    Man, I’ve been putting my little DEP permit at every DEP site I go to. I’ve gotta read the rules more carefully. The DEP is also doing forest management? That’s great! I thought their approach was to not touch it and leave it in a forever wild state. Is this new? Do you now if the cut locations and dates are posted?

    Yes, still required but still free. Some DEP areas are heavily patrolled by DEP police so definitely get one

    I think you’re probably right that midges have no preferences. But there may be metabolic differences between bucks and does (especially this time of year during rapid antler growth) that makes bucks more susceptible to dying of EHD. Most of the “dead near water” pictures that I’ve seen are of bucks. Perhaps it’s just that dead antlered deer are more striking and so those pictures are shared more often…

    The further north in NY you go the better it will be. Look for forests that have been actively managed (cut). If you can walk comfortably through the woods, the age class to probably too old. Find something younger and thicker. Join the Ruffed Grouse Society.

    Good contiguous habitat will mitigate these challenges (predators, disease). The problem arises when you have small fragmented parcels of adequate habitat and disease strikes or predators surge. You can lose the entire local population in such instances, as we’ve seen with grouse

    A good friend of mine had the aspirational (misguided?) dream to make a difference and decided to teach at a poor inner city high school. She lasted less than 5 years. Went back law school and is now making bank in DC. I’ve seen the system jade educators…
