a bittersweet day, last night I got word that one of the true patriarchs of the turkey hunting world had passed away Mr. Lovett Williams. his writings and recordings of turkey sounds and hunting information has no doubt helped many turkey hunters become successful in their endeavors of harvesting one of the most prized trophy's in the spring woods. as I sat against my tree this morning remembering back to when I had first heard of mr. Williams and the first time I heard his recordings of wild turkey calls I realized that the turkey hunting world has lost a wealth of knowledge BUT mr. Williams was a generous man while with us and he shared alot of that knowledge with all of us. He will be missed but will not be forgotten! I slipped into my spot this morning and set up on my favorite field edge tree, thankfully the deluge of rain had stopped. The first crow called out at 5:55am, GOBBBBLLLLEEE close about 70 yards out in a hemlock. I let him gobble a couple more times and then gave him a few soft cluck and tree yelps on the bomber. He responded with a thundering gobble right at me and pitched out and landed 50 yards from me. gobbled once and strutted right through the open woods to 25 yards before I putted to make him break strut and my hunt was over. 19lbs. 1 1/8" spurs, 10 1/2" beard. that burrville bomber from Tim Fralick is absolutely DEADLY on gobblers!8 points

heard nothing off of roost this AM. 6:00 heard a gobble behind me, starting calling and he hammered back. gave it a few minutes and then yelped again and he cut me off double gobbling his head off. Came in at full strut 5 minutes later he was in my lap with two hens and now in the back of my truck. Only bird I heard all morning.6 points

Shock gobbled birds at 9:15. 3 longbirds came running at first 3 note yelp. They hung up at 80 yards and boogied. Hung out for awhile and a couple of purrs brought them back. Shot a nice 2 year old. Other two kicked the crud out of him while he was down Two more guys and we could have tripled.2 points

I have't camped at the Quaker Area in several years. But, make sure to check out the bear caves and Thunder Rocks with the family. The park headquarters used to have a small but interesting museum. Trail #3 at the south end of the park near Science Lake is an interesting loop to hike with the family and could take a couple of hours. Trout fishing can be fair at sometimes but probably not too good in July. There should be fishing and swimming on Quaker Lake near your campground. It used to be fun to spotlight deer at night but there were a lot more deer years ago than what's there now. I haven't visited the casino near Salamanca but that may be interesting. Ellicotville to the north often has events going on too.2 points

If you go the burning route, I'd at least sink a few arrows in it before sending it up in smoke. Make it exciting....., dowse that sucker in gasoline, and light it up with a flaming arrow "Duke Boys" style,lol2 points

If you save your wing bones from this spring I'll make you a free wingbone call if you send me four sets of bones (that's both wings from two birds). If you only get one bird send both wings and I'll give you a discounted price on a call. I would especially like to get some jake bones. These will be plain field grade three bone calls, no thread wrapping, carving, or wood burning. I will do a discount on the fancier calls instead of a free call if that is what you would prefer.1 point

Not fooling .... He has the target set across a ditch before it slopes up so the arrows are going in like they would a target . I think the 470 grain skinny arrows have a lot to do with it .1 point

Had I mentioned this before and caught your response above, I would have driven the owl to your doorstep. Our son graduated from SUNY Potsdam in 2012. Too late. LOL1 point

Bayliners certainly are not on top of the list of manufacturers however there are a ton of them on the water. I had a 24 foot bayliner that served me well for fishing on the big O many many years and the guy I sold it too still has it in a slip every year. Its 20 years old now. I by no means am a gentile boat owner either. I fished a lot of tournaments out of it for years in some real bad weather. A few times being out on the lake when a storm rolled in and up to 10 footers. Basically I pounded the living snot out of that boat and it never sank. Close but still floats lol. If you are a part time boater and find a solid bayliner I wouldnt be scared to purchase one again. If you plan on being on the water 24/7 a more quality comfortable boat would be a better choice. I dont care what brand you own your gonna have an open wallet policy anyhow. Im on my 4th boat now and its the smallest and most simple fishing boat I have owned. 17 foot bass boat all aluminum Merc outboard no stringers to rot, no transoms to rot etc and there is always always something that still need upgrading or replacing. Batteries, tuneups, screwed up graph, rod holder over the side, trailer tires, bunk carpets worn out, bilge pump clogged or fried during a heavy rainstorm, it just never ends no matter what size boat or brand, some just are a couple more dollars to maintain than others.1 point

john, if you find a boat that really interests you and if everything was checked out and came back good you would buy it the best thing to do is have it inspected. I would recommend that you have a marine survey done on it. for a smaller boat you are probably looking at around 500 or a little under. they go over the boat from bow to stern. they do moisture readings on all accessable areas, floors, stringers, transom, gunnels etc.they also do a general electrical wiring inspection. they also do the standard USCG safety inspection of wiring safety, onboard fire supression systems, blowers etc. you should receive a complete survey report that will list any issues to be adressed. Some marine insurance companies require a survey and even some banks require them with a boat loan. any of your local marina's should be able to give you a name and number of a local surveyor. I have a few contacts for surveyors if you need them. I would also recommend having a marine mechanic do a check on the engine, outdrive etc. make sure its a tech that is familiar with the brand power units you have. some of the things to make sure are done are, compression tests on all cylinders, check oils for moistures, universal joints, bellows, shift boots, skeg and prop inpection for damage etc. whatever you decide, do not make a final decision with out a sea trial. after the sea trial check the oil to make sure its not milky, also check the oil fill cap on the valve cover as thats another spot the moisture will show up. good luck, if you need any help let me know.1 point

I said it earlier. Let me rephrase it. You can't back down from a major battle and expect to win the war. People around the country are watching what happens here, and in CT. We are the front line with regard to 'gun control'. The support is generally outstanding, IMO. Quite honestly jumping ship is something I've given serious consideration. Granted it has more to do with the business climate and the general economic decline of the state, but second amendment rights is a big part of why I'm sticking around for a while. There is an opportunity here to stand up and be heard, loudly and clearly, that the constitution is the law. I can't back away from that right now because I feel there's just too much at stake. As much as it hurts me financially, I'm not going to run from this fight right now.1 point

Been to park a couple times. Not my favorite. If you want a campfire, bring your own wood that has been kiln dried or purchase nearby. Swimming at Quaker and Red house lakes are nice. Prepare for crowds. By all means bring as much food as is practical, otherwise prepare for a drive for shopping in Salamanca. Bring electric fans to cool off the hot box of a cabin. Bring LOTS of ice for your coolers .Showers are available but not that great and inconvenient to get to. The place is just a hassle. Golf not cheap. Elkdale country club is good, but call ahead to see if course tee times are available. Holiday valley very pricey for golf. All in all, I'd rather have a stick in my eye than endure a week at A.S.P. If you can cancel, please do so and try to get a nice cabin at Letchworth State park. They have beautiful pools to swim in, great hiking, the sites are great. Better off getting a more expensive cabin and be comfortable...Keeps peace within the family.Good luck.1 point

You might check out the golf course at the Holiday Valley Ski Area in Ellicottville, I believe it's open to the public. I don't golf anymore so don't have any additional information.1 point

This subject demonstrates exactly why, we sportsman/ gunowners don't stand a chance against the anti gun crowd...we cannot agree on anything..Even a compromise within our own sport...Many of us didn't want xbows in archery at all..State comes up with a plan that is middle of the road (albeit not well thought out in the details)and the pro xbow guys are p%%&& and moaning. I do not see too many of the anti guys complaining... The pro argument is as full of holes as the anti..1 point

Only 1 way to settle this: Meet at an agreed-upon location and fight each other. One guy gets a compound and the other guy gets a crossbow.1 point

Those will work just fine. I've never used anything but the cheap collapsible foam Featherflex and Deltas. They fool plenty of gobblers.1 point
