  1. Not much of a Deer hunter these days and usually from the middle of the season on, but last night I decided to get out the first thing in the morning. Got bundled up and grabbed the Howa Superlight 6.5 Creedmoor and headed out. A frosty start to the day and as the daylight started coming on the woods began to come alive. Walked to one of my favorite Squirrel hunting spots and sat down on a stump. Squirrels and Blue Jays were in the Beech trees gathering mast, I could hear Turkeys talking. Was not sitting for five minutes and saw a Doe walking through the trees, I have a permit but I let her slide. Then a parade of Turkeys appeared started toward me and low and behold a Buck was walking along in front of them. Put the crosshairs behind the front shoulder and shot, he hunched up and took off running but I knew he would not go too far. I walked back home and got my Airedale pup Ruff and brought him to the spot the Buck was walking when I shot. There was no visible blood but I put the pup on the track and away we went, not 50 yards and there he was deader than a doornail, A good introduction to Deer tracking for young Ruff, I believe he will handle Deer tracking quite well. Good part he was not far from a logging road so I got my tractor and drove close enough for an easy drag and flopped him into the loader bucket and brought him home to dress out. One of my shortest Deer hunts ever. Al

  6. Last couple years my PA hunting buddy and I have hunted the Charles E. Baker State Forest during the MZ holiday hunt (Madison County, WMU 7M.) Tags are easy to get and it's 9,400 acres lol. Lots of different forest types and quite a few ag fields butting up to it. Also has 100 miles of horse trails throughout so you're not always pounding through the brush. Can also ride the forest roads and if you cut a fresh track (snow depending) you can make a plan and get on it. Most fun I've had deer hunting in a long time IMHO. PM me for more info if interested.

  7. In and up for my second short sit of the season. Drove out to Rochester for my dentist appointment on Friday, and spent the next two days with my 7 year old grandson doing up the Halloween thing. Lol Got back this morning and finished tucking in my bee hives, so now I can concentrate a little more on deer. Had a big doe about 30 yards away giving me the stare down on my way in. A lot of leaves fell since last week, and really opened up the woods. It’s overcast, windy, and chilly here in 7M. Congratulations to you guys that got deer already!

  8. Back tension has been a hot topic of archery shooting procedure for decades. I have archery magazines from the late sixties where Sam Fadala and others talked about back tension. But it was never explained as well as this video. Of course back then videos were not as easy to come by as they are today. But actually seeing someone go through the motions of creating proper back tension really is a good way of teaching, especially when it is done by an archery coach. This the first time I ever saw it related to muscle and joint longevity though. It all makes sense.

  10. Good go! NIce buck! I had last week off for NT ML season...strictly traditional cap and ball for me that week. It was so warm it was only worth going out a few mornings early on, but I made sure i was up there for the end of the week when the warm weather broke and the temps dropped very nicely. I was able to take a nice heavy bodied 3 ptr with my .54 Lyman. North woods, shots are close which is a great equalizer. I wont be out much over the next few weeks, I take the last week of the season off ...usually have snow by then and more deer move into the area...and fewer hunters.

  13. Hunted at Geneseo in the afternoon with a son and grandson . Saw 3 doe and 2 different fox while I was sitting in my stand . It was very windy and cold . My son called me at 5:30 and said he had hit a doe using his recurve bow and single bevel arrow but hit it back a ways and needed help tracking . It went quite a distance on the neighbor's property but finally found it .

  14. Years ago, I picked up a military style kaybar belt knife for $5 at a yard sale. That thing has the best steel of any of the knives that I own. Yes, I suppose by most people's standards, it is a bit big and clunky for field dressing deer, but I have not found that to be a problem. Once I put an edge on that thing, it stays shaving sharp for the whole season, even when I use it for hacking small limbs for shooting lanes.

  15. 40yards is pretty far and xbow very loud. I bet he ducked down and you shot over it. If its head was down deer can pivot and duck even faster..using its head/neck as a lever

  18. Over the years I have experimented with different calls. For the most part they don't work but I have had some success with a couple. The one that has had the most response is the can. One time I used it on a buck that was over a 100 yds. away and he came straight to the call. Another time while using a grunt call I had two bucks come down opposite ridges. They met at the bottom (to far away for a shot) and put on one hell of a show. After the fight was over they both walked away and I couldn't call them back but it was worth the price of admission. At the right time and place they will work. On a few other occasions using the grunt I have had them bolt like someone just kicked them. In your case if you can see them I would keep it very subtle. Just enough for them to hear it and don't over do it. These are the two I have had luck with. Good Luck & shoot straight!!

  19. Was out driving around and noticed a lot of deer on the move in the rainy weather. Was coming up my road and saw this, she stayed long enough to give me a great picture. I may have this one framed and put in the bunk house. On a side not we did a lot of driving yesterday to West Point and back. I just noticed an alarming amount of road kill. These animals are moving about so be careful.

  22. Well that didn't last long Federal appeals court upholds New York's ban on guns in sensitive places NEW YORK (AP) — A recent Supreme Court decision doesn’t mean New York can’t enforce laws banning firearms from “sensitive” places such as public transportation, hospitals and schools, a federal appeals court said Thursday, repeating findings it made a year ago. Last December, a three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit said New York could continue enforcing laws banning firearms in 20 categories of “sensitive” locations and could require handgun owners to be of “good moral character.” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement that the appeals court upheld the “common-sense measure” she signed into law two years ago. She said the law was “saving lives across New York” and was a factor in New York having one of the nation’s lowest firearm mortality Federal appeals court upholds New York's ban on guns in sensitive places
