Here's my daughters 2013 xbow buck, she has been helping me on and off for the last month or so, she tucked one eye, (I did the 1st one to show her) built up the nose, and did a good amount of the airbrushing. Happy Dad!9 points

My wife gets it. She just doesn't think its for her. But she does support my passions in whatever I do...including hunting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk4 points

Depends on what you want. Single shot, revolver, semi? How far you plan to shoot? In a revolver, I would go with a 44 mag, which you could shoot 44 special out of, or load the .44 mag down a little if you are concerned about recoil. I used to use 200 gr bullets which recoiled a little less and still did a fantastic job on whitetails. Or a .45 Long Colt. Very manageable recoil and does a great job. Not a big fan of a .357 for deer. In a single shot like a T/C, the choices are many, 308,7-08, 35 rem, among many. I used to hunt exclusively with handguns years ago.3 points

Here is a novel idea. If you don't own it stay off it. Another novel idea; find out who owns the land, ask permission and offer to pay half the taxes! I post my land but it sure as hell isn't doing me any favors to incur the cost, time, and aggravation. Why should I, or any other landowner feel compelled to post their land as a "favor" for strangers who want to bumble about aimlessly in the woods. I just don't get what's so hard about this. It seems part of the same handout mentality. You got it and I don't, I want it and I'll take it if you won't give it to me and too bad if you don't like it...after all it's your fault because you've got it and I don't. Oh yeh...and I want it for free!3 points

Definitely not. My wife was belly crawling next to me in Wyoming when I shot my first antelope. And there always some sort of wild game for dinner. Funny though.2 points

My wife buys me hunting gear. Winchester 1300 and Winny ML years back, NWTF membership, snow shoes, and the list goes on. She doesn't hunt but loves the turkey and venison I bring home. Shes gets it, the woods are my happy place and I'm outta her hair.2 points

My buddy has the same gun. Think I'll ask to shoot it a bit. See how I like it and go from there. Leaning towards this one if i like it. $1 a shot isn't much more than shooting .22 rimfire these days2 points

It's more about the fit of the gun than the caliber when it comes to 'felt' recoil in a handgun.2 points

10 rnd mag is perfectly legal. You're only allowed 6 squirrels, so you if you load the magazine with 7 rnds and use one as a sighter you're good to go.2 points
-
It some areas it could be done by making a list of what rifle rounds are legal and not legalizing high powered rounds. Say .357 Mag, .44 Mag, 454 Casull, etc. The list could be made up by figuring anything similar to the velocity of a shotgun slug or muzzle loader should be legal. If anything, it might sell a few more rifles in NY state. But maybe NY doesn't want that.2 points

Fortunately, The Mermaid is an old farm girl and grew up with the knowledge that meat comes from real live animals. Her dad raised and slaughtered his own cows, pigs and chickens, and he was an avid hunter besides. She prefers venison over beef. She is not interested in killing anything herself, but she enjoys eating the game and fish that I bring home.2 points

Ok. So. No cracks in the limbs. Just some screws and a rivet that popped, and a few scratches. Looks like the string is good. It's going to cost me 100-150. Much better than I expected. I'm praying he doesn't see anything else wrong with it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

My wife bought a 6' high platform stand with a hub blind for Christmas . I put the platform up over a month ago on the bank of a pond . Went to Geneseo today and installed the Hub Blind . Luckily I had my Thermacell with me . What a pain it was to open the blind up top side . I bough a blade for my weed trimmer and cut down some of the high weeds . They were about 5' high . Drove the ATV around a few times to knock down some of the weeds and then cut them also . I hope it turns out to be worth the effort .1 point

Wait...you guys have strategies? I just get in my tree/any tree and sit with a HUGE smile on my face that I am back in the woods!!! Maybe that's why I harvest so few deer!1 point

I married a city girl. It was tough at first. She didn’t like guns and couldn't understand that someone would need more than one. Then she didn't see why would someone would want to kill a cute animal. But after the many days I’d get back from hunting she would say "did you get one”, and when I would she would be happy for me and knew the effort I put in. Now 5 years later it’s just a routine. she knows hunting season's coming up. Brags to her family when I harvest something and loves cooking different venison recipes. Just stay passionate Borngeechee, hopefully she'll come around.1 point

Um how'd they make out ? I wish the Jets had a QB as good as Brady but the simple fact remains.....You smack Brady around a bit and he becomes very average.1 point

My son sent me these pics from my new food plot this year in 7S. The dates are wrong as he had alot of cameras to do and didnt have time to set dates / time. These were taken a week ago and my stand is located about 75 yds into the woods on a travel route.1 point

I havn't watched a hunting show in at least a year and that was the 1st in a long time . Too many commercials selling deer bait , etc .. You watched the kill and the guy has to explain what you just saw . Why ? I saw it ! And ..... of course the hunter continues to whisper after the deer is down . It's a rarity to see a guy shoot a doe on one of these shows . The hunter is tracking the deer he shot and all of a sudden he screams "there he is" but the camera man is on the other side of the deer taping as the hunter makes the find . Give me a break !1 point

So I am against baiting, ESPECIALLY using store bought, chem lab enhanced products. Last year I found a pile of something that turned in to white mold on a property I lease and I looked around and sure enough there was a trial cam pointed right at it. The whole area stunk and I had my only stand set up a few yards away. That aside, I do have to laugh at some of the arguments...especially when it comes to food plots / trees and using nature's bait for you. For example. Why is it that the man who has access to hunt near an apple tree and shoots a deer eating the apples will make it seem like he is a more skilled and righteous hunter than the person who doesn't have an apple tree and illegally dropped apples? That makes you a legal hunter, and in my opinion more ethical one. But don't kid yourself and say that you are a more skilled or righteous hunter. You both shot deer that were baited to the apples. One was just fortunate enough to have the tree on their property. This is coming from one of those hunters who is lucky enough to hunt a farm.1 point

Actually, if you GOT it registered prior to the deadline which has passed. Can't buy a new one, or register the one you forgot about at this point.1 point

Seeing stuff like this is why I never draw my bow anymore without an arrow knoked, at least your not Injured! Might be better to get a whole new bow after you figure in the expenses and time to get the parts.1 point

I beleive the contact info is for those that post property that isn't theirs. I was on public land a few years ago and came across posted signs. After having a DEC officer come out and check it. It turns out it was put up by another hunter trying to keep other hunters away from "his" hunting area.1 point

From what I understand if name and contact info are not present you can only be asked to leave not be charged.....but could be incorrect.1 point

i don't see how it's "no different". a food plot is the same as hunting some farm, a creek bottom or a bedding area. One is natural and alive, the other is not.1 point

This is my first time seeing this program, and I must applaud this group/effort. As a medically retired veteran, I can say that things like hunting/fishing are completely overlooked by the various "veteran friendly" groups out there. It is REALLY nice to see something like this. I am getting a new bass boat next spring, and would very much like to be a part of this if I could. My disability does not prevent me from hunting or fishing, and I would really love to help those in a different situation than mine. I hunt private land (not owned by me), so I can't help there, but I would love to offer the use of my boat and/or myself for this project. My current boat is not registered for the year, or I would offer that as well. Please let me know how I can be of assistance with this. Joshua1 point

That statement could be tested with all the :Throw and Grow: crap. 10-20ft circle around the stand is kinda borderline i would say. But do get your point!1 point

I've hunted over bait. It's really not that big of a deal. It's been around for as long as modern hunting has, and even before that. Alot of that has to do with traditional POVs on hunting, just like running dogs for deer (done that, too). Just because it is different than what you grew up with that helped shape your moral compass doesn't mean it is "wrong." It's just different.1 point

Is it true about Texas, everything is bigger and better in Texas ? How about the ladies ?1 point

Thanks, glad I can entertain! He was not at full charge, but coming quickly. The terrain was pitched downhill and I think that's what kept him at a slower pace. The images of the hind legs moving up and down at the "hips" will never be erased from my memory. I would also consider myself more lucky than "skilled." I shot less than 10 shells in my life before that happened (I'm a very new hunter). By the time picked up the old Remington and had him in my scope, it's head took up the entire sight. Thankfully, I hit him in the throat and didnt ruin the skull, which i had bleached (picking it up when the rug is done). It still seems surreal when I think about it.1 point

Last year, while whitetail hunting the southern zone I was on a log eating lunch and heard something moving quickly behind me - I turned around and it was a black blear beelining at me. I dropped my lunch, quickly picked the rifle up off of my lap and luckily, hit it in the throat and dropped it instantly. It was 25 footsteps from me when I got it. It took me four hours to drag it to an area where I had reception to call for backup; another hour with two additional guys to get it too a truck. As said above - it gets caught on everything, small stones, brush, rock walls, etc. Dragging 295lbs of dead weight is not what I had planned for. My friends family has had this camp for 30 years and has never seen a bear. You truly dont know what you can enounter in the woods. Thankfully I had my 30-06 and luck on my side that day. My rug should be done any week now!1 point

haha ABSOLUTELY TRUE! Its amazing how the mind can play tricks on you! The heavy brush surrounding the trail you decided to take somehow turns into the perfect bear ambush! Its hard not to turn shadows into drooling blood thirsty beasts lol I love getting into the woods while its still pitch black out just to get situated before daylight starts creeping through the canopy. Its amazing how light can change the forest as the day goes on. While I love my rabid imagination the sight of bear scat is a reminder to respect this wonderful animal in its natural habitat. I have posted tree stands above massive piles of bear scat in Sterling with absolutely no sight of bear all day. They are extremely elusive to encounter in their natural habitat. And I cant even imagine what bagging a massive black bear with a bow would feel like. I am extremely exited to respectively hunt this wonderful animal in the fine state of NY.1 point

Really? Do you really think there will be that many guys out there? Maybe it depends on where you live, but here in Ontario County, I will guarantee that I will never see a bear hunter even on state land. Oh, maybe the first year or two until they realize how totally unrealistic it is to go out hunting specifically for bears only. I imagine that most places will see more pressure from small game hunters than bear hunters......unless guys start sneaking bait out there and setting up illegal operations .... lol.1 point

I had a Sportsman 335, and it was great for the things you are talking about. It didnt go super fast, but it was a full size frame, never got stuck in the swamps, and hauled just as well as my buddys Sportsman 400. Its an overlooked older model that is right up the alley you are talking about. You can find them well under 2k in perfect shape. That being said, my next one will be a Honda Foreman, as I dont want the IRS or Automatic trans1 point
