  1. Had this coyote come by me this morning. He was headed in the opposite direction, so I lip squeaked to see if he would come back. Within seconds, I saw him bounding back! He kept stopping to look and listen, then would come a few yards closer. He was on a trail coming at me head on and I was concerned that he would bust me, so I took him through the chest. He was 25 yards away. He went about 8 yards and collapsed! First blood with the crossbow! The bolt went through him and you can see the end of it sticking out his hind quarter.

  2. I've been hunting the Iroquois Wildlife Refuge for a couple bow seasons now, and finally put it together. In my tree all morning, only seen 1 doe run by, and I finally see a deer moving slowly about 35 yds away. Where I am that's about as far as I can see in any direction. It slowly feeds it's way towards me, and at 20 I can see its a buck. It lifts it's head up and stares in my direction for a good 30 seconds, then starts walking right at me. By now I have my bow in hand, but haven't had a chance to draw. He comes in to 15 yds, watching me, and doing the head bob, and I think he busted me. Can see he's an 8-point. He doesn't spook though, just turns and walks behind a big ash tree, and turns back straight at me again to watch from next to it. After a 60 second staring contest, him probably wondering just how that fat guy got way up that tree, he slowly walks past another big ash, and I finally can draw. He comes out from the tree broadside, 15 yds looking ahead of himself, away from me, and that's where he got a rocket through the lungs. Ran a wobbly 30 yds, went out of sight, and heard the big crash a few seconds later! It's a pretty unique place to hunt, but I definitely will be back now!

  3. Killed this deer in PA, not NY with a crossbow earlier this week. I switched over to crossbow here 10 years ago when they became legal. If this is NY only, I'll take the post down.

  4. a buddy asked if I could make some killings arrows for a buddy of him. He had been helping him get ready for the winter and would not take any money for the help. As we get older ( 73 me), it sure does help to have some younger guy or family that helps us seniors out. So I got out my arrow making outfit and made him a doz Easton 400 carbon hunter arrows, with 2 inch BH vanes. Well I got a message back that he had had taken in Iowa a 140+ buck with the arrows I made up for him. Says they sure were killers, as the buck only went 40 yards after being hit with the arrow...

  6. While pulling in the lane this morning, a nice buck was chasing a doe around my clover plot. I watched them for what seemed like 2 min. They were only 50 yards from me! Actually felt bad for the doe! Every time she looked at my car it was like she was thinking, "Can ya help me out here?" LOL I'm hunting in a stand 75 yards from where this all happened. Its right next to a bedding area. Thought it was going to be an exciting morning, but I haven't heard or seen a deer yet! Did see a coyote earlier. Lip squeeked it in. Its now piled up 30 yards away!! Sent from my VS980 4G

  7. Ha-ha .... Normally I would be bouncing off the keyboard over these outrageous confessions of Biz-R-OWorld, but I am getting beaten own and buried by these self absorbed and self centered attitudes. I think his I-don't-give-a-crap attitude is way more prevalent than we could ever imagine. As disgusting as it may be, he is not alone when it comes to irresponsibility in a participatory government. Look at the voting percentages, particularly these non presidential elections. There is no excuse, but there is no denying that his attitude is much more widespread than we would like to think. And then we sit back and wonder where our rights have gone. It's pretty obvious now isn't it?

  10. Took this buck with my Carbon Express Crossbow Monday morning 3 November. It is my first cross bow deer. I initially resisted the move to a cross bow but felt I was an interesting piece of weaponry and liked what I heard about its reputation for clean kills. I hunted two very enjoyable days in the ADK's last week but Monday was my first day hunting in the Southern zone this year near our present home. Got my butt into the woods early in morning in spite of 15- 20 degree F chill factors, NW wind 12 -15. Climbed into my tree stand at 0630. Didn't see a thing, 1000 hours came and went with no sign of deer and I started thinking about coming out of the tree stand and heading down to the house to dig some potatoes for supper. But told myself " the deer could be moving this morning because it is cold, you lazy comfort loving son of gun, you are going to stay in this tree at least another hour!" At about 1030 I saw a medium sized doe moving coming toward the stand. She looks back over her shoulder. Suddenly a buck emerges! He is on her trail! He proceeds closer to the stand but is moving quickly. At 20 yards I made a "verbal buck grunt". He stops. I fire an arrow into his rib cage and hear a "thwack". The buck runs to the west and I see him slow down as he goes out of view. I wait 10 minutes and get out of my tree stand. I locate the arrow that I fired and determine it has passed completely through the animal. I believe the arrow took out both lungs. I walk to where I saw him last and find him there only about 35-40 yards from the shot. I said a prayer of thanks for the animal and the way it all went down so quickly for the deer.

  13. I went up to Roxbury to hunt my cousin's camp and was told that he had a few Porcupines that kept eating all of his wooden tree stands and said to take one out if I saw him coming through. While sitting in one of his wooden stands the first day, a huge one come in right for me. I got him with my bow at 30 yards and decided to Euro the skull. I thought i'd share because it looks pretty cool. very similar to a Beaver.

  16. I think that tradition does frame what we think of as fair chase. If we look at how deer and other game are hunted in other states, that differ from our tradition, we likely have different views. Some may view the running of deer or bear with dogs as not fair chase but then turn around and enjoy a great afternoon running snowshoes with a few hounds. Is it really different because of the species? I find myself conflicted on the response.

  17. Looking at these so called "rubs" reminds me of a time long ago, I was hunting at 3 rivers up in Phoenix and I came across a city boy who was deer hunting and we had a couple inches of show on the ground and he called me over to show me some "huge" buck tracks he was following and asked if I could help him track it,,,,,I didn't have the heart to tell them they were rabbit tracks in the snow,,,,,, Not one of these trees is a deer "rub"

I still don't understand it... but I can respect your guts to not hide from it. But based on the fact that you didn't vote and fight to help your fellow gun owners... I wouldn't want to be trapped in a fox hole with you... can't trust a man that won't stand with his fellow gun owners.

  22. No you aren't. You are the type that likes to make management opinions based on what YOU see as right not what the needs of the species are. Did you know the Dec is open to discussion on alternate bear management options in NY to stop the growth of bear populations in areas of the state where they do not want more bear?

  23. Bear hunting in Maine is about wildlife population management and tradition. It's not reasonable to compare Bear to deer or turkey but your type always does. Did you know that Bear populations in Maine continue to grow under its current management system? I'm especially happy that Hsus lost this battle in Maine.

  24. When a state has a bear population that is at capacity, and the dense woods, that expand for millions of acres, demand these practices to control the population of bears, it is not about "fair chase", it's about sound wildlife management. If you don't like snares, baiting and hunting with hounds, you don't do it. But telling others what should be allowed by law is an arrogant attitude. Maybe we need to enforce fair chase for rats in NYC as well. No more poisons or baited traps. We can work much harder to control the rat population that way.

  25. I feel no sympathy for you and your problems. Yes I agree that if someone is illegally removing your signs and trespassing then do what you have to to bust them and press charges so the community knows you mean business. But when you call them your deer and people have no right to do a legal activity, that is total BS. If you don't want people looking on to your property than do something about it, but if it is open and I see a deer, you bet your tail I am going to stop and take a look at it. As long as I can legally park on the state owned shoulder and not disrupt the flow of traffic, I will light the deer or gawk in broad daylight. Telling someone that they can not do a legal activity because you don't agree with it doesn't make any sense to me. But if you are into that whole dictator thing I am sure Gov. Cuomo can find a nice job for you. Also if you want to solve the problem with grains I would say go for it, while you are sitting in a cell, I would be back in the same spot admiring the nice deer you will never be able to harvest =p

  26. First archery deer / buck. Been hunting for about 17 years and had a few opportunities but could never connect. I started hunting a new property last year which is almost 70 acres mostly wooded with one big swamp and one small swamp. Saturday I counted 5 different bucks, something I never encountered. First two bucks were a nice basket six and a beautiful ten behind him. They were about to come into a shooting lane but winded me and took off. One hour later another six snuck up on me while I was watching some turkeys and I was able to stand up and take a shot but misjudged the distance and it went under him. Went home for lunch by 12 and came back in by 130. Nothing in site all afternoon then out of nowhere off to my left walking along the swamp came a spike with a six behind him and literally came within 7 yards. They came in so fast and so close that I wasnt even going to attempt a shot because I figured they would see or smell me immediately. The spike spotted me and ran out in front but the six got distracted for a second by the spike and gave me a chance to draw. Unfortunately as soon as I released the deer jumped forward and my shot went further back than I would have liked. Arrow didnt pass through and I watched him running with it for about 50 yards behind the rib cage. Of course he ran into the swamp and I couldnt hear him anymore. I let an hour and a half go by then got down and started looking for blood and of course could not find any. I went to the last spot I saw him and found my arrow with some blood and what looked like intestines. We briefly searched the swamp but it is near impossible at night so we decided to pull out and head back first thing in the morning. Long story short he made it through the swamp and found him on the other side with a gut/liver shot. First archery deer/buck. No monster but it felt great. Lots of big bucks under my belt with a gun but this one feels more accomplished.

Deer trotted 30 yds. looked around, laid down and that was all-no tracking needed, never had that happen before.Decent body on him but I was too tired to weigh him when I got home.

  28. I can't believe anyone would believe there is no voter fraud going on. Seems to me the Democrats protest too much, when it seems to benefit them the most. I don't put it past them to cheat, lie and steal, any way they can, to stay in power and ultimately ruin this country. Voter Fraud and Voter I.D. By Thomas Sowell · Nov. 4, 2014 "One of the biggest voter frauds may be the idea promoted by Attorney General Eric Holder and others that there is no voter fraud, that laws requiring voters to have a photo identification are just attempts to suppress black voting. Reporter John Fund has written three books on voter fraud and a recent survey by Old Dominion University indicates that there are more than a million registered voters who are not citizens, and who therefore are not legally entitled to vote. The most devastating account of voter fraud may be in the book “Injustice” by J. Christian Adams. He was a Justice Department attorney, who detailed with inside knowledge the voter frauds known to the Justice Department, and ignored by Attorney General Holder and Company. One of these frauds involved sending out absentee ballots to people who had never asked for them. Then a political operator would show up – uninvited – the day the ballots arrived and “help” the voter to fill them out. Sometimes the intruders simply took the ballots, filled them out and forged the signatures of the voters. These were illegal votes for Democrats, which may well be why Eric Holder sees no evil, hears no evil and speaks no evil. As for race-based “voter suppression,” amid all the political hysteria, how many hard facts have you heard? Probably none that supports that claim. Widely available free photo identification cards mean that poverty is no barrier to voting. Since blacks and whites both have to show photo I.D. for everything from cashing checks to getting on a plane, why has requiring a photo I.D. for voting caused such shrill outcries? Unfortunately, this is part of the cynical politics of promoting as much racial polarization and paranoia as possible, in hopes of getting more black voters to turn out to vote for the Democrats. Nothing is too gross when promoting racial hysteria in an election year. Veteran Democrat Congressman Charlie Rangel from Harlem declared that Republicans “don’t disagree – they hate!” According to Rangel, “Some of them believe that slavery isn’t over and that they won the Civil War!” Republicans did win the Civil War. That’s why there is no more slavery. It was a Republican president who issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a Republican-controlled Congress that voted for the 13th Amendment, outlawing slavery. In the 1960s, a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. If we are going to talk about history, let’s at least get the facts right. Only an utter ignorance of history, in this era of dumbed-down education, could allow demagogues like Rangel to get away with the absurdities that abound in election year politics. Images of lynching and Jim Crow laws that made blacks sit in the back of buses are used against Republicans, even though the “solid South” was solidly controlled by Democrats during that era. Bull Connor, who turned police dogs and fire hoses on civil rights demonstrators, was a Democrat. So were other Southern segregationists. In those days, you could go hundreds of miles through the Jim Crow South without seeing a single Republican official. That is why political observers called it “the solid South.” Perhaps the biggest voter fraud of all is the fraud against black voters, by telling them bogey man stories, in order to try to get them to come out on election day to vote for Democrats. The most cynical of these bogey man ploys is Attorney General Holder’s threats of legal action against schools that discipline a “disproportionate” number of black boys. Unless you believe that black boys cannot possibly be misbehaving more often than Asian American girls, what does this political numbers game accomplish? It creates another racial grievance, allowing Democrats like Holder to pose as rescuers of blacks from racist dangers. The real danger is allowing disruptive students in ghetto schools to destroy the education of other black students – in a world where education is the only hope that most ghetto youngsters have for a better life. Sacrificing these young people’s futures, in hopes of gaining some additional black votes today, is as cynical and fraudulent as it gets." Favor Amnesty? Forget Freedom! http://dailysignal.com/2014/10/29/latest-reason-oppose-amnesty-voter-fraud-2/ http://patriotpost.us/posts/30138 Indeed, Obama declared Wednesday, "Before the end of the year we're gonna, uh, uh, take whatever lawful actions that I can take that I believe will improve the functioning of our immigration system. ... Whatever executive actions that I take can be replaced and supplanted by action by Congress. You send me a bill that I can sign and those executive actions go away." In other words, if Congress won't do what he tells them to do, then he will act unilaterally with executive orders. If Congress doesn't like it, all they have to do to make those executive orders go away is just do what he tells them to do. Columnist David Harsanyi explains the serious consequences of this plan: “Obama has basically admitted again that he believes the president -- if he’s passionate enough about a certain issue -- is free to craft legislation. And by consistently equating his forthcoming executive action with bills passed by Congress, Obama acknowledges the purpose of his unilateral moves is to enact new policies or pressure Republicans into giving him what he wants. Which is a big problem if you care about the Constitution.” There has been enough proof documenting voter fraud to see it as a real attack on the Constitutional right to vote in America. If illegals are granted amnesty, they will vote for Democrats by the millions, and you will never be able to get them out of power in this country again. That my friends, will be the end of the Free America operating under rule of law and the Constitution, that we used to love.

  32. You want suburbia throughout the rest of the state? On LI you mostly have bowhunting only, and very little access for hunters along with NO natural predators. That is the ONLY reason the bucks get big there. Do you think hunters really want to see the same scenario throughout the rest of the state? I don't think so.

  33. OK, I wouldn't listen too much to what this guy has to say. He is all over the internet trying to drum up business. He thinks that you will be impressed that he gets all of these deer in daily. I would bet it is nowhere near the actual amount. You got in 40 deer in one day, 15 p&y bucks, and you have time to post on the internet about it? It's marketing, nothing more.
    1 point
  34. So 35 of the 40 deer he butchered were bucks, and he thinks the hunters have done a great job of controlling the deer population on LI?? How many does were passed while these guys were waiting for their trophy bucks (15 of which were P&Y. LOL)? I bet that most of these guys won't even go out anymore, now that they got their trophies. I realize that land access is an issue on LI, but I still say that hunters, especially since most of the hunting is bow only, put very LITTLE hurt on the deer population on LI.

  35. I disagree that hunting as recreation can not be separated from its function as a population control tool. In opposition to Question 1, Maine DIW justifies uses of bait, hounds, and foot snares to control bear populations. The DIW was reconciling the role these three methods have in boosting bear harvest and therefore being important in population management. That is not the same as your assertion that the primary use of hunters IS population management. Hunting benefits the conservation of all wildlife, not just game and reaches beyond nuisance wildlife or population control. In essence you are stating that controlling over-population is the most important function of the wildlife department within the DEC. That may be the perspective of hunters but it is not true and that idea would not appeal to the public majority. The public at large would, however, be receptive to the broader benefits derived from hunting and that is where we MUST begin to focus. Restated to be clear that I am not going back on myself: Population control was relevant to Question 1 and the initiative was indeed reconciled with population control. However the population control card is not relevant to every controversy surrounding hunting and does not resonate with everyone.

Growing up as a kid we always had small brookies, browns and rainbows in the 10-13" range. gutted and took the heads off. stood them up (like McDonalds French fries) in empty and cleaned half gallon milk jugs. The old paper cardboard type. filled with water and froze. Never any freezer burn.
