Hello CFD, I've been doing a load of google.com research on the different deer calibers for just ny deer and coyote/ varmint combo I'm looking at 25-06, 257 Roberts or maybe a 7mm 08 if you want to include bear too. I'd love to find a good 25-06 as it seems to have it all covered with much less recoil than a 270 or 30 06. Just my 2 cents in an area where there are a million opinions. GM2 points

I think it is time for me to leave this thread alone. I find myself becoming more and more disgusted with hunters and gun owners who are now championing gun control, and I am sure that as a result I will eventually say something that I probably shouldn't.....lol.2 points

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/88898.html And http://nysparks.com/parks/152/amenities-activities.aspx According to these sources, Storm King is in Orange County, and allows hunting. I do not know if it is deer hunting ONLY, but deer hunting is permitted at Storm King. Regardless of your violations, the way you were treated and cuffed was uncalled for. I would try to remember the officers that did this to you and look to see if they violated any laws by doing so and use this in court. It is going to very helpful that you have the dash cam. The dash can can prove that you were not hunting, but was making sure that your firearm was safe before traveling in a motorized vehicle. In regards to possession of a firearm in a state park, you'll have to determine exactly where you were to fight this ticket. If you were indeed in an area where firearms are not allowed, this may stick. If you were on the DEC approved hunting area, then I do believe you have a case. Regardless of the outcome, these are monetary fines, and will not go on your record. It won't affect your job, or background checks. It's just $$$. Don't lose sleep over it, but do plan on fighting these tickets in court, I believe you'll win them both. P.S., how do you like that Mrod .25?2 points

First deer with the pistol. Ruger Redahawk 44 mag hornady leverevolutions. 30 yards through and through ran 30 yards. I'm pleased with the caliber1 point

i've got two 30-06s and all I ever shoot is 150 gr bullets. right now it seems both like Federal Fusion 150gr best. I'd shoot anything in NY with that round even if moose were to some day be legal.1 point

And people complain about shooting fawns...when they're some of the earliest winterkill. Someone should have shot that fawn this fall and ate it. Pretty clear the land and carrying capacity doesn't support it.1 point

You can use Rimfire to hunt for small game in general in all of NYS, with some exceptions such as region 1, 2, and 3S. Also, some properties such as Stewart State Forest. Shotgun only for deer doesn't mean shotgun only for squirrels. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems1 point

Those bails of hay are for helping your new grass seed grow in the spring right? Sucks the deer got to it... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

When all else fails and you're just starting out, buy the box that has the picture of what you're hunting on it lol. Over the years try different makes and loads and if you really get into it you can start hand loading. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

I like the Encore. Pistol that gives you many capabilities for calibers. Mine is in 308 win. It is a long barrel (15") but they come different lengths. sub 1" group at 100 yards and softball sized groups at 2001 point

basically any weight bullet fired from a 06 will be fine for deer. Don't worry so much about the weight. In a caliber like that it is more the construction of the bullet. That would be the best attention paid to any deer caliber. I read in you post that you are comfortable shooting at 200 yards. Just a question. Was that bench rest shooting? if the group is good on the bench, stand up and take the same distance shots off hand in any position you are going to use for actual hunting situations. That will be the best practice with your 22 or what ever gun you decide on.1 point

I want to purchase bails of hay or whatever and toss them out behind my barn, is that illegal? Does the law clearly state that hay bails have to be stored in doors?1 point

NYantler, that bottom buck is a total freak. Is that just one solid main beam? Looks like a tree trunk.1 point

It boils down to shot placement, My favorite 30 - 06 round for deer was the 165 grain NBT. Again just a hunters choice.1 point

Yea its 10 degrees and the snow is hardening to concrete, the deer are just about knocking on my door now....Think I will start by taking the burlap off some of my pines, that's if everyone here promises not to rat me out and have me arrested, Hee,Hee....1 point

Thanks everyone I am also looking at the Catskills as well. Probably will scrap Dutchess. Now I am wondering can I use my 22 in Dutchess for hare and squirrel? Or still shot gun only? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

I have said it all along. We do not have the numbers to fight this with gun owners alone. Too many are all for "sensible" gun control. Yeah right. When they kick in your door looking for you and your guns, I expect you will hand them over and say hmmmm I guess it is for the good of all. I for one will not be handing them over willingly. Just remember it was only 3 percent who stood up against the british and won. the other 97 percent rode on their coat tails. Sad but true.1 point

This year was the most pleasant shooting experience of my deer-hunting life. Ontario County became another new county allowing rifle use for deer. This year I actually had an opportunity to sit down with my deer gun (.270) and actually spend considerable time doing lot of target practice with it. It was fun, and didn't result in a black & blue shoulder or flinching. Sighting in my deer gun was actually a pleasant and fun experience and not something to be dreaded. The old 12 ga. Ithaca may never come out again .... lol. The .270? .... two deer for two shots.1 point

We all should follow the laws, whether you agree with them or not. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems1 point

Like I said... planting natural browse or enhancing what already exists in the habitat is the best thing we can do management wise to help deer during those extreme winters. Felling trees is probably not a bad idea as well. Filling freezers is not really a consideration when coming up with a management plan nor should it be... the best thing that can happen in high snowfall areas is to keep the carrying capacity of the deer to a level that allows them to make it through those winters... nature is just doing its part to take care of that pretty much on its own.1 point

I put a 20 ga. rifled barrel on my H&R 2yrs ago & the thing is dead on at 100 yds.with 1&1/4 groups. (Fyi) I found that Hornady Sst shoot the best with with Fusion coming in a close 2nd. The gun is enjoyable to shoot & hunt with. I use it hunting on damp/wet days & the ML. on nice days during shot gun season. Have fun with it.1 point

Just a suggestion from someone who has booked hunts off forum offers...... List your full contact info; address, company name, license number, web site (if you have one). I would NEVER book a hunt with someone who doesn't list a real address for their business, and po boxes don't cut it. (on many forums thats a hard and fast rule or you get deleted) Method of take; baiting, bow, gun, spear, knife, night spot lighting, daytime, chinese throwing stars......give an idea on how a typical hunter goes about your hunt. I see you posted this on a Michigan forum also today.....we're just a bunch of yankees and you're selling an out of the ordinary species for most; so how about some details of how this unfolds as a hunt. Put up some pics of what is RECENT average, every outfitter wants to show off the "big one" they shot 10 years ago, but that really doesn't put out what is realistic. Post some prices and what that includes and doesn't; like cost of an out of state license for a hunter, lodging(even if that is a nearby hotel). If you can't list a price in public, whats the difference if I call you and get one? Either way I'm looking to compare for the average in the industry for the same hunt one way or the other......so sell yourself a little on what I'm getting for the $$$. Just my thoughts.1 point

Take a good look at body mass. Seen some skinny deer past years with ribs showing, surviving. I start to worry at the point. when I start viewing ribs through their hide. March is a tough time historically speaking here. Deer will pull down very low to the bone, before they starve. If you're finding dead deer, that the ribs aren't showing on, then that deer died of other causes. I like the idea of an offset feeding program, if it wasn't illegal in NY.. Then I read articles where actual damage can be done to the herd if sideline feeding methods are used. Kind of turns the need to feed off. Pros and cons to every situation, I guess. A lot of the midwest states offset corn to the deers diet still to date. Corn is carbs, that's what they need right now, the most. Grass hay is also rich in carbs. Heck they don't even worry much about CWD. Humm, maybe NY. pushes issues with wildlife to far to the extreme. Live Deer Cam _ Crush with Lee & Tiffany.htm1 point

Your wrong, they live on my land, eat my vegetation, drink from my swamps, eat MY shrubs, eat MY lawn, sleep on my property, crap on my property, die on my property from natural causes and massive blood loss, have sex and reproduce on my property, So Yea they are my freakin deer.1 point
