Haven't gotten many photos of mature does over the past couple of weeks so I had to assume they were fawning. First sighting (photo) for this year. Okay, I'm going to adjust the date stamp. Should read 06-05-13.2 points

Ticked some people off? Sheesh. Nobody gets that fired up here that identifying a mug becomes a priority. Me thinks you just ugly. LOL.2 points

So i got out to the property today to check the two cameras i have up, place another recently acquired camera, hang some posted signs, and check on the new food plot. Before i got started i noticed a road kill deer right in front of the entrance...i was very disappointed to see it was a young buck. After the initial let down of the dead deer, I went on and finished the posted signs and ended up at the newly planted plot. It looked great! It wasn't overly saturated, which i was fearing, and the card showed i already had 54 photos, which is the most i had this year after one week. No deer in this photo, but it shows how much growth the plot had at the beginning of the week. Looks like a bigger deer compared to the first couple. noted by his sagging belly. Also looks like a bigger deer. probably the same as above For a week filled with a lot of rain and not much sun, I was happy with the amount of growth. I am not convinced that any of these deer are the one i was chasing last year, but time will tell.2 points

First let me start off by saying I have been following this site for about a year or so now, but this is my first real post. As a little introduction I am 24 and have only been hunting for a few years ( parents didn't hunt). I am also a full time nurse practitioner student so I don't have much time dedicated to anything other than that. About a month or so ago I noticed another post about a no till experiment and I was inspired to give it a try. The spot I chose has some history to me. Out of the 90 acres I have to hunt, only about 10 acres of it is hardwoods, with the rest being farmed fields (soybeans), and 30 or so acres of thick brush that acts as bedding areas for most of the deer on the property. Last year I Spent the majority of my bow season trying to out smart a fairly nice 10 point. The opportunity I was giving was in the block of hardwoods. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a shot because of bushes and branches being in the way. This is pretty much what it looked like before I started clearing out the area. This year I decide to clear it out and plant Whitetail Institute secret spot in hopes that I may be able to draw that deer in for another opportunity. On a side note I never got an trailcam pic of this deer last year, but I did find half of his rack in the shed hunting season. Not the best picture but it is all I have at the moment. G2 and G3 are 9.5" and 10" respectively. Any way so about 3 weeks ago I cleared out all the bushes and small trees, until it was bare dirt and look like this. I sprayed round up on all of the small weeds and waited a week, then spread out a 50lb bag of pulverized lime, and a 25lb bag of 10-10-10. I know I should have probably done a soil test but I don't have a lot of time to really dedicate to prep work so I just tried my best to do what I can ( full time student and full time work). Then about two weeks ago I planted the secret spot before all the rain was due and then checked back only 3-4 days later and already started to see a small amount of growth. I have a trailcam placed over the plot since I was last there (10 days ago or so). I cant wait to check back this weekend to see how much progress it has made and hopefully what visitors I may have. p.s. thanks to whoever had that original post about the no til experiment, I wouldn't have thought about this option without you!1 point

Ditto on that! Thanks......I've only had to do that twice...and it's just an awful thing... Hhmm I can see where you'd think that...gosh this time of year I'm always "Putting down" some thing or other...seed...lime...fertilizer...spray..insecticide...Makes waiting for the "picking up"part seem a long ways off...peas..berries...corn..squirrel...apples...turkey...pear...deer...lol1 point

confused by what this thread is about. and if you think the "troll pic" was some pic I made, you need to explore the internet. I only used that photo for a while because i pissed some people off and didn't need my real mug out there.1 point

What you are describing sounds like (another} built in mechanism animals have to counter less than ideal conditions. But some things in nature don't work perfect. The habit of nesting against trees may be an example. A prediction is that when the restoration of turkeys, which were depleted from market hunting began, biologists were assuming turkeys were old growth, big woods birds - because that is were the remaining birds existed. However, when birds were restored, they did better in other habitats. Those remnant birds probably were there not because that habitat favored survival, but because market hunters couldn't hit the mountains as hard. We transferred more birds into these suboptimal habitats and even introduced turkeys to areas that they did were not indigenous to. The birds expanded all over until the populations in the suboptimal areas experienced "population contraction" (what may be going on right now, per the DEC) mean while, and to no surprise, bird populations in more suitable habitat has not shown the same decline. One explanation or partial explanation why that habitat {woodland, mountain with plenty of oak acorns) might be less suitable is the presence of squirrels and / or the absence of fallow fields along with the tendency of turkeys to nest against tree bases. In any event, demanding the DEC focus on one factor or one predator, isn't constructive and is going to make sportsmen look ignorant to the non shooting conservationists. (Which actually is a fair assessment in all too many cases}...1 point

That bear came through twenty six hours after that doe was there with her newborn fawn. I doubt that's coincidence.1 point

I didnt have to pass any shooting test to get my hunters ed certificate if thats what you mean. Do I think you should have to? Absolutely.1 point

I dont think thats the real reason why its illegal to sell venison, or any other wild game meat in NY and many other states. Its more along the lines of keeping poaching to a lower level and not allowing commercial hunting, which has been the cause of many wild game populations diminishing in the past. Deer were hunted almost to the brink, so were buffalo, etc.1 point

Keep the WB and you can look up what your proper arrow would be by going to any manufaturers web site. I prefer Easton's chart for ease of use. You would need a .500 spine for that set up, brand dosen't matter, and I prefer a heavy set up no matter the poundage, for you I would look 7-9 GPI.1 point

Basic Features: Black Flash - 60 ft or so 4, 8, 0r 12 AA batteries - long life (great characteristic of Covert cams) Up to three pic burst of programmable HD video plus sound (720 or 1080) Color viewer Several MP options for photos. What I found I liked: I am a big video fan overall because I use cams for hunting purposes. Videos show more information - period. Make it a legit black flash cam with HD and sound? Sure, I'm in. No more bugging out of dodge with a red blob glowing in the woods. Daytime videos are awesome. Nighttime images are Very Good. When it comes to nighttime images - I don't think I've seen a video yet that I would classify as "awesome" in black flash. But, I much prefer this cam's videos over anything I have had thus far, even including my favorite SG550 of old. Sounds is also interesting. It's pretty neat actually. We had a train derailment and one video I post you can hear the fire whistles going off for it. 720p HD is much better than 1080p on this cam because of frame rate. 30fps for 720 and 10 for 1080. Covert is going to tweak that...no doubt, whether it is in a firmware update or in new models. Still, 720 provides what you need. I doubt I'll ever use this cam on photo mode. My 2012 Black 60s are not HD video and I use them in pic mode only as a result (VGA isn't all that great) but also more for scouting and inventory. I am thinking about unloading some for the HD models so I can use video. Now, for the samples:1 point

Looks like I'm in the minority. I think hunting is easy. It doesn't have to be expensive, and you can fill a lot of freezer space in a short time if you're not picky. Finding and keeping a good place to hunt is the hardest part. Is it worth it....? I say yes to that too.1 point

No, I think that's an old wives tale, Paula.. Red squirrels ARE more aggressive than greys and I have seen them chase greys, but grey squirrels are also pretty tough customers and are twice as big as reds.. Greys prefer to avoid the conflict, but in an actual tooth and claw battle with a red squirrel, I suspect the grey would prevail... As far as the eating the testicle thing.. Squirrels eat NUTS, don't they ..?... <<grin>>....1 point

Taking the outlined and changing it to suit your opinions is fine and no one can tell you that your wrong for having that opinion however, that being said the mere fact that you just couldnt resist at taking a jab at others that are in support . and by jab I mean letting it be known that you took the outlined letter and changed it then posting that your changed it and sent to those email addresses. Is looking for an argument. this thread was for those who wished to send a letter of support and you are free to do what you like with it as well as others are but posting that you will send to oppose is for the sake of argueing...1 point
