft. plus) Lithiums rock in certain cams. No doubt, they have the longevity and cold weather markets cornered. But, realize almost all cams that have battery meters are not going to be realistic with lithiums installed. It'll say "full bars"....all the way up until it quits - it'll never give you an accurate battery reading for what users need. It's not going to read along the lines of an alkaline that loses power over time. Lithiums just quit - it works, then doesn't. You won't know it in the field until it's dead. I like to know that if my cam says 1 bar out of 3, then I need to toss in some freshies. There's also no real deals. Ebay has some for .50-$1.00 each, but quite a few people have reported they get more bad apples in the bunch than the traditional Energizer lithium pack purchases. So, in my search for the best cost vs. real world use, I came across Utilitech batteries at Lowes. On Black Friday, you can buy 30 packs for $4. Normally, you can buy 100 packs for $22. They are alkaline and honestly, over the past 18 mos. I have significantly reduced my battery costs and I still get more than acceptable battery life and use. I bet I likely let cams soak longer than anyone on this site on average and I still don't feel like I need to worry about whether the cam will be dead when I arrive. Two xmas ago, I bought 4 30 packs of them on Black Friday. I ran 8.5 cams (I sold one midway) on that purchase for the entire year, save for two months where I pulled cams. I also had more than half a pack left, and I was not judicious when switching batteries as I likely could have let every single battery swap out go longer. The cams were 75% on video use and 25% on pic use...and video is much more demanding of battery power. I even went through most of the winter months with cams in the field. The cams seem to lock up before the batteries give way. Case in point, a Spypoint shut down for a few days with the cold temps this past month and the batteries were still reading full after 3 weeks, about 50 pics, and low single digit temps. Lithiums make an argument in super cold temps, and from time to time i'll use them if I need to for a specific purpose, but honestly, I'm not all that worried about Late Jan and Feb. images for my hunting purposes. These Utilitechs still work well in cold temps to the point I didn't use lithiums at all last year. For $18 after tax, I powered all of my cams and had leftover batteries. If you use AA batteries in your cams, I'd consider these as a viable option. http://www.lowes.com...eries=

  11. That is a bunch of BS. Coming from someone who has actually done it, that is not how we hunt them. Also, the hounds we hunt with were not trained the way mentioned. We hunt only land that we have permission. Huge pieces because almost everyone gives permission to hunt coyotes where we hunt in Delaware county. We also don't even start to hunt them until deer season is completely over, not starting october like someone mentioned. Nobody shoots to intentionally wound a coyote, almost all are killed by the shooters. Occasionally one will bay up and will get killed by the dogs, but rarely. The dogs are released on a fresh track, hopefully after a fresh snow. Dogs do have gps collars so the handler knows exactly where they are and whats going on. Once they jump one you can hear the differnce in the hounds. The coyotes will usually start to circle and we get shooters in position for the shot. Sometimes the dogs are right on the coyote, most times the coyote is out ahead quite a bit. Not very different than rabbit hunting. Most landowners are more than happy to let us coyote hunt on their property, it's the only way to really control them besides trapping.

  13. I share much of the same views on that subject and I'm anything but an anti hunter. I didn't realize they actually let the dogs get the kill. I always thought they were gunned down "firing line style". I don't try to tell people what's right & wrong, but to me it's not all that sporting. I realize some guys abide by the game/property laws, but many don't and that leaves a bad taste in the mouths of law abiding hunters. I guess my stance on this is partly due to being a die hard predator hunter(caller) with a healthy respect for my quarry. Like I've said before, it's just not for me. In the words of Montgomery Gentry, "you do your thing, I'll do mine".

  16. I've easily had the most success with my diaphragm calls but love to suck in the hung up ones with the slate call. My problem with the slate is sometimes it sounds like DOGDUNG. I've tried a bunch of different ones and different strikers and still have up & down results. The box is mostly just a locater call for me. I couldn't finish off a 35lb domestic bird with a box call. BUT......I always have at least one and sometimes two box calls ready to roll in my vest. My crow call is my favorite shock gobbler call. I use a hooter until I hear the first real crow of the morning although I will admit to being the first crow on the block to be calling some mornings!!! Do you have a turkey hunting vest yet? Get a good one cause you might have it for 30+ years like me. Heck, you don't see camo like this anymore!!

My gosh ..... it's getting pretty bad when you start having motor vehicle accidents in your hunting turf because of excess trespasser traffic ...... lol.

  22. everything will fit with a sawzall and welder! the winch that came on my polaris was made by warn (dont know if it was factory or dealer option), the no name i put on my trailer came with slots rather then holes so it was more 'universal' in the mounting. best bet would be take your winch off, measure the mounting holes, go to tractor supply, lowes, harbor frieght, open some boxes and see if any will bolt straight up.

  23. But there was always that one jerk that would think he was funny and give it a couple of extra pumps. More than once I came home with some pretty substantial welts on my legs of back. Most of us had the crappy little lever action rough rider bb guns like in the christmas story so it really didnt hurt to much. I think about it today and all I can say is it really wasnt to smart on our part and I would kill my kids if they do anything as stupid. But we were tougher back then I guess. Most the kids I know need a helmet just to walk down the street let alone ride a bike.

  24. Why limit it to PENS ?? It should be location specific... If the guy opens up in a gay bar, pummel him with your PURSE !! If he's in a butcher shop, RAP with with a RUMP ROAST !! If he's at the fish market, SLAM him with a SALMON !! If he's in a deli, KNOCK him out with a KNOCKWURST !! If he's in a nudist colony, WHACK him with your WEENIE !! The possibilities are endless...Who NEEDS guns ??

  26. Kid or not im sure if hes working on a farm im pretty sure hes busting his butt more hours a week than you or i. I wasnt stabbing at anyones lifestyle, just the get out of my way im going to make this happen attitude is very refreshing. something thats becoming lost in our society. Same thought procsess you have, or your would just buy your meat at the butcher. This is one of those culture differances with up state down state. if you needed a lawn shed for your mower you go to the amish store down the road and buy one. when i needed one my kids and i got out the tools, spent the weekend and just as much money building what is probably the same shed. the question is whos the richer for it? once again great to see redneck enginnering in action!

  31. All depends. Any old truck will do. an f-250 diesel super duty crew cab ( or bigger ) with a lift kit and some good muddin tires to tow your tank sized quad to upstate ny for 3 or 4 weekends a year seems to do the trick. Of course you'd probably have to relocate to the garden state to meet the qualifications to operate such a rig. Trust me the good ole boys up here will really be impressed. All kidding aside, any truck, any gun will do the trick, as long as you get out in the woods and enjoy yourself. No offense meant to any nj people either. My family from nj are guilty of the aforementioned offense

  37. Actually In Ny trespassing is trespassing but if not legally posted you can not have the violator arrested then, until you give them formal written notification that they did trespass. Then you can get them the next time. Much easier to just post it legally. I would bet that SplitG2 is to the letter of the law on his. Name, address, two signs facing both directions at outside corners, one at any change in direction and one every 660' (minimum) I would strongly recommend a lot closer than 660', especially if cover is thick. I post to be able to see two sigs from any spot on our property.

  40. What on earth gave anyone the idea that he is looking for dogs, or coyote hunting, or any other made-up story. The guy is simply disrespecting the landowner by ignoring the signs and helping himself to something that is not his. You want to make up stories? ..... How about the guy just ripped down one of the landowner's signs and cut through a fence and left behind a trail of beer bottles and candy wrappers. How's that for a made-up story. Or how about the guy spotted a huge buck back in there as he was driving the roads the other night and thought he might just ignore the fact that the season is closed and slip in there and try to get him. That's another great story. But most likely the real story is that he simply feels entitled to use anybody else's property and ignore the signs that try to tell him otherwise. Probably is full of envy against the lucky S.O.B. that owns the land. Man, I hate trespassers. They're just a bunch of free-loaders that have absolutely no respect for the property of others. You can try to justify it all you want, but the kind of attitudes that run through the mind of trespassers is exactly the same as anyone else who thinks the world owes them something. Let someone start wandering around his front yard and see how tolerant he is of that little act. No it may not be the most heinous criminal act ever committed, but that doesn't mean that anyone should try to justify it. And it doesn't make the mentality and sense of entitlement that drives that kind of disrespect any easier to take.

  43. I would actually like to see school security become a trained career. I'm talking about an actual schooling with intense firearms handling, martial arts and examples of scenarios and recommended reactions, and rules of policy. I do not mean a couple weeks of seminars. It would be good to actually develop a curriculum with testing and certification when completed. Upon completion there would be an intense background check, and an offer of jobs that actually allowed these graduates to earn a decent income. Such a trained professional security could be useful in schools and any other place that needed quality trained people in that field.

  47. For the purpose of yearling buck protection alone.. aging to 3.5 ...which is relatively easy...is more than adequate for determining the success of the program... it becomes harder when the intention is to determine and maintain higher age classes than 3.5... it would be nearly impossible to manage whitetails publicly or through mandate as it's done in places like texas or on some QDM properties for much older buck age classes... logistically it would be a nightmare to try and do state wide. Just protecting yearlings in NY would create a vast improvement in buck age structure... beyond that... just not that easy to do.
    1 point
  48. I avoid most of these discussions because the quickly get ugly and I am highly associated with the QDMA. I just want to say a few things. 1) nothing less than a 6pt may save some 1.5 year old bucks but it is not going to impact the entire state. Too many 1.5 year olds would still be harvested. This is the biggest problem with AR's/age restrictions. It is difficult to have harvest guidelines to save 1.5 year olds that can be easily incorporated by the average 1 weekend a year hunter. I happen to use 2.5 or better on my farm, I have increased my harvest goal to 3.5, I have a friend who hunts. He has a hard time aging bucks so for him it is 8 or better. These are not perfect but are a starting point. 2) NY's buck harvest consists of 54% 1.5 year old bucks. If we could get that to 40% you would see a difference in the age structure in MOST parts of the state. We (the GRST QDMA Branch) hopes to help with this goal through education and choice not manadorty anything at this point. 3) Statewide Age/antler restrictions will not work, the state is too large and differs heavily on the number and quality of deer. I can not expect a hunter who feeds his family to pass on 1.5 year olds in areas that do not have doe permits and or have poor deer numbers. 4) Trophy... QDM is not trophy management. QDM has alot to offer all hunters with it's biggest impact is trying to encourage hunters to be managers rather than just consumers. I would guess over 60% of the NY hunters have no idea of the good work the QDMA does for each and everyone of us, because they assume it is all about trophies. NY in general has great potential as others have mentioned, but it is going to take a majority of us to rethink our harvest goals.

  49. Good show. Federal prosecutor on show just brought up a good point regarding the reasonable restrictions commentary from the supreme court ruling (dc vs. Heller). If the criminals who possess illegal weapons containing 15 or 30 rounds, restricting legal gun owners to 7 rounds to protect themselves, and their property is not a reasonable restriction.
