  1. While the Doe I took this year was nothing to brag about she provided useful input on some new equipment. Got to use my new Howa Superlite Rifle Made a kill with factory ammo "Hornady Precision Hunter 143gr EDL" for the first time in many years and the first for me with the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge. The new Deer hoist worked like a charm Used an outdoor Edge replaceable blade knife for the first time on the skinning and it worked great Last but not least is the new LEM Mighty Bite meat grinder, picked it up last year on sale and it works very well replacing the Kitchen Aid that was good but a little slow. 5. It doesn’t seem to matter what socks I wear in my Mickey Mouse boots. My feet stay warm in them in below zero temps, even in light cotton socks. I usually go with a medium weight wool blend on colder days though.

  7. When it comes to warm socks I have found as long as they are made of mostly wool my feet will stay warm in good boots. About 10 years ago I found a closeout on Browning Wool socks and I bought a pile of them for a song, they are some of the best I have ever worn. Still wearing them today. Al

  8. 100% venison. If I want beef, I'll have a beef burger. In 30 years, I've never had a issue with burgers crumbling or falling apart.

  9. Just venison for the meat. I'll typically add egg and breadcrumbs to help bind the meat together so it does not fall apart while grilling.

  11. A couple pounds of beef fat to every twelve pounds of venison. That works perfect for me.

  12. I did it for the first time when they made that special holiday season but I find it very hard to actually get out this late in the season with everything going on for the holidays and have kids.

  14. I believe I have threads posted on almost all of the items mentioned along with photos, I do not remember ever posting anything about the LEM Mighty Bite but like I said it does work great and has metal gears so it should last. As for the Deer I have never taken a photo of any Does I have killed, I just don't. Al

  16. What this does is just make it ever more harder to get your ammo and especially ammo that is not popular and a big seller. I have protected myself from this crap, it is the up and coming folks that are just getting into hunting that this affects especially hard. Try to find ammo for grandpa's 257 Roberts he left you. Hard to find and when you do the prices are crazy, has to be discouraging. Al

  18. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from a young man in his early 30's inquiring about our hunting club the other day!! This guy says he-and his younger brother- have been hunting their entire lives and would like to join a club. Yes, they are rare, indeed, but a few young people are still into it!!

  19. A couple of things, first off is the theme of the rifle which is light weight and fast handling. I want to match the scope to the rifle's theme and keep the total package as light as possible within reason. For the way I will be using this rifle the 1X5 Leupold fits the bill perfectly as the outfit weighs 5.83 lbs on my scale. Second, I am for the most part a woods hunter, I do not believe I have killed a Deer much over 100 yds in the last 40 years or so and the longest shot I ever made on a deer was about 250 yds. That 1X5 Leupold will handle any of those type shots easily including the 250 yarder. Also the field of view is huge and what I want in a woods rifle to get on target in close quarters fast. I will most likely have the scope set on 2X power when hunting. Many of my Deer rifles have 2.5 and 1X4 scopes, my slug gun has a 3X Leupold mounted on it and has accounted for probably half the Deer I have ever taken. I just do not see the need for a big mambo high powered scope for Deer where I hunt. One last thing, there is a misconception that a high powered scope is required for longer range shooting, for best results for target and dedicated varmint hunting that is true. For Deer here in NY for the most part a hunter that knows his gun will get along perfectly fine with a scope with a lower range in power and make the longer shot if need be. That is my take, if someone wants to use a high powered scope as long as it suits them I have no problem with it, just not my cup of tea. Al
